Making a magnetic bolt geocache 

I had one of these last week

Suggestion: Put the nut on BEFORE you cut the bolt. Then when you remove the nut, it cleans and straightens the threads. It acts as a die, chasing the threads. Not only that, but it gives you more surface to hold when cutting with a hacksaw. It's best to hold it in a vise if you have one. You can do any filing before you remove the nut. I've been doing this for well over 50 years. Always put the nut on before cutting the bolt. BTW, lacquer dries in minutes - often even less. You don't have to let it dry overnight. That's why it has been used in industry since the early 1900s to replace varnish. For example, when furniture makers varnished furniture, they had to let it dry for at least 24 hours between coats. It was applied with brushes so it had to be sanded between coats and the last coat had to be sanded with increasingly fine sandpaper and then polished. Very labor intensive and costly. With the advent of lacquer, they could just spray the piece and it was done literally within minutes with possibly a quick polishing. The same goes for musical intruments such as guitars, etc. However, most wood finishers know that varnish or oil finishes are more durable and often look better than lacquer finishes. Anyway, the point is, you don't have to let lacquer dry overnight. You can use whatever you lacquered in just a matter of minutes.
