"I put things down, not away." I completely relate to this, and have more stuff that's down and needs to be put away than I'd like to admit. For whatever reason I'm getting a strong Inspector Gadget vibe from this coat. All you're missing is a hidden helicopter attachment you can use to fly around with.

My favorite build yet! Two suggestions. Several commenters were concerned about large sleeves and power tools. I would add a strap with a few snaps to your cuffs so that you can cinch those sleeve ends a little tighter when you need to, like winter coats sometimes feature. It can also serve as a place to stick rings, or carabiners, or other things with holes. Also, your machine should be able to do automatic buttonholes. In the future, you can use a buttonhole foot, and the button hole setting on a sewing machine to finish buttonholes properly. They will last longer and look better. As a sewer, it delighted me to see you doing a more sewing oriented project. You are essentially doing what is called rectangular construction which is how clothing was made in the early medieval era. Well done, sir, and keep levelling those sewing skills!

Seconding the buttonhole, though the sewing machine featured in this video looked like it might be the leather one he's used before? The foot certainly looked different from a standard home sewing machine. Also, while super glue is pretty good, I'd suggest maybe fray check next time (which is probably super glue-adjacent, but specific for fabric).

As a firefighter myself, I feel the need to warn you: that fire extinguisher powder is HIGHLY corrosive. They tell us to never use it in a car shop if we have any other option or every car is going to be scrap metal... (Or basic rule: powder extinguishers should only be used outdoors.) And wear your dust mask. As always, I love your video. Just the right combination of madness, craftsmanship, entertainment and inspiring instructions.

You might consider covering the exposed sleeve seams with ribbon, either black like the lining or in an accent colour. If nothing else it'll protect the raw edges a little better, but if you go with the accent colour option it also adds a nice little finish that only you'll know about.

Just a small suggestion from a costumer/seamstress, if you're using linen or a linen blend, it's important to finish your raw edges or everything will fray. If you don't have a serger you can french seam it, or use a zig-zag stitch. You put so much work into this I'd want to see it last! It's amazing, and now I want one! It was fun to see how much enthusiasm you have with this one! My adhd says hi to yours.

Nice artificer coat! I really like the design of the leather triangle for the button flap, it adds a lot of style. Wool would have been safer than cotton or linen because it doesn't want to burn. It's hard to find 100% wool at fabric stores though. Hard to find real linen there either, most of the stuff called linen at those places is just linen colored or a blend where the dominant fiber isn't linen at all. Big box stores seem to only like plastics, chemically processed woody fibers (like rayon), and cotton for fabric choices. Traditional natural fibers like linen, wool, and hemp are hard to get and it's frustrating. The elastic and cord holes would probably be more secure with button holes, stopping fraying is what they're for. Since it's a little late for that, maybe adding a little fray check would be good. What you have will probably wear out and start fraying faster than you think. BTW, you can add a gusset to the sleeves so that you can raise your arms better. It's just a diamond shape added to the armpit seams. They're used all the time in movies to make suits fighting ready.

What you described about the armscye is typically the exact opposite of what happens with a suit jacket. The “arm holes” on cheaper suits are huge, meaning they connect lower on the torso, which keeps you from being able to separate your arms from your torso. Smaller arm holes give you more range of motion as long as it isn’t cutting into your armpit, or too small in the shoulders

This is so epic. It does not even seem real its so incredible. Also, I find it nice that you know how to sew as a guy. I know that all yhe historical fashion RU-vidrs I follow are Ladies, and that sewing can be seen as girly sometimes. But its just such a useful skill to have and should really be known by more people in general, no matter who they are.

I see a lot of folks have covered the buttonhole angle :-) Another sewing tip would be to not sew up the bottom seam until you've let it hang completely done for a few days - that allows the fabric to settle into its drape and then you can cut the hem evenly and sew it together. OR - even better, hem the exterior and the liner separately giving you access to the interior in the future if you ever need it. Fabulous build. I love everything about it!

