The Evolving Bass. This video is the 3rd sneak peak into the workshop Puglisi and reveals the procedure of making the Scroll of the Double Bass.
"Behind-the-Scenes: Making the Meyer Double Bass," inspired by the amazing music and sound of virtuoso Edgar Meyer.
I was lucky enough to meet with him in 2019 and had access to his Italian labelled instrument, and it turned out to be a passion project I just couldn't resist.
Part 3 reveals my procedure for making the Scroll of this stunning Double Bass using some well aged Italian Maple
Set to music From Tamara Murphy - Spirograph studies,
Nick Abbey- Phantoms,
The Rookies - Stay Weird
Filmed entirely by myself in the winter of 2020 -

Nice work Atelier. I built a teardrop double bass and now I'm bowing well enough to keep the neighborhood cats away.

Considering that's maple you're carving, you've got some seriously sharp knives.

I've been struck with an idea to build an electric upright bass. I'm trying to replicate the Yamaha SLB300 somewhat. I surched the internet for dimensions or some kind of diagram with measurements. All I can find is the spices for the finger board. I'm using that to scale out the rest of it by inches to feet using pictures on my phone. It's hard work. So far I've managed to make a finger board and the neck. Of course I'm trying to save money by doing this so, that's the whole reason. But I know I can. I just need dimensions. I'm going today to get a big piece of maple to make the real neck. Thanks for your videos. I love the art of hand carving.

I always wondered how and why the scroll shape end up being synonimous to the violin instrument familly ( i know there is some without..). I also also always find the shape quite arbitrary and complex. But when i see it being made , by a quite simple process, i understand better. The work is very impressive, with a 3D organic look edit: The tuning machines are gorgeous

Thanks. I know it's a cliche… However I always think of the expression when I'm looking at a big block of rectangular Maple. "remove everything that doesn't look like a scroll"... And it just reveals itself.

Absolutely stunning artistry. Beautiful tuning machines. Do you remove them to when you varnish?
@atelierpuglisi
@atelierpuglisi 2 года назад
Yes I fit Machine Heads on prior to fitting the neck. I then take them off again to varnish. They are individually made by and designed by Zachary Martin, Rhode Island.

Have you ever made/heard/seen a bass without the traditional scroll? I was wondering what the tone would be like without the additional mass at the end of the neck. Gene in usa
@atelierpuglisi
@atelierpuglisi 4 месяца назад
There's a number of people that have made headless instruments and even more ornate scrolls. Helps to pack it away in a case for travelling that's for sure. Definitely the extra mass at the top of the fingerboard helps to balance out the vibration on the neck. Instruments that I have tried, without a headstock have seemed thin in tone. However, a huge part of the optics of the violin family is the Fibonacci, scroll thats for sure. There is also a noticeable change when adding the C extension which needs to be the correct weight. Not too heavy, not too light...

I'm surprised to learn that the back of the peg box is closed on bass. I'm more used to seeing peg boxes being open on both ends. Guess I just haven't gotten a good enough look before.

Wonderful video thankyou! Gorgeous florets of maple whilst defining the fluting on the turns. If I may ask, do you remove/mitigate the hollow grind created by the Tormek with hand stones or by adding a secondary bevel? Or is it a mix and match with each tool requiring tweaks to the grinds?
@atelierpuglisi
@atelierpuglisi 3 года назад
Hi Glen. Glad you like the videos. I nearly always tried to achieve a good hollow grind, particularly with the pairing chisels and my planes. With the Japanese stones I'm just trying to get the fine edge razor sharp.
