Making A Sculptural Carving [19]

I needed to carve a sculpture out of wood for my school art project so here it is - i used a jigsaw to create the rough forms, then chisels to make each form flow into each other and sanding to final things up. The wood is reclaimed from a skip.
I use a different editing style so would love to know what you all thought! Music is by Dooley Wilson, songs Gwyne Over the Hill & When I Was Young
Hope everybody had a good new year, thanks for watching and as always leave a comment below if you have any criticism or feedback!

To add some context - The school art project was on 'embrace' - i took some photos of people hugging and there drew abstracted forms based upon those photos, this was one of the drawings in sculpture (162)

He was just scratching the surface of what that particular jigsaw can do. I have the same model and I use it also for cutting metals and plastics. Wood is more fun though for the jigsaw.

Awesome job! You gotta song list for this video? I can’t find the exact versions you’ve included, only originals and I need them :p

Watched this a few times and I am fascinated. I would like to attempt something similar. My own style of coarse. You are a little overdressed for woodworking but quite skilled with the jigsaw.

Thanks a lot mate! I filmed this after school, so i'm still in uniform which is why I look overdressed. You should definitely attempt something, and try using a jigsaw, imo its one of the most versatile tools in the shop:)

JMakes Oh it is. I have a Bosch variable speed jigsaw much like the one you have. I started out using the jigsaw on steel and aluminum! I got into using it on wood by printing large numbers and letters from Microsoft Word. Made MDF templates first and double taped them to my wood of my choosing and followed with scrolling blades. Works like a champ. A quick touch up with a trim bit on a small router and it is so smooth.

Great work, especially considering the tools you had to work with. The chisel used, an in-cannel type, is a carpentry tool mostly used for routing straight lines. If you got a woodcarving chisel with the bevel on the outside, and perhaps one that is a little less meaty, I think you'd find it a lot easier to cut curves. But you did great considering your wood - pine - which is not at all a great wood for carving. It's soft, but does not take detail. I think you'll find basswood a lot easier to work with. I hope you got an 'A'. Keep carving!

Thanks Noor! Really, really helpful information!! I definitely did find the chisels hard to use - didn't produce very clean shavings - so i'll have a look into finding some proper carving chisels with external bevels and good tips on the wood too, I was only using what I had on hand at the time but will definitely look into getting some nicer woods. Thanks!

Well, my best carving tools come from your neck of the woods, not that many miles away (Sheffield): Addis, Ashley Iles, Sorby, Henry Taylor, Buck, Herring Bros., et. al. Much nicer that the tools now made in the US: Sculpture House, Flexcut. But having the best tools won't help much if you don't learn to sharpen them properly. That took me a while to learn. But an old, well-made, well-sharpened tool is such a pleasure to use. And they don't fill your lungs with sawdust or damage your nerves or hearing like some power tools might. So I use the old hand tools whenever feasible. You get pretty handy with them after a while, so the rotary carving tools don't really save you that much time.

This is not really carving in the usual sense, of course, and I think you will find this method very restricting and potentially dangerous. People respect artistic talent and craftsmanship. That's why no-one is much impressed by a piece of art turned out by a machine, and this applies to a lesser extent to something made using too much machinery. It removes your personality from the finished item. My suggestions, if you want to improve on this, are: 1/ learn how to sharpen gouges and chisels until they have a mirror finish, 2/ See what you can do to master traditional carving skills. (It will take years, so the sooner you start, the better.) 3/ If you must put music with your videos, chose something very bland and keep the volume very low. You obviously like this 'music' and others will, also. But many, like myself, can't stand it, and the point of making your video (and your carving) is that others will see it and be attracted to it. Good luck!

I think this is a long way from being 'turned out by a machine' - that would be clicking a button on a CNC. I tried to use both machine and hand processes here - the tools were for the really rough shaping, whereas the majority of the time spent on this piece was carving and sanding (i carved the whole back side (machine free) and did a lot of chiselling off camera). I've used machines to make the piece, but so do the majority of people nowadays, its just a different way of doing things; the skill required is not less just different. Thanks for the feedback!

The art isn't in the production. It lies in the vision. Great vision, great video! You could have made this with a chain saw but nothing takes away from the abstract form of people hugging represented by the wood. Brilliant. Just because it didn't take you 4 years with nothing but your fingernails, or stone tools you made from flint and then forged in a pottery foundry you dragged the bottom of a lake to acquire the mud metals, doesn't take anything away from how you saw this piece. Well done, Sir. +1000 on the blues as well!
