I have looked through one of Pete's telescopes at the moon and also at Saturn - you could see the rings. It's even more impressive in real life! Truly awesome bit of kit, and a great video about how they are made. Thanks Pete! x
@@xaniac2429 I met this asshole in the Philippines who claimed he could see the footprints with binoculars. Wish I could see the footprints with one of the four pairs of binocs I have or even my 8" telescope!
@Demo Ha! That's a good one. This guy actually taught engineering in Japan, he was one of those guys that never shuts his ass, is always right and gets near to violence if you dispute what he said. He was dying of prostate cancer, had lived (he told me) about 20 KM from Fukushima. I asked him if living near Fuku had contributed to his cancer and he told me 'no'. I didn't say anything but I just remembered who I was talking to and thot he was full of shit or very stupid. Later, after he died in January of 2019, a mutual friend told me that the fellow had confided in our mutual friend that he thot it was indeed due to living near Fuku. Des;pite this guy's assholiness, he had some interesting things to tell ;and if it was engineering related, actually quite reliable. I didn't miss him a bit when he kikt.
Can I just say to anyone starting out in astronomy, it doesn't have to be this complicated. You can build telescopes from junk in your garage. If you have any queries regarding astronomy, then contact your local society. They'll be more than pleased to help. No local society? Then look around on the www. Its your universe. Go out and take a look. Its there for free. Try it and you won't be disappointed. And by the way Mr. Smith: thank you for making the Dobs. It always help to make things clearer.
35 years Master custom cabinet maker here. Phenomenal wood working skills! I built my own scope 15 years ago, I have the tools and plus skills, however I did not go to the extreme level you do! Exceptionally most premium job my fellow Craftsman!!!! Very well done!!!!!
Truss Tube Newtonian telescopes have certainly become more sophisticated over the years, especially allowing use of large mirrors. The cost in time and money is a real saving and within the abilities of many DIY builders, given the easy and low cost of tools now available.
Amazing workmanship. Brings back memories. I remember spending countless hours watching my friend build me one. Had it 6 years now. He is retired now. Mine and my sons was last ones he made. Astrosky Dobsonian 16" /f4.47 primary and 3.16" secondary by Terry Ostahowski. Sweet scope. Still want to get an EQ platform for it for long viewing sessions and short time astrophotography. Planets, Moon, Orion nebula, globs etc.
It's very satisfying to see people creating things with their own hands. Even more satisfying and poetic when you create instruments that allow you to see beyond what your naked eyes can see. And even more when it is coupled with that beautiful music. And, again, even more satisfying when it's clear that you make those things because you enjoy doing them. So thank you and congratulations
Truly one of the most relaxing videos I’ve seen. My blood pressure dropped 20 points😊Excellent craftsmanship! Wish I could devote the time and passion as you have.
NO GOD BUT GOD....What Is Islam? Islam is not just another religion. It is the same message preached by Moses, Jesus and Abraham. Islam literally means ‘submission to God’ and it teaches us to have a direct relationship with God. It reminds us that since God created us, no one should be worshipped except God alone. It also teaches that God is nothing like a human being or like anything that we can imagine. The concept of God is summarized in the Quran as: { “Say, He is God, the One. God, the Absolute. He does not give birth, nor was He born, and there is nothing like Him.”} (Quran 112:1-4) Becoming a Muslim is not turning your back to Jesus. Rather it’s going back to the original teachings of Jesus and obeying him
Woodwork is amazing and though im a boilermaker by trade ive done woodwork at school for 5 yrs..the smell of different types of wood as u work them is amazing too..this guy has all the right tools and even uses dovetail joints to build the box..something u dont see much these days as making them is a lotta work lol..but the strongest joint by far..well built buddy 👍😉
Not even a toddler in terms of woodwork, telescope making or even astronomy. I was mesmerized by this video and your meticulous work. I was dreaming of making a dobs, I may have to take a step back and rethink about whether I have the talent and patience enough to go ahead with that idea.
Hi and thanks for your comment. You can go about making a telescope in many ways. This Is how i do it. but it really doesnt have to be as complicated as this.
Great vid. Awesome wood working skill and to top it off dovetail joints by hand!!! Great to watch ppl with pride and dedication. Thanks for your effort in sharing.
Sorry, Edgar Froese died in 2015, time has become a foreign concept now that I'm retired. If you like Tangerine Dream you might also try Claus Shultze another minimalist, both have done Sci-Fi soundtracks for many big movies.
Hi Peter, Thank you for this amazing video! Brilliant craftsmanship combined with a strong sense of aesthetics - I can only congratulate you on a fantastic result. When I saw that you made your own wooden plugs, I realized that this is not only a guy who knows his craft, this is really an artist at work! No offense but, a nice side effect of your project is that I realize I'm not the only maniac in the universe - my projects with my Ducati racer sometimes tend to pass the point where wit and sense have ceased to exist and you are driven solely by the desire to create something just for that it is possible to do :) Once again, thank you and good luck with future projects.
What a pleasure to watch someone with true skills, even without explanations it's good to watch; i would love to see the moon through this piece of equipment. Well done Sir.
Thank you so much, de-mystified many of the mysteries of the build, I thought the first image of the moon was close, wasn't expecting to zoom in further!
superb craftsmanship Peter - I loved woodworking when I was at school many years ago, and was good at it, but this is a complete other level. Master skills!
Thank you for your kind comment. Many years of hard work and making mistakes to get to where I am now and I feel I still have a long way to go and alot to learn.
