Very impressive actions on all the baits! I might suggest getting some polarizing filters for your cameras, especially the action camera. It will dampen the water reflection and really help you show the action. I’m not sure, but it should also help with the reflection on the clear coats, and really make the colors pop on your finished products. I bought an aluminum frame for my Osmo action, and I can screw in a 52 mm polarizing lens. The sun glare really goes away with one on. If I knew your lens sizes I would send you some. I’m confident it would be worth it.

It's really neat to see a school of paddlers comin up the Missouri forming a giant "V" that you can see from a half a mile away.

I brought a 3 foot shovelnose back to Great Falls from Slippery Anne and turned it loose in my dad's flooded shower. Paddlefishing? Try the upper Missouri for current.

Having seen a great many specimens of this fish live, I see a paddlefish, period. 4 months ago was February, no wonder there's ice all over the place. Trying to tie even a tail fly would be very difficult for me to.

We still have them in Pennsylvania. On occasion they will be caught here in the Allegheny river mostly in the deeper water roughly 20 feet or deeper near the hydro plants where the water is warmer. The local bait shop has a picture of the last one we know was caught and it was about 3 1/2 feet long.

Make a cutthroat trout like that brown trout and I can tell you a lake in the Bob Marshall Wilderness where you'll have to fish all day to get a dolly under 3 feet long. (Grizzly)

Is that brown trout bate for sail bc I think that that baits would work really good for catching salmon and steel head in rivers

I worked for a company called Big Fish Farms. Located in Ohio close to the Ohio river. We sustainability raised, ranched and harvested paddlefish for their fine caviar. As well as their delicious meat. We were allowed to do this because the company has several green project contracts. It is illegal to snag paddlefish in many states and many states have a season for it. They are protected in a lot of places. Beautiful beautiful fish and I hope many feel the same. They deserve the utmost respect. They are ancient and have occupied our rivers much longer than most. Such amazing animals. Fyi they do not truly know what the rostrum is used for, or if it has feeling in it.

Chinese paddlefish are super awesome, one of the coolest fish to live on our planet alongside humans. Unfortunately dam construction and overharvest has lead to dramatic decline in the last decades and it was actually declared functionally extinct very recently. It’s possible there are a few left but they haven’t been seen in so long biologists believe they are extinct.

Hey Nate you should try a lure that you burn with a torch and get that burnt wood look and then treat it with a poly of some sort and just leave it natural and see how it looks.

paddlefish WILL in fact actively strike lipless crankbaits when they are spawning.... i've caught alot of them below the Barkley Dam in KY...... and recently we've been catching a few here in Pennsylvania below the Kinzua Dam.

I fished (snagged) for paddlefish on the Missouri River for 35 years, I saw many paddlers killed. Despite my attitude toward this fish, I chased them for decades, the biggest one I ever saw was a 96 incher that the fish and game dude said went 138-4. It was a big one. A female. I quit paddlefishing in the late 1980's. They aren't real good on a plate in my opinion.

But the Chinese paddlefish, once a common freshwater fish in the region, is no longer a member of this vast ecosystem.

I've seen many paddlers swimming in the upper Missouri river. The biggest I've seen was a 138 pound 4 ounce fish that was 95" long (beak to tail). Caught on the Missouri river.

So after googling largest chinese paddlefish, I've come to tell you that so says the article, probably less than 100 chinese paddlefish remain.... Last one was seen in 2003.... :(

I can tell you from many years of jugging for catfish in the Ozarks, paddlefish will definitely go after chicken liver, and hot dogs.

In July of 2022 the Chinese paddlefish was officially declared extinct. Sorry to ruin your bucket list fish. Something else will come along. Great vid.

Small important note for anyone curious. The Chinese Paddlefish is declared extinct as of mid to late 2022 due to many issues in Chinese River Systems particularly the Yangtze and Yellow River water basins. They have been estimated to be extinct sometime from '05 to 2010 i believe as well, so I would not recommend going to China and trying to catch a 20 foot one as it would be highly unlikely at this stage.

So hear me out....Build yourself a nice shop for bait making festivities. In the build, account for a testing tank so you dont have to go out and find unfrozzen winter water to test swim. That leaves you to only driving to catch fish on ONE DAYS!

Can 100% confirm there is still paddlefish in lake Erie. Chautauqua lake in NY York that is fed from lake Erie. Chautauqua lake has a program for paddlefish and is quite literally a sanctuary. They then introduced them Into kinzua dam just south of pa border and they swam down from Chautauqua through the conewango creek and back into the Allegheny my buddy saw a 100+ pounder 4+ foot dead on the shore after a super bad storm and the dam had to dump a bunch of water out do to needing energy when the storm fucked a bunch of stuff. My buddy also saw one swimming right Infront of him thought it was a shark at first

The shape of the brown trout looks just like a saltwater spot i made for my grandpa. And like yours the action was crazy. I think there’s something to super fat baits with a lot of weight in it

I have false teeth from the 'braces' I had to wear when I was a kid. Modern dentistry has really evolved. I tried to skin a paddle back in the early 80's, not easy. The skull of a paddler has very thin hide from the gills to the beak. I know why the other mounts always 'leaked' oils, too.

Sometimes dressing a tail hook too much can deaden a bait's action. Check out some videos or look at stuff in a store. This is my only constructive criticism. Keep practicing! I've been tying for 23 years. It takes lots of time.

It's a scientific separation between a "nose" which is an olfactory organ used for scent perception, and any nose like structures not used for scent 🤷‍♂️. Paddle fish, sword fish, saw fish, lots of fish examples. Also Beatles and other bugs weird face weapons, etc... 😁🙋‍♂️

You missed the opportunity to make a flow-through paddle fish…..big wide mouth open and outlets through the gills……maybe another option down the road🤔

Manicurist drill! Better than a Dremel! Minor vibration, doesn’t yank when turned on high and you can control it with a dial or foot pedal. Better control and you can use super small bits. Hope this helps

Be sure to toss out any tying materials that small "gamey!" It will attract moths and beetles that decimate all your materials. Keep a tiny bit of moth ice (not moth balls) in the zip locks with any natural materials, especially anything collected from the wild. Oh yeah - great video!!

Hear me out, I know it’s a little counterintuitive to do but with how beautiful your baits are I’d consider making the weak point what holds your hook on to the bait. I’ve watched every single one of your videos and I think it’s totally possible to connect your treble or single hook with a split ring strong enough to pull in a pike but weak enough to break before your line. What do you think?
