This is no longer just making baits.. this has turned into making fine art! It’s actually insane the level of baits that you’ve been putting out lately
I go to the Suwannee river/gulf of Mexico very often and those sturgeon are very very common you defiantly need to keep an eye out when going very fast around there
This might be too crazy, but you could try a Stingray lure - I think the only way would be to have a 3-piece lure with a flat oval centre piece and two semi-circle ‘wings’ either side. Might not be possible but would be very interesting :)
that would be really cool, like the floppy brass fin catfish lure or the jointed fin mooneye, but even more insane edit: or this one, I hadn't watched far enough to see the floppy fins when I commented this
Sturgeon are in trouble mostly in European rivers due to overfishing and using them for caviar. Interestingly, it used to be custom for fishermen in Britain to offer sturgeon they'd caught to the Royal family. Amazing work, as ever
The columbia river system in b.c. and Washington used to have criticaly low amounts of sturgeon but the last 5 years or so you can no longer really bottom fish for trout and whitefish because all you catch is 3 foot sturgeon. Its a good sign and hopefully my kids can fish them in 15 years when numbers are good to open up catch n release
It’s incredible how well you tolerate that tedious work and attention to detail. I don’t think there’s many people who can do that for a living. Watching that 5k dollar gator gill hit the water like a bowling ball hurt to watch! It’s crazy how you actually fish them. Appreciate your content!
Wels catfish multi jointed swimbait mouth open like the bass, unnecessarily long stick bait, gizzard gill: shad + alligator, alligator gar wake bait, fish eating a fish eating a fish swimbait
Chelsie do fly tying, another comments responding/awnsering comments video, don't sue me for having a similar design to your flub dub working on it right now, DO A COLLAB WITH NICK FROM 618 FISHING and do a remaster of his rattlesnake wakebait but add A RATTLINGL tail, make what I call the whopper plopper 85 it's a perfect mix between the 75 and the 90
This goes beyond being a lure, this is more like a work of art. What looks like really bland color as you put it is a beautiful transition and blend of colors in a flawless way. This is definitely one of my favorite lures you've done so far!
Thank you you inspired me to make my first lure (I’m 13). I watched tons of your videos for inspiration and to get the perfect formula, and it worked first try!
most members of the Acipenser genus are endangered which includes the bulk of the sturgeon, the shovelnose is not a member of that genus however another species in its genus called the Pallid Sturgeon is endangered in the U.S. and the caviar is going to be from species of the acipenser genus so dont try any roe you get from a shovelnose. Great video as usual Nate
to add to this, there are species of predatory sturgeon that have much larger mouths fixated towards the front of their heads, shovelnose are not one of those species and thats why they have the mouths on the bottom, like most of the "smaller sturgeon" they feed on scraps of animal material and insect larvae. the ones that are are mostly predatory would be from the Huso genus which is also the largest
Had an interesting idea for a bait today. It's not the first time someone has made something like this, but the bait is a fish (probably large mouth bass) chasing another smaller fish. I've seen some vintage baits that did this out of one block of wood, but I think it would be cool to have two separate baits connected by a leader. I realize you made a similar bait before (the chatter buddy), but if done right, you might be able to get other bass to follow it like they do when one is trying to eat. The front fish would esetualy have no action, but the chasing fish could have a joint and possibly have a great action.
Here in germany, specifically in Bavaria we used to have native stergeons (sterlet) which you can no longer find in our river systems in (bavaria)there are still sturgeon in germany, but usually by the larger citys where most our main rivers pass through. But finding them close to the size yall have em, would be a 1 in every 20-30 years catch. Great build! Really enjoyed it
First "melk" and now scutes. Can't wait to see what happens when he gets to caramel. Besides that, cool lure. I think a soft plastic version would be fun.
They are definitely endangered overall. They’re heavily protected in northern idaho (where I live). Their numbers are a sad remanent of what they once were. Beautiful and protected fish. One of my favorites ever.
22 feet is closer to the length of a mini school bus - they're usually around 35 feet long. If you want to really reflect how big that largest sturgeon is, orcas are around 20 feet long. Or you could imagine stacking two basketball hoops on top of each other, because basketball hoops are 10 feet tall.
