Nice tutorial video. I liked your angle iron jig to do the octagonal grinds accurately. The smal hole wth the bigger hole behind makes it easy to do the slot in the Bufalo horn for the tang with good fit.

Fantastic video. May I ask what’s the product you soaked the wood into before use the shellac? I could not read what it is. For the carnauba. You use a block you melt by friction on the buffing wheel right?

Very detailed video on wa handle making. Great job and the final outcome looks perfect. I have a few Japanese knives with the exact same pattern as the wa handle you made. Are the Yoshihiro brand handles made the same way? Seems like a lot of work goes into the handle crafting as well as the blade.

In no way shape or form am I criticizing you for that fantastic handle.. But isn't beech usually considered a hardwood? I am super impressed with your technique, but I am baffled that you can do a burn-in with beech.
@aikabacrafttools9129
@aikabacrafttools9129 5 лет назад
Yes, you are right beech is fairly hard, but way softer than exotic woods. I didn't find any other softer wood in rods that's why I used that, but a perfect wood would be the traditional japanese magnolia wood or maybe alder as an european and american substitute.

amazing, gorgeous, beautiful. i am completely confounded as to how hitting the back of the handle with a mallet made the tang go into it? it looked like you were only holding the handle itself, how is that possible??
@aikabacrafttools9129
@aikabacrafttools9129 2 года назад
Thank you! haha it's the third law of Newton, action and reaction, If an object "A" exerts a force on object "B", then object "B" must exert a force of equal magnitude and opposite direction back on object "A". So... when I hit the handle with the mallet the handle itself exerts a force on the blade and the blade exert an equal force back to the handle, and that's why it goes in.

I didn't understand what you did at 10:01, how is it possible to hit the handle's back with a round "hammer" with anything supporting the blade and the blade's tang "magically" gets into the handle against the gravity force???? 😮😮😮 Can you explain better what happened and what are that hammer made of??? 😮😮😮Anyways, I'm amazed!!! Your job is stunning 💝💝💝
@aikabacrafttools9129
@aikabacrafttools9129 4 года назад
Thank you! glad you liked the video. About the tang getting into the handle hammering the handle's back, well... I suppose it can be explained by the third law of newton, "When one body exerts a force on a second body, the second body simultaneously exerts a force equal in magnitude and opposite in direction on the first body". So, when you hit the handle with the hammer, it creates a force in the direction of the blade and the blade reacts simultaneously with another force but in the directión of the handle, that way the tang is pushed into the handle. Hope I make any sense. Also I have a video where I show how to make this hammer or maul: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8DEIgDbS3Uc.html.

From the few knives I have seen that the beauty of the handle overshadows the blade. Why not attach the blade to the handle by injecting epoxy glue? Beautiful grip, beautiful video, great help. Thanks.
@aikabacrafttools9129
@aikabacrafttools9129 2 года назад
Thank you! I actually use epoxy on most blades, but with this method you can easily get the handle of the blade in case you need to repolish it again comfortably and without damaging the handle, it's especially interesting in stone polished blades.

Sure, the measurements are: 140 mm long, 20x22 mm (width and height respectively) in the front and 22x24 mm in the end of the handle. Well, those are the finished handle measurements, so maybe you should let 0.5mm more or so before hand sanding and polishing.

It really works great for this things. This mix is made by myself and would love to give you the exact proportions but unfortunately I tried different mixes and forgot about this one. Anyway it's a mix of lindseed oil and beewax and I think around 50/50 of each one, put them in an old cooking pot with low heat or even in a water bath (because hot linseed oil can get on fire) and stir until both are well mixed. If the mix is too hard once it's cool you can always warm up again and ad more oil until the texture is right for you.

Just have a few questions as I am making my own gyuto handles What thickness of silver have you used? What size drill bits have you used ? What is the name of the glue you used ? If I don't have a buffer machine can I do it by hand with a buffer cloth ?
@aikabacrafttools9129
@aikabacrafttools9129 4 года назад
Thank you for that kind words! The silver is about 3mm thick. The big drill bit was 10mm in this case but, it should be the closest to the size of your knife tang. The small bit was 2mm if I remember correctly, It should be the same size or thiner as the thicknes of your blade in the start. The glue is Araldite epoxy, the brand is Ceys, in this case is 1 hour epoxy. It's dificult to achive that shine by hand, but you can use a buffing wheel attached to a drill, it's cheap and works well. I've used that until a year ago or so (about minute 12:10): ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-pPIZwD8Tu1Y.html Hope that helps you, good luck with your handles.

The angle jig tool is great. Also the split pin/ blade holder inside the handle. Smart.

Knife looks like honyaki...which knife is this?
@aikabacrafttools9129
@aikabacrafttools9129 5 лет назад
It's a 8" gyuto, similar to the petty (with a hamon too), but with a modern polishing rather than a tradicional one.

Hi there! I have a question to ask. Is the hole for the handle centred or slightly off centre? Thank you:)
@aikabacrafttools9129
@aikabacrafttools9129 5 лет назад
The blade is centered in the handle, but the white point that grows in the midle of the horn is off center in the hadle so it seems that the rest is also off center. I don't know if that make sense haha.

what finish does he use on his handle, also what should i use to get a semi gloss finish?
@aikabacrafttools9129
@aikabacrafttools9129 4 года назад
I use linseed oil and then shellac, after polishing with wax you get a good gloss finish. If you want a more durable finish you can also use a mix of equal parts of oil, varnish and mineral spirits.
