Cool board i like that. I. Making my 8th board. & each time i learn something different & new. I only have done epoxy. With a full carbon rail around. I'm now doing 4 ounce glass, double top n bottom for strength. My boards are super lite & performance for me has been good. I have also struggled getting length & volume correctness. My boards were 5.4. About 30 liters (just too short). My hight 5.3 wegight 80kgs. I. Now going 5.8. & 32 liters. Now they work well. Oh, I'm about to glass my take on a big wave ghost style board for J-bay super tubes. I live about 60ks from J-bay. South africa. Awesome video. Keep up the posts.
This board is similar to what you’ve made me in the past. It is my favorite board out of every board I’ve ever surfer. Love the speed, drive, and float!
that is an awesome idea to sand the laps down while the tape is still on! dont have to worry as much about gouges, and will cut just the same with the blade once its sanded thin enough. Thanks! The new sander could be useful for rails and for higher grit or delicate / finishing sanding
Nice board and the forest green is a very nice touch. I found your channel in the journey of making my own board, cool video, keep it up...by the way, I am 22 and I had some back issues in the past, but swimming at sea in winter has definitely improved my problem, cold water in general reduced the inflammation in my lower back.
You’re a wild man for swimming in the ocean in the winter! Glad your back is better, I do cold plunges sometimes, I don’t know if it helps my back pain but it’s cool to hear it can.
@@soulesperanzadude I thought the same thing. Doctors told me I would never be able to surf like this again. I found that physical therapy and decreasing my stress is what helped the most.
hey man sick video i like the explenation and background on the shape a lot. But microballoons or Qcel will give discoloration as well. best option is to route out a small area where the damage is located and fill it with a piece of foam u have leftover from cutting the outline and glue it in the routed area with some epoxy. Cant wait for the next vid yezz
Cool looking board. I reckon if you're using epoxy then you may as well use a polystyrene blank. Make your own blank, much cheaper, more satisfying. Use more glass than a PU blank so it's not too light and is nice and strong. That's my 10c.
@@BeardSurfCreations Most people cut the rocker out of a polystyrene block with a hot-wire. Pretty simple once you're set up. I like to glue a timber stringer in. A block of polystyrene big enough for a surfboard is about $40 where I am (as opposed to $200 for a PU blank) I use 24kg/M3 density foam. 2X6oz deck and 2X4oz bottom glassing schedule. The stuff is a bit of a pain in the ass to shape but you get used to it. What you end up with is a much stronger board for the same weight.
That Festool sander is the best! There are 2. They come in two orbital strokes. A 3mm which is slow but leave less swirls and is good for rails. They also have a 5mm throw which is really aggressive. I rarely speed it up past 2. I've got both. Da Bes Brah!
Dude I put that think on 80 grit and it was taking forever! I agree it’s a great sander but I just couldn’t wait that long to get my sanding done. I wish that wasn’t the case because it’s really nice to have a sander with the vacuum attachment
Great video ! This is a basic question - but what do you use when taping off your rails ? I have built a few eps boards , and all the tapes I have tried seem to adhere poorly to the foam during lamination. Thanks !
Thanks for the question! I actually prefer the cheaper tape for lam. The only reason I would get better tape is if you want to do a resin tint on the lam and need to stop any bleeding. But you can always do that on a hot coat instead too. I just typically use a cheap blue scotch tape tho. Hope that helps
I hand shaped it so there’s not a great way to measure the volume. My guess would be around 30L. More volume does make it less responsive but you can be strategic and not put too much in the nose which helps keep less noticeable
Great vid board looks fun brother Maybe if i stopped drinking the beers i could surf a 5’8” again hahaha Whats your finishing schedule there? Glossy! And what epoxy do you use?
It’s not just length it’s volume too haha. Not sure what you mean about finishing schedule but I use green room board co’s resin. I had a few people tell me it’s been reliable for them and seems to work pretty well for me.
Yes, both will show. Microballoons will work a bitttt better but its al in the proper technique and slurry thickness. you want to JUST fill the holes, nothing else. Then : DONT USE TRANSLUCENT TINTS!! just get pigments and use enough of it so the stringer just shows through but it kinda covers up the slurry bits.. or, get a superfused eps blank that needs no spackle..
Ya I was struggling to explain this ha. There is some resin pooling on the deck of the board. You can see an extra dark green strip. it’s where the bottom lam comes around to the deck side of the board. And then the color lam goes over it and pools resin at the edge of the bottom lam and it’s more visible than it should be.
I think helping my body fix the issue was key. Mine was overuse on an imbalanced core. My back was overcompensating for a weak/tight core. I did some PT to help get it unstuck and then balance my core strength. And then diet and regular exercise were key to getting back to 95% for me. My discs are blown out so I don’t think 100% is realistic unless I do stem cell therapy or something. Hope that helps
