Just a tip that you or others might not know, if you put painters tape on the back of your sandpaper it prevents the sandpaper from splitting as you do the shoeshine method. Awesome technique, and great job on the knife.
⭕️out of the videos of yours i have watched so far ... this one has been one I’ll commit to memory. The blade description was well said and the handle was as well. the finer details for what most of us are looking for that isn’t covered by most knife makers on this platform. Thank you for your time and effort that you put into the video, to share your skill. As far as the dagger goes... Badassery!
Subbed not to long ago. Beginner knife maker. (Haven’t made one yet). I like to watch many videos before doing something. Great video. Look forward to my first knife.
Gracias genio!!! Gracias por mostrar que se puede realizar un bonito trabajo con herramientas básicas.. excelente.. incentiva a crear día a día. Saludos
Hey put duct tape on your sandpaper when you’re doing the shoeshine method on your handles. That’ll strengthen it and keep your sandpaper from tearing. Beautiful work, and God Bless.
I subbed, I love your wisdom, I wish I could trade my drywall wisdom for metal magic, I’ve been injured trying to absorb, definitely one day I’m going to purchase something.
Really enjoy watching you work. Started to make my first leather sheat, got inspired by your how to make a leather sheat video. Watch a ton of your videos now. And I'll sub for sure! Recently completed my third knife that's going to a friend of mine. He wanted a hunting knife so I made one with my personal touch =) would love to show it off but couldn't comment with a picture. Keep up The good work! And thanks for The inspiration!
Apart from doing pilot holes, if you are set on using hand tools and want to maintain a straight, 90° hole... take a block of wood that is at least 1" thick. Measure it with a set square and cut a corner out of it, keeping your cut true to 90°. Clamp it where you plan to drill, and you have a makeshift guide to see if your drill angle starts to wander.
I subbed, I want to make a long double edged sword and a dagger, but I cant buy any machinery other than the angle grinder, I ordered a "BOSCH GWS 600 professional" from amazon and some basic tools, some of the tricks you showed in the video are really helpful, i believe the knife won't be a problem but a sword is kind of difficult to make without a belt sander. I really wanted to make a guard for the sword but that would need drills, so I decided to make the guard of wood, thanks for your insights, and I hope you keep making videos in which not much tools are needed.
Good work, Aaron! I am glad you are picking up sponsors - Empire Abrasives? That should be a good partnership. I hope you both make a million bucks. Keep the vids coming!
Hi, I enjoyed this video. I have knifemaking tools and I build knives in my garage. But I live in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and I am moving 3,000 miles to Seattle, Washington. I am getting older now and I know at least for a couple of years I will be living in a condo with no garage. So watching your video I realized I can continue my knifemaking quietly in the extra bedroom. I have two Paragon heat treating ovens, belt grinders, etc., etc. I'll put the equipment in storage for a time. Decide later if it is worth the expense to move it. Thanks for the video. I know I can make knives Quietly.
I'm in a similar situation. I don't have a shop of my own anymore. A relative lets me keep some tools at his house, but it's kind of a pain driving back and forth across town to do different steps when I'm making knives.
@@philochristos Thanks for your comment. I will be more than OK. I am leaving Myrtle Beach, SC going to Seattle, WA. I am marrying the Beauty Queen winner from my High School in Virginia. I met her when I was 16. She took my breath away. Life happens and we did not see each other for over 5 decades and then. I never believed in miracles and magic before but I do now. Life is good.
I subbed. Love the work you do. So far I am learning a lot from you. I have just started making my first 5 knives. Your videos is what I’m using to keep me on point in my processes. Ty keep up the great work. Jr. dahlonega GA.
I wanted the hamon to pop on this one so rapid quench in water helps the steel transition faster! But quickly to the oil to not quench too fast. This is elm burl
Did you skip a step? I didn't see you doing any filing or grinding on the bevels after heat treat. I was curious about that part because even a tempered blade is pretty hard. Do you continue with the same file method? I assume you hand sanded the blade. Did you use the same jig to do your sanding or did you free hand it? If you free hand it, did you find it difficult to keep that crisp grind line?
