Making a Mallet With Extra Weight

I figured it was time to stop beating on my chisels with metal hammers, so I dug through my scrap bin and put together a mallet with some Ash and Black Walnut. I fired up my lead melting pot and added about 1.5 pounds of extra weight while I was at it.

Beautifully done. No need for a voice over - anyone with a smidgen of talent can follow you and understand exactly what was done and why. I wish I had the equipment to do projects such as this. Actually this is not just a mallet - it is a work of art and an extension of your imagination.

The ash is gorgeous and the mallet is stunning. Great work. Don't worry about the no commentary, the video came out just fine. In fact, these small projects don't really need commentary. Just take us along for the ride. lol. Many people seem to enjoy watching people make things and some people even fast forward through commentary. Find the right balance with your videos and keep making quality content like this. Thanks

That's a piece of art right there. Nice choice of the Ash/Walnut combo. I too, don't find the lack of commentary to be a problem. Sometimes, it's just nice to watch a project being made as long as there isn't anything complex being done that needs to be explained.

Never would've thought you could dump molten lead? Into wood without something combusting. I'm really enjoying your channel, our work styles are very similar.
@GunflintDesigns
@GunflintDesigns 7 лет назад
Lead has a really low melting point, so as soon as it comes off the heat it starts to harden. It is still really hot and there is a little scorching and smoking, but I have spilled enough of it on my workbench that I was sure it couldn't light the wood on fire.

I made one similar to this except I used lead fishing weights and epoxy to add weight to the mallet. I drilled the holes, filled them with the weights and poured the epoxy in with them. It took a good while to set up solid but made a good mallet, probably not quite as heavy as this one, but certainly usable. Good way to make it if you don't have a lead melting pot.
@GunflintDesigns

Yep, that's a good method too. I've also seen people used weights or bb's, but no epoxy, that way it acts like a dead-blow mallet.

Wow, now that is one gorgeous mallet. It's amazing how the grain just pops when hit will shellac or even water. And the idea of melting lead to fill the mallet with to give it weight is brilliant. I plan on making some mallets and push blocks for my family members who are all in the "Wood" business. I hated the idea of using bebe shots that many other RU-vidrs put in their mallets. Though working with lead without a respirator or even keeping the melting lead outside so it doesn't cause long-term harm, is a must for me. I figure I can set it up right outside my shop door. So far, I'm loving your content and even in this video you didn't speak during the build was fine. If I could follow what you were doing anyone could.
@GunflintDesigns
@GunflintDesigns 6 лет назад
I'm glad you like it! And working with melted lead can definitely be a health hazard. In good weather I use that furnace outside. When I use it inside, I have all my shop doors wide open which makes for really good ventilation, and I have my vent fans running from the time I turn it down until it is cool to the touch again. Also, I don't let my kids with rapidly developing little brains in the shop on those days at all.
