I am looking to do this, hence why I landed here on this video! Really just as a side gig, and just trading some free nights in exchange for photos, and maybe videos (trying to figure out ways to travel more without spending half my income!). I was thinking of just reaching out to some local hotels and asking if I could come take photos, and then if they want to use them they can, free of charge, just as a way for me to build a portfolio. One hotel actually reposted one of my Instagram photos, so I'll probably start with them! BTW, great name! (I'm also Matt, haha)
I has an owner of a hotel ask me to shoot photography for him, and I am told videography is also a huge part of it. I have a $25 unstable tripod and no special lenses to make certain the light is modified...I'm a little nervous and put off the learning of it all week. It's in an hour. & this is my first paid photo shoot in my life.
Super helpful video! Starting to get into hotel photography and still struggling with approaching potential clients. Would you be able to share the message or messages you sent to that hotel that had just changed owner? Would be interesting to see the communication you used that got you on a call with the hotel. :D Thanks for great content!
Great video, very down to earth. Can you tell me about the equipment you're currently using for shoots? And if you have any recommendations for a first time buyer just starting? THANKS!
Thanks so much! I’ve primarily been shooting on a Canon R5 and the RF 24-70 lens. When it comes to just starting out, honestly any camera is a good camera. Any of the canon Rebel series or m50/m6 are great to start with. The most important thing is to understand how to properly expose your camera and getting lighting correct. RU-vid is always a great free resource 🤙🏼
Thanks! For pricing, I think it all depends on the client, your skill, what the gig entails, etc. I always bundle my pricing together and just include travel into everything.
I have always wanted to travel and this is something I just thought of. I am already a social media manager/ assistant and I think this is something I can add to my services. It's just the time and money investment that scares me!
I bought my own equipment to start, but you could always rent as well, depending on what you need. Investing in gear can be helpful and is sometimes necessary though.
