Making a Maple Bowl with Maple and Walnut Inserts

I really like the idea of taking a damaged wood turned bowl rough and fixing it with wood inserts. In this project, I made segmented round inserts from maple and walnut wood. I cut out the knots from a monolithic maple wood turned bowl blank and replaced them with the round segmented pieces. In both the insert and the cut out in the bowl, I made a 3゚ taper on the contacting surface of each. I cut this taper with a 3゚ tapered bit on the CNC machine. This taper allowed the insert to be pressed into the bowl to get a very tight fit.
What I really like about the way this project turned out is that the wood grain of the bowl and the geometric inserted pieces talk to each other. The inserted pieces aren’t just in a random place. They are where the knots were so the form of the grain and the form of the segments have a relationship. I think this is what makes this art as it goes beyond random adjacencies.

Nobody is really talking about your level of taste! .... I see so many woodworking videos where the skills are top notch, and then end product is kind of a loud garish piece. This is so beautiful. Wish it were mine.

Woodturning videos are not usually my favorite videos put out by woodworkers but you sir are a completely different animal! Your woodturning videos are riviting. I love the combination of problem solving, CNC, wood harvesting story and narration. It's always a pleasure to see a new Howarth video pop up in my feed!

Frank, I think that the workings of your mind is not of this Earth. That you are an artist of very high degree is a given. Your excellent technical skills are perfectly melded to the alien and artistic parts of your being. This is why I love all aspects of your work, most especially your documentation, which allows me to see the progression of your various projects. :-) Thank you for sharing.

With all the design skills, woodworking prowess and video wizardry aside, you're plain and simple one of the best story tellers out there. A true inspiration to anyone who went into the shop and set out to create something. The only thing I'm missing is the sound of that cello. I hope it features again in one of your videos soon.

1. I am so glad I found this channel. Amazing and focused work~ 2. What a treasure trove of tools! 3. Have you ever pulled an overnighter? 4. Who does the laundry and how many washing machines and dryers have you gone through? Thanks for the voice over sound bites, it makes the video so much more interesting. And yes, my mind screamed when the branch was destroyed and in all honesty, I love the cracks and what we see as imperfections but Mother Nature knows best...most of the time.

The old branch wound would have looked phenomenal cast in resin- maybe next time? I'm always picking up scraps from work with little inclusions like that or spots where I know a void will be. My favorites are where branches were rubbing and creating this finish smooth pocket or edge along the branch.....one day I'll do something with the box under my kitchen table!