Marriage rule in my house: No watching Marling baits without your spouse... so glad because this video is 15/10! I've missed the fun facts, and your floating self at the bottom took it over the top lol. Doggo shots added a point, but no little doing bike circles made you lose two. Thanks for the content.
They breach because the pressure dissolves the gases in their swim bladders over time. When they lose their buoyancy they breach to adjust it. It’s fairly common when they get hooked. I believe it confuses them when they are pulled off the bottom and that is why some of them breach.
Same for me about the same length's too. 18 / 58 . Little guy was coffee colored and rough like sandpaper. Big guy was smooth, grayish and took 55 minutes to land, jumping out of the water many times.
As always great work with the knife and with the paint. Now about why it is endangered. It's simple, you are a smart guy, you could figure it out, but it's a combination of several factors - all of them men made. Heavy fishing industry - black caviar is not cheap, dams - the fish migrates up and down the river when throwing its eggs, heavy boat movement and pollution with all kind of chemicals, combined with slow reproduction cycles and the fact that only 10% of the survived small fish reaches sexual maturity. In Bulgaria in the river Danube in the past there was a lot of fish called Beluga. I think this is the specie that become larger than the others - 102 kg and around 6 meters. We also have other smaller species like sterlet. Last but not least, I think you could make the barbels from soft plastic. They would be way more realistic.
Nooooooooo!!!! Don’t do it!!! Don’t put a lip on the GatorGill! That’s sucker belongs in a wall just as is; with all of the giant mutant natural glide bait vibes that it puts off; no lip (or action for that matter) is needed unless you plan to fish it for Muskies or in the Amazon, and either way you can kiss it goodbye. But… I suppose if you really feel it needs a lip; do whatever gives you peace at night
I'm from Lewiston Idaho on the Snake River. Chunk of Northern Pike Minnow with Redman Chewing Tobacco tied around it is the best bait. I've caught a thousand of them!
Incredible!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!👍 We are now at 24 exclamation points! I added a new one for the 23rd time! Next video will be the 25th "!"! 🙂 Hope you enjoy🤔 Everyone let me know if you think I should continue with this comment or stop, in the comments down below.
I used to go sturgeon fishing all the time when I was younger and I miss it. I remember one cut my dad's hand so he washed it off in the nasty water and his hand swelled up like a balloon with like 3 infections and was in the hospital for a week then as soon as he got out he was right back sturgeon fishing
Dont put a lip on the gator gill just move the line tie to the base of the nose between the eyes. I think the mouth will catch enough water to make it have an action
It blows my mind how you've become so efficient that you're able to make a lure in a day from scratch. I've been making injection lures through cnc and sometimes it takes me over 30 iterations and months of work just to get them to swim right.
Early to mid summer on the James River (Va) I take family out on the boat to see the sturgeon jumping. Seeing a 6ft fish jump is amazing and the closest thing I can say it sounds like is throwing a concrete block off of bridge.
@@TheGreyGhost_of43rd from City point Hopewell where the James and Appomattox come together all the way up to Jimmie Deans mansion or down to the Benjamin Harris bridge is prime in early summer!
Nice to hear Benjamin Todd and Matt Heckler in this video. Saw them play together back in October. Good music, good people, and good baits are what make this channel great.
As a guy who fishes the Suwannee river a lot, not only is the story of the 5 year old girl told quite often, you also don’t know the true meaning of fear till your running 60+ mph and a literal swimming rock comes flying out of the water. Have had multiple buddies hit them and it’s never a pretty aftermath
i have heard a lot more stories than the 5 year old girl, i thought that was just the one i heard the most because she was my uncle's best friend's daughter
This is one of my favorite Marling creations. Sturgeon are so cool, and the thumbnail looked too good to be real. Totally awesome it is, and the bait turned out beautiful.
Nice video I live a few miles from Lake Erie There used to be a huge number of Sturgeon in Lake Erie But over fishing for the eggs and meat caused a large percent of loss in numbers They are being reintroduced into a number of the local rivers and Lake Erie I caught a 3' sturgeon several years ago As I was fishing for catfish
