Interesting and, as a now retired musician (guitar) I actually appreciate the background music being just that - in the background. Personally, I'm not much into wood colored with epoxy; whether its saw or chisel handles, table tops, etc. However using it (or super glue depending on the size of the repair) mixed with fine sawdust (preferably from the same material) works great for filling gaps, holes, minor dings, etc.. (I was also the guitar doctor at Stars Guitars in San Francisco, CA. & yes, I used to make house calls to concerts, recording studios & even homes.) Keep at it.

those turned out really nice, I got a bunch of patterns for handles and totes and was going to start playing around with them... think I have some oak, I'm apparently not blessed by the walnut fairy or I would just get a scrap piece of walnut that is conveniently in arms reach and use that.

Beautiful! I might have to try this someday -- especially since most tools are sized for men's hands, so they're generally quite big for me :P

if it's just printer paper, you can make it more clear by soaking it in baby oil/mineral oil. We used that to make "films" for exposing screenprinting screens.

Paul Sellers and others use a file/rasp from Japan that looks like a bunch of saw blades ganged together. It appears able to do heavy or light rasping quickly and with remarkably clean results. I have watched you using a lot of different rasps and wondered why you haven't chosen to get one of these for those heavy jobs. I know you NEED the smaller rasps for tight places and fine details but a lot of sweat equity is going to the roughing in of forms. The rasp that Paul uses appears a very reasonably efficient one to use. Admittedly it would be clumsy and too large to use on a lot of small stuff but so many times I've cringed to see you spend a lot of time just roughing out a shape. I believe its called a Shinto saw rasp.

Shinto rasps are great on flat surfaces and large convex surfaces but I find them to be a pain on any other organic shape. Also I find them to cut a bit slower then a good hand stiched rasp. But in the end it is just personal preference.

What was the point of going through all that work without having slotted for the plate or cut in the mortise for the back? Gonna be a heart breaker when you gooch one up after all that time put in
@WoodByWright
@WoodByWright 2 года назад
Generally, if there's going to be a problems, it's going to happen in the shaping. I've never had much problem with cutting the slot for the back or plate. I like to get them right to about this stage. They still need about an hour to 2 hours each of fine detailing and cleaning. I talk about that a lot more in the how-to version. These are just rough shaped at this point. Applying the blo makes all the small imperfections far more visible. So you can. Go. Back later. And file them all into shape.
@Thomas_Crowfoot
@Thomas_Crowfoot 2 года назад
@@WoodByWright that hasn't been my experience I guess. I was taught,and have experienced that the slotting and morticing is where things tend to go sideways, if they're going to go sideways. The shaping, for me, is the meditative part. Except for lambs tongues. Those stress me out still haha
@WoodByWright
@WoodByWright 2 года назад
I guess it comes down to how confident you are with cutting to a line. I like to have the solid head to clamp in the vice rather then the split head or messing with filling the slot to then clamp it for filing. I guess it is a pick your poison problem.

Love your woodworking. But your epoxy skills stink! No gloves. No metering pumps. No weighing. That's a recipe for failure.