If you have to have material on the inside of a seam, there are seam finishing techniques that can make that cleaner and protect it from fraying. Felling looks really nice and is fairly sturdy, and it’s the option I would recommend in this case. You trim one side of the seam allowance short, fold the long side over it and then lay that sandwich o’ fabric flat towards the trimmed side (this hides both raw edges under that untrimmed side). Then just hand sew it down with a hemming stitch.
@jeffreyharville1918

I do like this build! Here is a suggestion for different cosplay and renfairs, Make two of these and wear one inside the other. I.E. -- one robe of the same colors as used in this video, and another with, maybe, a woodland camo and a blaze orange liner. In that way you can wear the off/white on the outside for one scene, then turn it in-side out for a black side out, for another scene. THEN, you can take the camo and blaze orange inner robe, and wear it on the outside and (in one case) use the camo to "disappear" in the forrest. Or turn it inside out to become more visible if you need to be seen. Just an idea. Keep it up!!

One thing you could do to take this up another level if you're concerned about fire safety would be to make it out of the same material they use for fire fighter jackets or welder's aprons.

That is a awesome project. Since you asked for suggestions, if you're going to do more large sewing projects I'd recommend looking at getting a overlocker, it save a ton of time and effort. Since it's for a workshop I'd deliberately leave the sleeves a couple of inches short so it's harder to catch them. Finally if you're looking for cheap fabric bed sheets are a great option, plus they're wider than most of what you can get from a fabric store.
@coreyz.2800
@coreyz.2800 9 месяцев назад
Personally the one thing I would critique here is make the "powder of fire dousing" THE most accessible item in this cloak. When it comes down to it you'd much rather have to fiddle around to find a tool or flashlight than to find the thing that may keep your workshop (or entire house) from burning down. Fire extinguishing equipment, chemical burn treatment, etc., basically anything you'd need in an emergency situation in which panic is waging was against clarity of thought you want to have these things as close as hand and ready to deploy as humanly possible. It could literally save a life; namely yours.

Using the button hole function on your sewing machine would go a long way to making less bulk/weight wherever you pass through fabric. A vent/dart along the center bottom of the back will make it easier to make longer strides (you might need to run from orcs).

Minor note, but with arm holes? counter intuitively sticking the edge of the whole closer to your armpit actually lets you lift your arm *higher* - modern suits have the problem that they've lowered the edge of the hole so that ti sits better when standing still, but they're less practical for it. If you look at old 18th/early19thC ones I believe they're much tighter into the armpit. This was extremely annoying when I first saw it pointed out (....Bernadette Banner? I think?) but made sense when I properly thought about it (you need *some* space obviously)

Very cool! I saw someone mention bias tape to cover the inside sleeve seams, but a more fantasy/historical option would be felling them. Bernadette Banner can explain this better (lol), but you basically make a swiss roll of fabric, then use a whip stitch to attach it just to the lining fabric. If you have two pieces of fabric at the seams, cut one of them a bit shorter so it fits inside the swiss roll. A felled seam ends up being flat and is pretty strong, making it a good choice for parts that get a lot of stress!

Here's a cool idea for anyone wanting to recreate this if you want to keep your shirt from riding up. The idea is to make the torso's arm holes more like how a singlet's arm holes are shaped (I think you'd call it a tank top in the US, or a vest in the UK). Then you attach a huge gusset to each arm hole. This gusset should really be more like a loop of fabric with a thicker middle to it, because if you've done it right the piece so far should have the same upper body coverage as the torso section of a T-Shirt, but have baggy sections under the armpits. From there, you just attach the sleeves the same way you would on a normal shirt. What this does is provide extra fabric under the armpits, so that the torso doesn't follow the arms when you raise your arms above your head. I believe they do something similar with some activewear shirts in the modern day, but the best example of what I'm talking about is in a medieval arming doublet, where they often did this to stop the gambeson from riding up under your plate armour.

One could have cut slits in the inner liner and sew like pocket flaps to be able to access it all plus you could leave the ends of arms fully undone so you can fit the liner and then pull the arms in to the slits to sew the hems. I kinda need to do this to a coat of mine and been thinking about how to make a cut to add in a pocket for the inner along with being able to get to where I want to install the patches.

Get one, you will wonder how you got along without one.
