Hey Simone, super excited for you to have found a new hobby! Just a word of warning, a family member of mine got into stained glass not to long ago, and between the lead in the solder and the myriad of other chemicals and fumes that come with working in metal and glass, she suffered from some pretty rough, pretty permanent nerve and mood changes. You're a gem of a soul and I'd hate for something you love to affect you in the same way. Stay safe so you can keep making for years to come, and know we'll all be here watching

For stained glass projects, the solution for load-bearing parts (usually for hanging it) is to solder in wire, since the copper foil is thin and easily broken, and solder does little to help that under high stress. Get some thick copper wire, like from romex/house wiring, and solder that around the outside of the elements that seem to split apart. it'll help it hold together really reliably. :D

@victoriaeads6126
@victoriaeads6126 11 месяцев назад
There is a flat 'wire' we sometimes use for such things. It's more like a VERY thick tape, and is similar to the stuff Tiffany used when he developed the copper/lead soldering technique for stained glass.
@victoriaeads6126

Also, lead free solder is a bit stiffer, a little less prone to bend failure, and obviously safer for objects that will be handled regularly.

A uniquely satisfying build. Somehow, the contrast of my expectation of a utilitarian object normally associated with cold efficiency, strength, and durability against the experience of watching you construct one from fragile materials I associate with less tangible connotations of art and spirit felt particularly good. Thank you.

I think a few copper wires along the side that the crack ran at a right angle to could have been enough to reinforce that seam. That and slower motors. And like a tiny warm lightbulb somewhere inside to make it absolutely stunning in a grandma sort of way

It's so cool to see and recognize old projects still working like they was designed to do (like the dog stair chair). Some content creators make awesome things, but you never see them again, then one day you simply see the project thrown somewhere rusting, broken, etc. Then you see the video again and you can see the shortcuts taken to do then easily and fast, with no regards to keep them working for too long.

This is one of those videos that reminds me of everything I love about your videos, and why I've been watching for 8 years. Creativity, artistry, engineering, making something new not because you should or because it's needed, but making because you can and you want to, accepting challenges and making the most of failures, not being too hard on yourself when you can't achieve your perfect vision, and showing authenticity about that, not presenting as perfect and polished. Every video is a treat but some of them feel extra special, and this did for me. Thank you for doing what you do and sharing it with us

There is an actual Tiffany museum near Orlando, FL and it is amazing. It’s called the Morse Museum and it displays lamps, windows, some art, that ENTIRE CHAPLE that Tiffany & Co made for the 1893 Columbian Exposition in Chicago. It’s an incredible museum and I loved going to visit it.

We need a book of Simone's motivational quotes Also I wonder if some kind of metal brace around the outer edge of the troubled part would hold it together, instead of just the solder alone. Replacing the glass part was a good compromise though. Stained glass is cool!
@gaerekxenos
@gaerekxenos 10 месяцев назад
Yeah, a brace might have worked. Seems like it was constantly breaking along that part since there was a clear crack to break along (the solder and glass intersection) so, if the section was a solid piece of glass instead it might not have broken quite as easily. That particular part was probably a section where more pressure was applied due to the motion and rotation of everything else
