Shows what your machining skills are and that's very good with just a manual lathe. That looks to be a cast billet of Al your'e getting ready to turn at 2:17
I know that's what I was thinking ,so you don't need a dial you just need something to indicate that it's got movement. Your videos are very inspiring now that I have a four jaw Chuck and I'm not working on a 7x10 harbor freight lathe anymore

it's a hobby. if I had a rifle, I would still be engaged in the creation of home-made PSPs, a firearm is a tool for killing, you aim a crosshair and a bullet flies there, it's not interesting ..
I was teaching at a trade school for 12 years in Orlando Fl. and taught around 12,000 students in that time (usually double shifts as we only had 2 instructors for 3 classes, 7:30 am until 11:30pm for 3~4years) Total instructor count was 127 for various sections of 12~24 month course but even then we really needed 135 instructors The vast majority of 'kids' (16~73yrs) just want to 'press a button' and not have to think about what they are doing. (common sense went away a long time ago) It seems only hobbyists and 'old' people like me do manual machining any more (I trained in the mid 1970's) Using lathe as a horizontal mill takes some careful thought, Mechanic messin does a great job particularly as he makes it look so easy (which it isn't)
Those skills aren’t lost in America. They are being utilized in basements and garages by those who can’t afford or simply can’t CNC. A diy pcp is on my list of things to do.
