Making a Tin Can Submarine

A year or two ago, a couple bought a riveted rocket ship I made and hung it in their son's room as a nightlight. He loved it so much, they contacted me to create a custom submarine in the same style for their soon-to-arrive baby girl.
Notes:
▶ Wet-sanding the aluminum with a vibrating palm sander gives it a nice, even, satin finish.
▶ The latex caulk makes a nice adhesive for this kind of thing because it gives me plenty of time to reposition pieces if I need to, and it fills the gaps created by overlapping panels.
▶ What I cite as frosted acrylic was clear acrylic treated with some 400-grit sandpaper and the frosted-glass spray that I also used on the magnifier lens.
▶ I picked up the propellers at Aero Hobbies in Lewisville, TX. (Great place for RC hobbies. Check them out.)
▶ For the curious, there were 221 rivets.
Tools and materials featured in this video:
▶ General Tools #4 Circle Cutter: amzn.to/2gGjb33
▶ General Tools Automatic Center Punch: amzn.to/2htnN9B
▶ Rust-Oleum Frosted Glass Spray: amzn.to/2huXYGo
▶ LEDwholesalers Warm White LED Light Strip: amzn.to/2hLPkCo
▶ DAL Props Bullnose Propeller: amzn.to/2hrrOOM

Wesley, a tip for your auto punch tool. Drill a golf ball the size of the diameter of your punch end and epoxy it on, it's so much easier on the hands for multiple holes. I also use the golf ball trick for files that are missing the handles. Thanks for the videos.

The speeded up hammering sounded very much like riveting. Another win for sure!

I really enjoy your projects. And especially like that you show your mistakes. Many Makers do not. I like the lessons learned.

Love the project! And then I read the description, and the idea of making a rocketship version is intriguing.

Don't understand the title 'Making a Tin Can Submarine' don't know why but I was expecting it to be made from tin cans not sheet tin.
@WesleyTreat
@WesleyTreat 5 лет назад
I meant it in the same way old aluminum caravans were referred to as tin cans. It's a euphemism.

@@WesleyTreat Now you need to make a submarine from REAL tin can. :D

Great project, and very well presented. Been working on a couple of similar ideas, also made of aluminum, for awhile. But have to go back to the drawing board to recreate the effect you obtained by making it with multiple sections of aluminum instead of one. I'm thinking one based on Flash Gordon's Spaceship is going to look very nice in my den. Thank you for jump starting my thinking Process.

that really looked good. It goes from good to great when you no longer recognize the individual materials used but see the final project. All this video needed to be nominated for some great award is a chocolate milkshake. (large).

why did you frost the Magnifying glass when you put a piece of frosted acrylic in there already? not judgemental just wondering..Great work by the way!

Utterly Brilliant build, I have an auto centre punch and I use it a lot, but if I have to do a lot of punching I use a plain one with a hammer, I find it quicker and easier on the hands.

That's really cool! What did you wind up using around the edge of the plywood submarine shape? Some sort of laminate? Or did you just paint it? Next time, you could add some subtle color shifting in your lights if you were to use BlinkyTape from BlinkinLabs.

I just used some light gray melamine edge banding. It blended well with the aluminum. Thanks!

Should 'a been a pink submarine for the girl! But, kidding aside, great piece o' folk art! The only reason I didn't get into the navy back in '64 was the recruiting office was closed for lunch but the Air Force was open... Aim High!

Need to invest in a quality nuclear-powered camera so you don't run out of charge halfway through. Where did you get the "pong!" sonar sound?
@WesleyTreat
@WesleyTreat 7 лет назад
Right? I was going to hook up my wall adapter, but couldn't find the bit that went into the battery compartment. As for sounds, www.freesound.org/ is a great resource. Search for "sonar."

Misleading title. Submarine is neither made of tin or cans. Also is not a functional submarine. Disappoint.
