Today I'm upgrading my rural internet to Starlink and building a DIY roof mount in the process. In the video I'll talk about our rural internet experiences and show how to build a roof mount for a starlink dish. I'll go into detail of how I bend the brackets to match my roof profile, weld the structure to match the current starlink base and like always.... paint it Homesteadonomics GRAY!
Thanks for watching and please let me know if you have any questions!

Great fabrication/installation. I love the fact that what you do always looks so professional. You come across as a measure twice, cut once kind of creator. I wouldnt have thought about a drip loop or even placing it higher off the ridge to avoid high winds. I would have put the cable in a conduit to protect it from the sun and heat. So I may have a protected cable with my dish flying off the roof.

Cut the top off a pop or water bottle, cut a slit all the way thru the neck. Use a hose clamp and tighten it around the cable about 2" off the roof with some silicone sealer inside the neck area. Makes a little water shedding device to deflect rain form reaching where it goes thru the roof. You want some overlap but to much you can just cut the slit wider to remove material...

Keep in mind that the speed test does NOT imply a strong, unobstructed connection. You need to leave it on for 24 hours to allow it to analyze for obstructions. Better to leave it temporary for a week and see how many >2s obstructions are in your log. It should essentially be ZERO (unless there's a cloudy day) over a 24 hour period if you're looking for a perfect install. In terms of hot environments: You're most likely NOT going to have a problem, but the high performance dishy can handle desert just fine. It costs more but it might be only option for extreme environments. Finally, to solve your not being able to find a good wire gland: Boats are your friend! Blue Sea cable clams are what all boaters (my starlink is installed on my sailboat) use and can handle a little rain no problem! ;). 1002 might best best, or 1007 (side entry clam) for what you're doing. If you use the Starlink-side of the cable, you can buy a pretty small cable gland to get it through. The router-side plug of the cable is a bit bigger, so it's better to use the starlink-side plug when fishing through the gland. Good luck! Enjoy all your videos!
@homesteadonomics
@homesteadonomics 11 месяцев назад
Well that is some excellent info….why didn’t you read my mind before and let me know about 2 weeks ago😂 But seriously that is top notch and I’m going to look those up now! Keep it up... Love the channel

Thank you Brian! As for speed….that was about what the first couple speed tests were. But it ranges quite a lot. I’ve gotten speed tests a little bit above that and some that were about half. I’m guessing it has to do with the timing and availability of satellites or something like that. Any explanation past that is beyond my expertise level for any real knowledge of why it varies so much.

@@homesteadonomics Thanks for responding Joe. I would wonder if reaiming the antenne would increase the Mbps. To give you a (sort of) scale.. 100Mbps is the minimum for video gaming on line. I've watched videos as low as 50Mbps with some slightly lower quality and some pauses during data gathering... Also for that scale.. I get 350Mbps Down Load and 250Mbps on Up Load with Fiber connection here in Nashville.. I would think there will be faster times.. Perhaps in late night hours when the Satillite Train that is the Starlink system is overhead. It would be an interesting experiment to get real world, real time, speedtesting when the "Train" is in optimum position. I'm sure you are overjoyed with the speed you are getting vs going to the local library and uploading with WIFI.. taking 3 hrs...?.. wow.. You have a lot of patients my friend... lol But there maybe more to get from your new system. I work with land line internet connections as a side job.. As a Nashville musician one can't live off a tip jar.(lol). So, I am drawing from my Navy Electronic training and work with IT contractors in upgrading and serviceing commercial internet connections.. So, this doesn't make me an expert but I have some deeper knowledge of the connections and speeds we are able to obtain.. I'd be very curious as to how fast your set up will actually go.. I'll be getting my system for my East Tennessee cabin very soon.. Glad you brought up the subject..

Obstructions of the house. It needs a fully clear view of the sky as it moves during the day to track satellites. Now some do mount it on the ground with great success. By based on the northern aspect I need, it would have to be on the north side of my house and not close to my shop and garage. Plus I’d have to run the cable underground and then through a wall at some point. And doing it here just made more sense.

Just wondering, is the paint you used water collection safe?
@homesteadonomics
@homesteadonomics 11 месяцев назад
All paints will have something about their makeup that is toxic to some degree or another. But that is mostly when it’s wet, pre cured. And also would be more of a concern if water was stored in a container that was lined with that paint. But generally when they are fully cured they are more or less inert regarding off gassing…..especially when considering the water is slashing off it for an instant. So it’s not that much of a concern. I’m more concerned by the geoengineering programs that seed clouds than the paint on this little thing😉

Where exactly are you in southern AZ, posting from Tucson, AZ

The base wasnt necessary. The mount of the starlink has a hole in each corner. I simply used self tapping screws on the peaks. The satellite will rotate and center itself.

Trust me….I tried that😂. The pitch of the roof is steeper than the pitch of the legs. And I didn’t want to mount it at a slant. Plus I wanted the space for the reasons mentioned at the end😊👍

why not install near the living area? The "evil" rays of the satellite hit evenly on the surface of the earth, not only in the area of the antenna. And the antenna sends the "evil" rays directly in the direction of radiation to the satellite and not everywhere. In addition, the tin roof shields all "bad and good" rays coming from above as far as technically possible.

Not sure I said anything like that in the video 🤔😂 But you’re welcome to assume what you like. Now if you let me out my ‘tin foil hat’ back on and retreat to my bunker so I can answer some more comments 🤪

@@jrbailey3208 So why are you being rude to Joe?

No worries. I would point to quite a few projects that I’ve done that utilize rivets, nuts/bolts to fasten things together. Like my aluminum cornhole board project where I welded them….but also showed the alternative with angle brackets and rivets. But then again, I just may not be the channel for you. And that’s okay. I still wish you the best either way. Joe

I think this is my second or third. But I’ve been wearing this one for maybe 3 years now. The bands are interchangeable and sometimes I’ve got a leather strap and sometimes I have a nylon strap. Probably the same one as your seen before.
