As an amateur with woodworker, i typically feel overpowered with the entire arrangement ru-vid.comUgkxrYREG3-7f1Aqk9ams3ZESRNzGnfdUtyQ . Be that as it may, this arrangements drove me through with much clarity and effortlessness woodplans. Works i now work like a genius. That is great!
That’s an extremely well built door, looks great. I have to admit I would have rather you didn’t paint it and just used something like an exterior hard wax oil instead but I see why you did it. And I appreciate it, anyway the main thing is the comforting fact that there is a super solid durable wood underneath which will last decades
Love the door 👍I built a covered front porch and used clear redwood 6x6 columns.. I got the same response when I painted them.. I used redwood because it handle rot well.. love your channel no BS 👍😊
I made sapele door a few years back. Watching your video gave me a great sense of satisfaction- in that I used many of the same techniques. It was my first exterior door build. Everything i did was self taught. Some skill and a lot of luck on my end. Very brittle wood is right.Anyway. Fantastic job! Thank you.
i dont know if this will help but I had a similar problem with a matched router bit set and it turned out my router was set slightly crooked in the table. i put a 1/2" rod in the router and at a foot above the table it was 3/16" out of square. this was enough to mess up the match. after shimming to square the bits worked perfectly
AMAZING!!! I freaked out about the paint as well built then I remembered I built my kids heirloom crib using Walnut and White Oak from my family farm and painted the whole thing white too!
I was a bit sad when you painted over the Sapele (Mohogany) as it's such a pretty wood! But the customer comes first. I hope y'all have been well! Love from Florida! Marshall
Yeh, over here we use pine, and once painted white looks no different the the mahogany door painted white.... But the customer is always right, except when they are wrong
I agree with you Joey, if in the end you are satisfied with what you have made and got your time's worth, it's a job well done! We're not always entitled to do the most beautiful thing for everyone's pleasure, to each their own! Great work as always! Cheers
I'm glad you addressed the paint- my mouth literally dropped open when you broke it out. Such beautiful work hidden away. The customer gets they want, even if they're bats*** crazy... If it were to be stained and sealed would you have used the same dowels?
Looks awesome whether it's painted or natural finish. You obviously know what's underneath the paint and regardless of opinion it's an extremely well made door that I'd be happy to have at my house. Another project well done, thanks for posting.
Heavy Duty Door. Your right, it will last forever. Shame it has to be painted. I have said in the past, I just cannot get the hang of fitting hinges or hanging doors. 'Nice Saw'. Well done Joey.
Nice job, Joey! I laughed out loud the way you rolled your eyes and sarcastically commented about the Wood Whisperer clear coating his outside project. I thought the same thing and was yelling at my screen saying "No Mark, don't do it!".
Seems like the router bit would have had an easier life if u had removed the bulk of waste on the bandsaw first ?? (Tenons) Or would that have slowed the job down... & was time important ?... i.e. are u in "production mode" here ?? 🙄 Nice vid... reminds me of working with my dad in a cabinet-making shop as a 15y.o. kid... sapele was as common as muck here ( in Ireland ) back then 😂 (60y.o. now)
I love your work. I love your videos. I audibly gasped at 9:09 when that primer went on. I'm glad you explained and i truly get it, but I still shed a tiny little tear over painting that wood. :-)
I didn`t intend to use this woodworking book, *TopFineWoodworking. Com* but instead curious about it. I had been truly amazed after trying it. It never dissatisfied me in my desire to have more information about the art of wood working. I discovered several topics such as wood types as well as designing your workshop..
everybody hating on the painted door...... its funny coz if the client wants, the client gets, even tho we might think it's wrong. :l. Great video and craftmanship.
I'm a mechanic as profession and woodeorker as a hobby though I've done woodwork longer so it's like restoring a 1957 Chevy Bel Aire and then painting it neon Green.....it still hurts eveen when that's what they pay for.
its pretty fair to work with and finishes well. Sapele is for sure a great choice for any solid wood project. could have use a drawboring technique for the tenon.
Покрыл сапеле белой краской...с таким же успехом можно было делать из дешевого дерева или мдф. Тоже самое что прятать дорогой айфон в дешевом пластиковом чехле.
Me: "hmm that's some weird white glue he's putting all over that door... wow he's really lathering that thing in glue *brain accepts reality* Noooooooooo!"
Cracking build mate. When the paint first went on ouch, but totally get what you mean by having something built to last a lifetime. You never know in years to come it might get sanded back and what a beautiful surprise they will get. 👍
I said “ew” out loud when I saw you pound in hardware store grade dowels into a mahogany door. You gotta pound them in beneath the surface, and plug them with grain matched face grain plugs. EDIT: nvm it got painted. That is a true tragedy. I would’ve protested that to the bitter end.
Always enjoy watching your videos there young man. I am in the middle of making a pair of french doors for a shed i am building and your other door building videos have been an enormous help to me in that building process and design. I thank you , William. I would be happy to send you a couple of pictures I just do not know how or where to send them
I don't know why you decided to paint that kind of wood it's never done 99.99% we spray natural all the exortic lumber for its natural beauty all the same good job
Nice work - well done. I wonder if you will have to go back and 'ease' the door after the painter has his wicked way putting on a top coat finish. Chris
Its common to use a twin tenon with a hunch and wedge on the stiles head and bottom rail. Your video i enjoyed i was a shop and site joier from 1985. Many thanks Tonyjs
beautiful job on the door; i cried (only a little) at the paint, but, your reasoning is sound. and, the quality shines through. it's a gorgeous piece of workmanship. but, in my not-so-humble-opinion, it could've been gorgeouser. I think i just invented a new word.
Fantastic work as always. I wish i had the room for that k4 saw. I just delivery a few weeks ago of the k3 winner so our saws must have been ship buddies. I emailed you a while back for advice on starting out and what to get. I also got the a31 thicknesser planer and way too much festool equipment, that is a rabit hole. Cheers CJ
Awesome work as usual Joey! I've been watching all your old videos the last couple of weeks and I've been learning a lot. Thanks for taking the time and effort to document your process and share your knowledge! As a NZ (wgtn) woodworker wanting to move on from plywood and pine what hardwood(s) species would you recommend for taking the next step with? something that isn't going to break the bank when I make a mistake haha
+Further Fabrication cool man, def go for American ASH it's pretty cheap and nice to work with. Might be a bit tricky getting a small amount. Contact bbs timbers in Auckland and they will pick and ship what ever you want.