Actually since I was doing this knife 100% by hand I took the knife to a finish sanding grit before I heat treated it that way after heat treat all I had to do is clean it up with sandpaper also doing the clay temper the clay protects the knife in the area that it's covering so the only area that has carburization on it would be the edge where the Hamon shows up
@@Aleeknives But you said in the video that you keep the edge at the thickness of a nickel before heat treat. Is that how thick you take your edge before sharpening it?
This knife I worked theedge closer to finish thickness before heat treat. It was actuallya little thinner than a dime. I just watched the video again and I did loose some footage in there about right after the temper cycle. I didn't show finish sanding and etching the blade and went right into making the handle. Good eye Sam!
@@Aleeknives wellcome Airin we all appreciate your effort in making these videos and your readiness to pass on your knowledge All the best in your future work!
Awesome video. Beginner knife maker and I have learned a lot from watching your videos. Haven’t made my first blade yet (just been putting handles on knife blanks), but getting ready to do my first blade. A few questions if you don’t mind, after heat treating, what did you do to get the blade to the final stage of creating the edge and sharpening? Did you hand sand to remove the scale from heat treating? Also, I know this may sound like a dumb one, but what type of file did you use for the beveling? Thanks for your videos and sharing of knowledge. You provide great detail into the processes that many other channels leave out. I subscribed.
That is exciting to start on your first blade! I got pretty close to finish thickness before heat treating this one. I also used the clay on the ridge for the differentially heat treated effect. So there wasn't much scale to sand off afterwards. I used a flat battery file from harbor freight on this one
Do you mostly heat treat with your HT oven or with your forge? I am looking at building an oven since I am just doing stock removal right now, not forging. Awesome video btw!
I am incredibly amused that you think a simple two-part jig that's been used for 100 years was created by Gough! I do love his work but come on let's be honest
I loved that, Airin. One of my most favourite videos to date as it was engaging and informative. Thanks mate. I'm guessing you made the video some while ago, given the temperature in the Sunflower State? Minus 19!!?? The candy bars kept you going, too. Do you have much left of the English candy I sent? I bet it's all gone now!! 🤣😎 Great job, brother. Super super well done!! 🤜💥🤛
I still have several bars awaiting a new project!😉 I only break into them on special occasions! I really enjoyed that package! Literally the coolest thing anyone has ever done for me! Cheers Pete. I hope everything is going well over there. Things here in the states are continuing to get crazy.
@@Aleeknives You’re so welcome, buddy. Hope you enjoy them. It was my way of showing my appreciation for your work. Going okay over here. We’re pretty much back to normal now, so hopefully we are out of the covid woods soon. I’m halfway through a two week break, and next week I intend to get knife 4 done. I’ll keep you posted with the pictures of my progress. Hope you are all keeping safe. I see the US News a lot; I can only hope that it doesn’t get any worse for you guys. Governments are becoming crazy everywhere!! 🤜🏻💥🤛🏻
@@Aleeknives i thought it was a coppa thing. Im glad video wasn't taken down. Great video and i love your choice of handle/bolster material, really complimented eachother.
@@Aleeknives have you ever made a video on deer antler? I have a buddy who has a nice little full tanged Damascus knife with deer antler handle scales and one broke. He wants me to fix it and I'd love to,,,,,but I've never messed with that stuff
I subbed!!! Love your videos!! I’m just starting to get into making knives and I’ve learned so much from you already just from watching! My shop is finally together and I’m waiting on some materials so I can get working on my very first knife! I have a question and it’s a dumb one but I just don’t know much about files so, my question is what kind of files do I want to use? Especially when it comes to the hand grinding the bevels and filing the handle to the grind to lines??? Other than that I love the videos and I’m a sub now lol!! Thanks if you can answer my questions!
