Question: how do you feel if the meteorite is actually real? I recently received a meteorite ring. The widmanstatten pattern doesn't look smooth though, it looks scratched or etched. The rest of the ring is titanium though and it's magnetic. Just curious how one could tell.

Our wedding rings are made of meteorite. The outter ring is meteorite, the inner ring is white gold. We were advised this combination because the meteorite we use (from Sweden, which is dated older than the earth) is quite rough (similar to the one in the video) and would potentially irritate your skin over time. Plus we really liked the combined look :-)
@caidNL
@caidNL 7 лет назад
Thanks :-) I think they were also a bit cheaper because we went with 50% width white gold. So that helped us a bit ;-)

Great video, I like that you kept it longer, even if it's a simple ring. When you buy meteorite, what kind of assurance do you get from your supplier that it's authentic? Now I'm curious how common meteorite fragments are and what is the reason is for the long crystal structures, you'd think cooling in the vacuum of space would cause a small crystal structure.
@vaultman88
@vaultman88 7 лет назад
That explains it! Cool!
@Nick-zp1dw
@Nick-zp1dw 7 лет назад
About the long crystal structures, google: 'steel dendrite'. It is kind of difficult to explain, partly due to the size of the explanation xd. Science of materials is a study which also covers this subject, so for further interest, google that or go to a university :)
@Nick-zp1dw
@Nick-zp1dw 7 лет назад
The crystal structure is partly due to it existing of multiple 'fases' (materials) which each have a different melting point and saturation point. A lot of complicated processes later, this form or shape appears which is called dendrite.

If something non-metallic materials are inside the meteorite, what would happen when drilling......
@liamholcroft7212
@liamholcroft7212 6 лет назад
seems to mee that it is made up of a mixture of different metal crystals, mostly iron i would assume. but there is usually non metals in there too which could cause the drill bit to snap. and almost definitely dull. but with enough lubricant and the right bit, you can drill through stone.

@Vizual_Racing
@Vizual_Racing 6 лет назад
I'm almost 100% positive that it's not a real meteorite ring. Meteorite is roughly $300.00 per GRAM. Unless this guys has deeper pockets than Bill Gates. That big ass chunk of "Meteorite" would not be possible to buy. Figure at $300 a gram, 1 pound of meteorite is about a million dollars.
@caffeinatedspider3224
@caffeinatedspider3224 6 лет назад
You are misinformed. Only top-quality or significant specimens go for hundreds of dollars per gram; you can get random fragments for a few dollars per gram. Either way, it's obvious that it is real meteorite by the crystal structure revealed by the acid etching, which doesn't happen to terrestrial iron.

I ordered this ring. It was $100 extra to get the 8mm width to have a ring that matched this video. It arrived with the meteorite detaching from the liner, with the smaller width despite that I had paid extra. It arrived a month later than they said I could expect it. I would not recommend this brand. I am $1300 out and will now miss my proposal window/plans because of it.

I might be wrong, but this looks like gibeon, if so, a tiny piece of the material costs like 300 bucks... So, it's obvious why the ring costs like 1k + the fact that meteorites don't fall from sky every day

There is something special about wearing a meteorite ring. That piece of rock (metal in this case) fell down on Earth fairly recently. It hasn't been a part of Earths geological history, but it shares its place of origin with the whole Solar system (probably), meaning that all the atoms in it and in you were a part of the same dust cloud in which the Sun burst into life. Wearing this ring, it's sort of reunification in my eyes.... Yup, I'm corny....
@rogerjrusa

I have a question for you. What would have happened if you have lapped the ring, after the acid etch with finer and finer grades of aluminum oxide, finishing with 5 micron zirconium oxide to remove all of the scratches, and finally doing a second shorter duration etching, before sealing? I'm imagining a brighter, more uniform result with more contrast. I would be interested in reading your thoughts on how that might turn out.

Every video I watch about jewelry making adds at least one machine I'll need to add to the workshop. At this rate I'll need to buy a warehouse.

Not a geology expert, but I have a piece of meteorite that fell in Russia and it looks nothing like that. That looks like a rough piece of steel. Just my two cents.

Should try forging them carefully, your method seems to be very material consuming. And that is a shame for such a rare and awesome material. Still awesome work.

I greatly enjoy what you have made. A for myself I wear an iron meteorite around my neck. "For reasons." I would love it if you would make me a ring. What do you need from me to make this happen?

I was kinda bummed during the whole middle part, since it lost the crystalline texture and just looked like metal, but then you saved it. Really awesome!

Dude I'm not sure if it's this video but my 5th grade science got his wedding ring done by someone like you, and showed it of to the class. I'm pretty sure the teachers name was Mr Flores or something

I do not know the chemical/physical properties of this metal but would it be possible to heat it up in a forge and fold it like you would with Damascus steel? I'd imagine you could get some really interesting patterns.

The ring is very nice I just wish you used better methods making it to produce less waist. A good portion is waisted to drilling were a hole saw could save material for use in other projects, keep your meteorite waste to a minimum it'll help you cut costs

I wish I wasn't poor, I'd buy one of every ring in a heartbeat. me and my significant thought about getting meteorite/dino bone rings as wedding rings. now I kinda wanna have you make some rings for us instead :D

ok. so basically you could buy 22.4 gramms of muonionalusta (meteorite stuff) for 34 dollars then go somewhere whith a machine like thos make the ring and drop it ind that chemical or buy a cheap ring out of a certain metal and drop it in a chemical with a similar effect instead of buying an 800 dollar ring no hate just logical finacially thinking great videp i love it

What is the source for the material? It's already been processed from meteor ore and just purchased? Certainly a raw meteor off the ground is not suitable, or is it?

I made one from yellow and black dinosaur bone stone and meteorite. Difficult but fun. I like your channel Sir.

I would get myself one of these, but there's no way of knowing, unless you found yourself, if that is the real thing or just simply whatever made of random metals.

Where do you source your meteorite from? Does it come with some COA/ guarantee that it is real, authentic meteorite?

could you do one with black main body, silver veins, and an inlay for diamonds circling around the band but inside the inlay? much like the glowing meteorite one.

Like the ring but, as at trained tool maker I have some concerns in the way you are showing the use of a lathe with the guard removed and the big No No of putting your finger into a revolving chuck madness use a dowel, and when polishing the outer diameter use the emery paper on top, not in between the bed and work as this is another entrapment area But you did use gloves on the chemicals 👍

I have a piece about half the size you made the ring out of. i have been trying to figure out what metal it is, now looking at yours I'm not so sure it's not a meteorite. The problem I was having is that it doesn't stick to a magnet at all. almost looks like silver. About like your meteorite does in the video.

just wondering when you are working with this metal, is it not advisable to use any lubrication considering how smoky it got when it was first drilled.
