Making a living from PHOTOGRAPHY | The HEART stopping moment that changed my life

Every so often you should ask yourself are you doing the thing you would love to do most in the world? If the answer is no then stop what you are doing and make a change. When in Yosemite National Park my heart stopped and I had an accident that changed my life forever. I became a professional photographer and now make a successful living from it. In this video I talk about my story and how I make money from Landscape Photography.

If you love what you do, it doesn't feel like work. Well done on your first year. I'm sure you'll have many more doing the job you love so much. I left my old job (that I hated) to do something I thought I would enjoy more. I wouldn't say I love it, but I certainly enjoy it more than being a Glazier. :) Look forward to seeing more in the coming years.

Probably one of the most enjoyable and inspirational videos you have made to date pal, I love it when people succeed in what they want to do but some deserve it more than others, you being amongst the latter, the hard work you put into your channel, vlogs Instagram and that cracking ebook deserves to be rewarded. Thank you and may your life choice continue to be rewarding for you and all of us 😁

I like your Channel and what you do, You say work hard at what you do to become more proficient. I totally agree, but I think you also look at working smarter not harder, Working harder and achieving your goals is one thing but working smarter also will pay off in the long run. But keep up your great work I do get my insperation from all your work.

I just finished watching this video again, by accident really, and was reminded why I took you on as a mentor to begin with. I had forgotten exactly the story in California and it was good to get that re-attached to my memory. Anyway, very inspirational and I'm happy to see that nothing has changed in that category. You're quite the enjoyment for many on your Sunday morning shows (I now call them shows, they are-- really) and it's been awesome to watch your audience grow. I too have some back and neck issues so that part of your talk on this show was particularly inspirational to me. Anyway, best wishes and stay healthy and before you know it this pandemic will be behind us all. Cheers from Rod in Florida.

Great video Nigel, I'm glad you are able to realise your dreams after such a bad accident. For me photography has been a blessing in helping me overcome depression, going out there into the world and being at one with nature is a great way of taking your mind off of things or putting life into perspective.

You are so inspiring and now I know there is hope for an old software developer! :) My story is the opposite of yours I started out as an art student at university and then I transitioned to writing code after I started a family. Now I'm at a point in my life where I am ready to make art again and the landscape photography bug has captured me. Thanks for taking us on your journey and thanks for the inspiration!

Very interesting vlog and amazing you can make a living from your Photography. The main thing is to enjoy what you do and like yourself have tried consistently to improve my films and show my hobby and what I enjoy doing. However many think that RU-vid is this great goal to achieve many 10's of thousands of subscribers and earn a fortune, but for me I do it as I enjoy it and the main goal was to create a time capsule of my experiences for my family and future family as well as possible inspiration for others. My channel has stayed static for 3 years and can relate to the work involved which many do not realise, but due to my content and format I know I will not grow the lofty levels that many aspire to. However I have fun and as a hobby and for the reasons stated I am more than happy. To be honest the photography is a very difficult subject to vlog on a weekly basis without a lot of experience and knowledge as well as good personal character and the reason only a handful of well known Photo Vloggers have been successful in this medium. Many will copy and paste what they think is the winning formula from others and when they realise the work commitment required they sadly will fall to the wayside. As you say it takes immense amounts of hard work. Key to any good YT channel is knowing your subject , or hobby inside out and putting it out there in your own style and format that nobody else has. For instance a guy I know is into Crypto Currency and started a channel just 5 months ago. Due to his knowledge, fun and quirky filming and good dose of passion he has 130k subscribers and growing fast. Would I love to spend my life out exploring and photographing the Scottish landscape? Of course I would and maybe one day.......Atb

Nigel, you’re one of my landscape photography heroes (along with Mads and Jeroen and Andy M). I also had a sudden cardiac arrest and realized how quickly it can pass. 🤔 Your an inspiration man. If you love what you do, it will never be work. Your videos certainly has a certain style and quality to them. I have a long way to go to be even one quarter as good, but that’s the fun of the journey in working to get there, not being there. I’m sure this video meant much to more than one person, many I’m sure. But even if this video was all inspiring to only just one person, it was worth it as well. Your an awesome dude.

Thanks for this video. I am working hard to become full time in art / landscape photography. I have made strides along the way, a lot of credit is due to the few photographers, that I follow on RU-vid, you being one of them that I look to for ideas, and insight on how to best "see a scene". My single largest hurdle is the feeling that my work has to measure up in some way to other work. I need to find a way to back away from making every image a competition. I love the dog BTW.

Can relate to so many of your comments and quotes here Nigel. In my final year as a professional fire officer and been fortunate to have achieved success which has been derived from hard work and a passion for the various roles I have undertaken. Interesting in how you spoke about the many facets you utilise in your approach to being a full time photographer, was kinda like Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs. Thanks Nigel! I really enjoyed hearing your story. I’m sorry you have to deal with the back pain, but the enthusiasm that shines through that is what is so inspirational.

mate well done. I disagree with you about quality etc.... quality is determinable and what you may think is quality i may not and therefore i wouldnt waste much time on it