I bought lots of different styles to test. The harbor freight files work fine but they will eventually lose teeth. The more expensive Nicholson files give a finer cut with less clean up work afterwards. Basically any files will work. Best files are old stock 1975 or earlier before they went to using the new powdered steels
@@Aleeknives ok cool thank you for the response. Yes my grandfather left me all of his tools in his barn and I literally have 50-75 old old Nicholson files and some w no names on it but, my main thing is what ones to use for blade work and what ones to use for handle work? Some have bigger deeper teeth and some are very fine so I just wasn’t sure if I can use whatever whenever or if I start a certain way?? Ect…
Excellent knife. Outstanding video. I’ve learned a ton watching your videos. So now, I have family members that want knifes for the holidays. So I got some stainless steel blanks from eBay and will make some scales for them. After the holidays I’m going to pickup a forge from Amazon. Then pick up some bar stock and go to the next level. What’s your experience and take on using stainless steel. Anyways I’m looking forward to your next project.
@@Aleeknives Ok. I get it, that’s why you don’t see stainless steel knife making on RU-vid . I’ll do the scales only for the SS knifes. I can’t even get my wife to clean up the steel knifes right after she’s used it. It goes right into the dishwasher or the sink. It’s probably a secret ploy she has for me to dice up onions with the knifes that I’ve made. Because I clean it right after I use it. Anyways love your videos. You are a Jedi Master for us out there in RU-vid land.
I am always trying new things. I had seen other makers doing it this way and wanted to see if there was any advantage. I didn't see any advantage over making one peice scales and then applying them
@@Aleeknives ahh that now makes sense. I think if I tried it my nerves would be all over the place, will stick to what I know. Thanks for your reply man, love your work👍
Dude those curved plunge lines meeting the ricasso being so symmetric..... Holy #$&*. That is beyond crispy. Loved the profile. Not a fan of those handle colors. Though I am going to try that "mothers" finish.....how well does it work on purple heart wood? What finish would you recommend for Purpleheart Handled kitchen knives?
Thank you I appreciate that! I use a lot of different color handle woods and things like that and handles sometimes it floats people's boats and sometimes it doesn't. Purple Heart would be great with Mother's polishing compound and I would probably finish it off with a tongue oil finish
I subbed btw but wanted to comment I use that method for bevels and it works great but by golly it takes forever lol but looks great once you drawl file it all clean
@@Aleeknives awesome I will add it to the cart! Do you trust the hand scales from Amazon also? I wanna make my own eventually but would like to start making a few knives first... also thanks for all the videos you make I just started watching them the other day and definitely getting alot of much needed info
@@Aleeknives Thank you 🙏 for your reply, and I’m hoping you have the time to make another dagger 🗡 like this one ☝️, and I will be happy to buy it from you brother
I subbed! If I ship you a knife I crafted, would you test it and give me feedback. Much appreciated, and this video gave me SO MANY insights. Thank you, and keep up the good work. Cheers,
Dragging a file back and forth like that will prematurely dull the file. A file will only remove material during your push stroke. Just a piece of advice, especially for someone starting off on a budget. Don't wear your tools out due to misuse and save yourself some money in the long run.
I got bored at work the other night and decided to make a knife with similar tools as you did in this video. It’s hideously bad and made out of angle iron so it’s not a real knife. But I would love to send it to you so you could remake it with actually steel and make it actually look better 😂
Im like quit talking and just do the damn job hoping to see him finish then he cuts it out the part i wanna see and hes all of a sudden he's done and still talking. Its like like he thinks were dumb ive seen what hes doing a million times. You dont have to explain everything your doing it gets annoying and cringy. Everything hes doing ive seen already.
Thank you! I am glad your an experienced knife maker a million times over. My channel is aimed at the guy just getting into making knives and those people really appreciate the Information. Cheers
Okay I'm sorry but you should never drag a file in both directions or you will prematurely wear the teeth flat and render it useless or dull... You should only ever file in one direction either a push or a pull Agatha teeth of the file and do not leave the file touching the material when you draw it back to make another pass.... Just a little constructive criticism or a tip from someone who has ruined many a file before learning how to properly use one lol give it a try and let me know how you make out 👌🗡⚔👍
