Just a tip that you or others might not know, if you put painters tape on the back of your sandpaper it prevents the sandpaper from splitting as you do the shoeshine method. Awesome technique, and great job on the knife.

The blade description was well said and the handle was as well. the finer details for what most of us are looking for that isn’t covered by most knife makers on this platform. Apart from doing pilot holes, if you are set on using hand tools and want to maintain a straight, 90° hole... take a block of wood that is at least 1" thick. Measure it with a set square and cut a corner out of it, keeping your cut true to 90°. Clamp it where you plan to drill, and you have a makeshift guide to see if your drill angle starts to wander.

I subbed, I want to make a long double edged sword and a dagger, but I cant buy any machinery other than the angle grinder, I ordered a "BOSCH GWS 600 professional" from amazon and some basic tools, some of the tricks you showed in the video are really helpful, i believe the knife won't be a problem but a sword is kind of difficult to make without a belt sander. I really wanted to make a guard for the sword but that would need drills, so I decided to make the guard of wood, thanks for your insights, and I hope you keep making videos in which not much tools are needed.

Hi, I enjoyed this video. I have knifemaking tools and I build knives in my garage. But I live in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and I am moving 3,000 miles to Seattle, Washington. I am getting older now and I know at least for a couple of years I will be living in a condo with no garage. So watching your video I realized I can continue my knifemaking quietly in the extra bedroom. I have two Paragon heat treating ovens, belt grinders, etc., etc. I'll put the equipment in storage for a time. Decide later if it is worth the expense to move it. Thanks for the video. I know I can make knives Quietly.

Did you skip a step? I didn't see you doing any filing or grinding on the bevels after heat treat. I was curious about that part because even a tempered blade is pretty hard. Do you continue with the same file method? I assume you hand sanded the blade. Did you use the same jig to do your sanding or did you free hand it? If you free hand it, did you find it difficult to keep that crisp grind line?
@Aleeknives
@Aleeknives 3 года назад
Actually since I was doing this knife 100% by hand I took the knife to a finish sanding grit before I heat treated it that way after heat treat all I had to do is clean it up with sandpaper also doing the clay temper the clay protects the knife in the area that it's covering so the only area that has carburization on it would be the edge where the Hamon shows up
@philochristos
@philochristos 3 года назад
@@Aleeknives But you said in the video that you keep the edge at the thickness of a nickel before heat treat. Is that how thick you take your edge before sharpening it?
@Aleeknives
@Aleeknives 3 года назад
This knife I worked theedge closer to finish thickness before heat treat. It was actuallya little thinner than a dime. I just watched the video again and I did loose some footage in there about right after the temper cycle. I didn't show finish sanding and etching the blade and went right into making the handle. Awesome video. Beginner knife maker and I have learned a lot from watching your videos. Haven’t made my first blade yet (just been putting handles on knife blanks), but getting ready to do my first blade. A few questions if you don’t mind, after heat treating, what did you do to get the blade to the final stage of creating the edge and sharpening? Did you hand sand to remove the scale from heat treating? Also, I know this may sound like a dumb one, but what type of file did you use for the beveling? Thanks for your videos and sharing of knowledge. You provide great detail into the processes that many other channels leave out. I subscribed.
@Aleeknives
@Aleeknives 3 года назад
That is exciting to start on your first blade! I got pretty close to finish thickness before heat treating this one. I also used the clay on the ridge for the differentially heat treated effect. So there wasn't much scale to sand off afterwards. I used a flat battery file from harbor freight on this one

I bought lots of different styles to test. The harbor freight files work fine but they will eventually lose teeth. The more expensive Nicholson files give a finer cut with less clean up work afterwards. Basically any files will work. Best files are old stock 1975 or earlier before they went to using the new powdered steels

Dragging a file back and forth like that will prematurely dull the file. A file will only remove material during your push stroke. Just a piece of advice, especially for someone starting off on a budget. Don't wear your tools out due to misuse and save yourself some money in the long run.

Totally agree I meant to bring attention to the fact that I was only adding pressure on the push stroke.

I got bored at work the other night and decided to make a knife with similar tools as you did in this video. It’s hideously bad and made out of angle iron so it’s not a real knife. But I would love to send it to you so you could remake it with actually steel and make it actually look better 😂

Okay I'm sorry but you should never drag a file in both directions or you will prematurely wear the teeth flat and render it useless or dull... You should only ever file in one direction either a push or a pull Agatha teeth of the file and do not leave the file touching the material when you draw it back to make another pass.... Just a little constructive criticism or a tip from someone who has ruined many a file before learning how to properly use one lol give it a try and let me know how you make out 👌🗡⚔👍