@@PeterSmithwoodsmith I thoroughly enjoyed your video - if I had the money, and my lower back was OK, I'd love a bigger dob. But, sadly, my 6" Saxon (SkyWatcher clone) dob will have to suffice. It lacks the beautiful craftsmanship of your dobs :(
Wow you are talented what a work of art. There is something beautiful about a handmade wooden Dobson. Great video! it just shows how much work is really involved to make one
Enjoyed both your craftsmanship and the music!!! My wood and metal work takes much longer so maybe I need more coffee to match your working speed 😊 Thanks!
I was a custom cabinetmaker in NYC for a few decades and I learned a few new tricks from your video. And it's been a long time since I have seen anyone cut dovetails by hand! A few questions: I wonder about the use of 1/2" baltic birch everywhere, even in the blocks that hold the trusses, when using hardwood would be easier and stronger for the blocks on the mirror box and a phenolic or plastic for the UTA blocks. Was this a design choice for the look of the scope? The second question is the tool you used to plunge cut the mortices. What is this? I used a biscuit joiner for years but haven't seen this. (I retired form cabinetmaking about 20-25 years ago)
Hello Will. Thank you for your comment. So in regards to The Baltic Birch plywood. Firstly the blocks that hold the truss pole, I have experimented with various hardwoods and I had several split and the hole that excepts the truss pole tended to warp with time, but with the Birch ply I have had no issues whatsoever. I enjoy working with Birch ply, plus it's the best quality most available plywood I can get here in the UK. Indeed there are lighter options out there but I have confidence in Birch ply. I have no experience in working with plastics and I find Birch ply does the job nicely So I have no intention of changing. The design was based purely on the functionality and what materials I have available that I can use and at a reasonable price. The Biscuit tool you question about is a Festool Domino. A pricey tool but very accurate and the tool has paid for itself ten times over. Not really a hobby tool. unless you have the money. Thanks once again. Peter
@@PeterSmithwoodsmith Thanks for the reply. I realized that was a Festool after a bit of Googling and also remembered why I never bought one- the price! Thanks again for the video. I am sure if I end up making a scope, I will watch it again. A lot of good techniques in there.
Peter your work is wonderful, unique. I saw the whole video and wondered if it was possible to make one use your project and then print it in 3D. Galileo would have been happy with you.
Great video, especially for someone like me who is contemplating making his own Dob. I do not have your craftsmanship nor tools so I am designing something much simpler; in other words, less form and more function if I can manage it. Thanks, and ignore the nasties on here.
Excelente trabajo. He disfrutado mucho con el video. Felicitaciones es magnífico. Solo me gustaría saber las características del elemento ajustable que lleva al costado por fuera. Es un lente?
That's a fine looking telescope. If I had a yard to put something like this into, I'd make a gazebo-sized Observatory to put it in, complete with the moving roof. It'd deserve it.
I have replaced the teflon blocks that allow turning in azimuth with small wheels that can only go forward backwards, and the movements in azimuth are now infinitely smoother, even at an almost microscopic level. I did another type of dobson only with square section hollow aluminum bars (the telescope also had a square section), it was extremely light and precise, and in dobson it turned much better than the wooden ones, since the weight was accumulated in the mirror, which the lever arm was much larger
Thank You so Much For this...Awesome Work and i think the Amateur Telescope Makers out there everywhere are about as grateful as I am and waiting for this too for a long time. imho I have a 62cm mirror that is 12.7 cm thick and weighs 43kg. Not sure how to mount it honestly
Beautiful telescope... I built my own dob but want to upgrade the 10" mirror.. would you be able to tell me where you got yours? Moon looked crystal clear..!
Really enjoyed to watch your perfect work and video, highly detailed wooden work with even highest level of craftsmanship, and the result was unbelievably good, very nice and focused Moon video, thanks for the excellent work.
Hi Dan. This is my own design and to make the plans useful for other people would take me a lot of time which I sadly do not have. But I do recommend this book. It has all you need to build a fantastic telescope. www.willbell.com/tm/dobtel.htm
Hello Jose. The Primary mirror was a secondhand mirror from an old telescope. the specifications are : Aperture 10" (254mm) focal length 47, 1/4 inch (1200mm) and a focal ratio of 4.2 Hope that helps.
excelent tutorial. one doubt: i want to make a home made refractor. i have a lens 127mm diameter and 300mm focal length. you think i can mannage a decent moon view with it? and what ocular lens you think i should use?
Hi there. I've been building telescopes out of Baltic Birch Plywood for over 15 years. It is very stable and one of the best plywoods on the market. I finish the plywood with 4 coats Yacht varnish this ensures the plywood isn't affected by moister and temperature. Every Telescope that I've made out of Birch Ply once collimated (alignment of the optics) has held its alignment true all night throughout each session. So basically I'm 100% happy and trust in this material. the only downside is it is a little bit heavy but besides this. I love working with Birch plywood. every lay is equal thickness. There are no voids or splits. and it cuts lovely. In my opinion, one of the best Dobsonian telescopes manufactures is Obsession Telescopes they have over 30 years of experience in building these types of telescope. Their Telescopes are made to an outstanding standard. They use Plywood too.
“I find your lack of *clamps* disturbing.” Jokes aside, brilliant build man. Loved the joinery and the craftsmanship. Also looks like you build instruments, because it looked like you built a simple snare drum for the top part.
Hello Light Show. Thanks for the comment. I do indeed make musical instruments check out my other videos. But I've never made a Drum before. You have given me an idea. Thank you.
Simplesmente maravilhoso!
