This week we're back in the bow making shop whipping out an osage orange recurve self bow. No talking, no explanation other than what you see. Just straight up primitive bow building. If you're into the ASMR stuff, this one's for you. We'll start with a bow stave and use simple hand tools to cut, scrape, and rasp a recurve bow from the wood.
Don't forget to subscribe to the channel. We're uploading a new video each week that features one of the following topics: archery, bow hunting, bow building, survival skills, bushcraft, self reliance, primitive skills, primitive bows, hunting, camping, fishing, and a lot more!
Big thanks to our partners who help support these videos!

Why wait, man! Clay makes it look both easy and magical, but if you have a few tools around, and so much as a thicket of volunteer trees anywhere around you are brave enough to cut, you can make a hell of a bow. I've "known" Clay for years just on online archery and bowmaking forums, and he is a master, and Osage orange is THE wood......bit I've made over a hundred and only two were osage. The rest were every other wood under the sun: elm, ash, mulberry, chokecherry, maple, plum, locust, hickory, etc.. a 3" diameter, straight little tree grown in the shade, up to your nose, with small knots only, and ypu can make a bow in a couple weeks! A machete or hatchet, a rasp, a scraper, maybe a little plane, some sandpaper. A couple clamps, a 2x4, and a stove-top, and you got this....

I have a 55 inch hickory stave I cut 3 days ago and it has a natural bend in it that I am going to use as the back side. Toward one end about a foot from where the string knock will be the wood is bending more toward the belly side. Should I straighten that limb out before I heat harden the entire stave? Could I do this while heat drying /rapid drying in the same way Thad has done in his videos? I can send a picture if it will help explain.

Hi Clay, I'm not sure how to go about it I've looked know your website to see if you have any self bows for sale ? I'm absolutely in love with the way you craft your recurves especially the snakey style osage with recurve tips.. I would attempt a build along if there was any good bow woods here.. we do have pacific yew but finding a good tree here in Nelson B.C is like finding the unicorn 🦄... they are all knotty and twisted beyond repair plus I don't have the space to season staves. Myself, wife and three little girls are all into archery now. And with the prices of meat and everything as crazy as it is I've decided to start trad hunting to provide food for the family.. long story short I'd really love to start acquiring game and would like to do it the way you do and eith one of your beautiful bows...

Let's see ya make one that goes "crack" when you shoot the fifth or sixth arrow, in silence. I had a real pretty white ash bow do just that to me and it was not ASMR. My dog ran into the woods, I assume when I was emptying my .380 into the dirt around the bow on the ground, didn't hit it once. She didn't come back until she smelled smoke and heard the Grateful Dead playing, bout and hour later.😆
