Here I run through how I make a basic and completely natural bait for use throughout 2024. I set out to create a bait that was fairly soft that would breakdown fairly quickly in order to let off the food signals to help draw the carp towards it. I had the idea that because carp are reared on fish pellets I would build a base mix of 2 types of fishmeal with a fairly low amount of binder, I also added no extra oil due to the high fat content of the soya flour. This mix turned out to be very stiff but manageable and actually rolled out really easily. After boiling, I air dried them for approx 17hrs, just enough for them to form a skin but still be fairly soft on the inside.

You have inspired me to start making my own bait after a couple years of not being motivated. Living in the USA there is no where near as many options to buy good bait. Stuff from main brands that the few carp stores do sell tends to be past its best. Home rolled is best 😊

Thank you for the kind words. I'm sure you'll enjoy making your own bait once you source the ingredients. It can be quite addictive when the captures start coming. Tight lines Steve

Hi pal. Yea I got to the stage where rolling boilies was such a hassle, even doing a couple of a kilo was getting to the point where I didn't enjoy it. This is when I decided to make it a bit easier by getting the mixer, extruder etc. I then started to enjoy making boilies again. Steaming is the way pal 👌🏻 Thanks for the kind feedback. Cheers pal, as far as consistency goes they seem to have turned out well. The ingredients add up to a great boilie but time will tell. Tight lines Steve

Hi I love the video 😊 I’m doing my own Boilie making is it right that semolina and soya are the main binders in a base mix there’s not much videos on here how to make a good basic home Boilie i’ve been trying all different ways sometimes they’re too sticky or I’ve dried out too quick.

I'd imagine there are a lot of bait companies using semolina and soy flour as the main binder albeit fairly discreetly as there's a stigma associated with it as they're seen as cheap filler- bulking ingredients. Used in moderation I don't see anything wrong with the practice. Like most things in life, it's all about moderation. Tight lines Steve

I'm new to this. I'm finding anything with soya/semolina smells the same when I break one open. Is this the case with all 'basic' 50/50 mixes? If I don't want to make a fishy bait (wife proof), what would you use to replace those ingredients?
@BivvyLife
@BivvyLife Месяц назад
When you say basic 50-50 mixes I'm assuming you're referencing unflavoured in which case yes most will smell similar as they're farinaceous so highly starchy and mealy. If you want a basic natural bait you could replace the fishmeal with ground seed and powdered milk. Try Nectarblend or ptx from quality baits near Birmingham. Also a 50-50 could be made up of alternatives such as maize flour and clo. Hope this helps Tight lines Steve

Have you tried adding Salmon or crab meat to mix
@BivvyLife
@BivvyLife 5 месяцев назад
No pal I've deliberately kept this mix very basic for experimental purposes over this coming season but yes that would be a great addition to the mix although fairly expensive if any beneficial quantity is added. Tight lines Steve

What does it work out cost wise per kg mate?
@BivvyLife
@BivvyLife 4 месяца назад
I'm not sure of the latest cost as the ingredients have increased significantly recently. The last time I priced a similar bait it was £4.25 per kilo. A rough guesstimate this latest batch would be closer to £5.50 per kilo.

Why not put the eggshells in…..you could liquidise them first ??

Hi mate. It's a good point and there are people that still use that method, I tried it for a few years but didn't find it helped at all. Thanks for commenting. Tight lines Steve

@@BivvyLife : Think you’re right ….it doesn’t catch more fish but I think it is a source of calcium and minerals which is probably beneficial to the fishes’ health so you wouldn’t notice an increase in catch rate. Also I think it possibly is an aid to digestion ( think birds…..they consume grit for digestion). Thanks for your reply and tight lines. 🎣
