I don't understand how people can dislike Dave's videos. Here's an individual who's providing a good service, and in the process making an honest living for himself and his family. I'm sure it can be a bit discouraging to receive such negative comments, but from someone who enjoys your wholesome, and instructional videos, keep up your hard work.
you are doing a great thing making these videos and allowing people to learn these things...knowledge is power and is something no one can take away from you...thank you
After an unsuccessful day of hunting, I taught my daughters how to build a travois similar to what you made. When the eye rolling started, I asked them how they would get me out of the woods if something were to happen to me (I weigh over 200). They paid attention after that and successfully built their own travois.
I try. That's all we can do really. Raise them right and hope for the best with sage guidance. The twins are 12 and our youngest daughter is 7. Just doing what I can to give them a good start.
Dave! Thanks again for some awesome teaching. I've been watching your vids from the very beginning and it amazes me that your enthusiasm has not lessened at all during all of these years. It's evident in your face that you still have as much fun as you did in the beginning (maybe more). ROCK ON, Brother!!! :)
Fantastic tutorial, Dave! I wonder how many sick and wounded people have been saved over the years, thanks to a good friend and a solid travois? I'm guessing a good few!
I like the new intro, very nice Dave. kudos for the graphic designs on this site and the PF TV, Great video on a subject that I have forgotten about. Thanks
Hey Dave, I recently have been out scavenging for materials for basic campcrafts that I will be completing at my personal space I'm also building for phase 1. I have a stash spot where I've been gathering the material to be moved. I've been dreading the idea of making many trips with my small sled but not anymore. I believe ill be making my first trevios! Thank you sir for another great piece of knowledge. BTW FOR WHAT IT S WORTH... I think your Pathfinder TV channel is wonderful. Ill pay 10 cents a day(and twice on Sunday, haha) to watch and learn from 5 guys who have a ton of knowledge in a field that I love. Its the bargin of the century!
I was talking about this sort of thing with a friend just earlier today, my opinion a very good bit of kit you can make up fairly quickly and has a few uses as well as your main train for carrying large loads..... Dave just want to say I like this intro too. Thanks Dan
Good vid bro. Food for thought. How about using the 2 long poles and lashing together 2 of the short poles for your next fire tripod, after travois is unloaded at next camp site. Multiple uses for the travois. Any thoughts?
Thanks for the vid Dave! Right now I'm over seas so I can't watch PathfinderTV but as soon as I'm back state side I'm subscribing for sure. $3 a month is absolutely a steal!
Dave, you of all people should know that you should NEVER strike your knife with another metal object. Especially in cold weather when the steel will be even more brittle. Not only do you risk seriously damaging both tools but pieces could chip off and pose a serious eye hazard. You are right about your knife being able to handle being pounded in to clean out the notch (with a wood baton) within reason. Or there is the slightly more time consuming method of making several cuts where you want the notch to be and then you can easily break out the thinner chips.
Wagh! I thought I knew how to make a travois. But have never thought to 'flat' the bottom of the skids. Seems I always learn something from your videos. You certainly have Hair of the Bear.
Dave, I don't know why you expend so much time and energy on these videos, but a serious thank you is in order. I'm fairly certain that most of Johnny Q is not aware (oblivious) of just how valuable this type of information might become in the future. I'm of the opinion that these concepts and this knowledge should have NEVER been lost. What do we actually know these days without google or RU-vid? We're a civilization of useless knowledge/information anymore. Brother, thank you. Seriously. I will be subscribing to the other paid channel ($2/ MO is a no-brainer, come on). I'd just as soon go ahead and pay for the whole year or more.
Again Dave--you your VIDs are the best--can't wait for the next one on pathfinder TV. by the way Pathfinder TV is the best-----great move--great instructors--great great info.
Our Scout Troop built one of those for a competition called the Klondike Derby. The boys hauled all the gear and an "injured" scout, performed skills at certain stations. Won hands down because that winter it was rainy and muddy, all the other troops built sleds
In bad weather, when you get to your new camp location, you can prop the front up on a tree drape your tarp around and have a quick temp 'tipi' shelter.
Dave - Love all your videos and have been practicing a lot. I notice that your last few shelter videos you've had clear patches of ground for your tarp setup. I'd be interested to see you do a shelter setup on snow covered ground. It would help us here in MInnesota.
People spend three to five dollars each day for coffee That at the end of the day most likely was not the best coffee. What Dave has been doing for years is providing people with life saving skills , that most of the population has forgotten or have no clue about. It is a very time consuming thing to do what Dave has done, its not just grabbing a video camera and pressing record! You got to have the knowledge and the know how, And present it in a way common folk know how to understand it. Every year natural disasters happen , and when they do, I'd like to see how long the local store has what you need to survive. If you ask me 2.99 a month is cheep insurance... I will skip coffee for a day each month so when something happens, I won't be the guy who took no note... IMO You got my support Dave!!
I have really liked the videos I have seen here. I see a lot of people have liked you videos here as well and are saying can't wait till the next one. What they don't realize is that if they want to see the follow on to this video, they will have to join your subscription based channel. If your videos here are going to become teaser videos for your "Pay" channel, I'm outta here. "Here is something you can make, but if you want to know what you can do with it, it'll cost you." That just isn't cool to me.
Would it be an idea to lash the front cross member underneath the rest of the travois, so that you had the weight of your load resting on wood rather than the lashing? Thanks for another great video Dave, it helped me find a film I secretly watched as a kid when I should have been asleep - All I could remember was this dirty guy asleep or injured lying on a travois whilst his horse dragged him about. I couldn't work out what the structure was called so I could search for the film. After all these years wondering, using "Travois" helped me find it straight away!
i had never watched dual survivor before but i just watched the first 4 episodes on netflix. awesome work brother....i cant believe cody doesn't wear shoes. very risky
dave I always love watching your videos I need to get out in the woods more myself and when I was younger before RU-vid and comfort technology I used to live for the outdoors especially in winter but it seems the older I get the less I like being cold and sleeping outside isn't as much fun as I remember ,is that normal or am I just being lazy ? lol
Whats a good pack for bushcraft camping/hikes that wont break the bank? Any ideas? I prefer a more traditional look rather than the modern hiking packs. Thanks
Actually, YT does not offer the higher resolution UNTIL THE VID FULLY RENDERS ... It takes time (a good while) after an HD source clip is uploaded to RU-vid BEFORE that video is FULLY PROCESSED. ... I am seeing a full 1080P option (as well as 720P/HD) at this time. ... I have noticed that only standard resolution is available when most vids are first uploaded. Takes time before it is "fully baked".
You mentioned that the back should be 1.5-2 times as wide as the front. I am wondering why. My initial thought was that it might improve balance but I am also thinking that the front all ready looked pretty wide. Just asking because the wider back would make it more of a pain to drag through dense areas.
I would have thought making the front poles just wide enough for your hips would have been better. Then you could tie to your belt, or even make a shoulder harness to help handle the vertical weight component.
I figure you keep on crying about nothing and soon you'll have something to really cry about.Enjoy the free videos that we have,Dave is giving you options, thats a good deal.
7:17 "Now, if you're afraid to do that with your knife, you've probably got the wrong knife. Just saying" LOL! I once tried to baton some firewood with a $1 Wal-Mart folder, It broke with the first strike. Lucky for me I was in a park just practicing techniques while enjoying a day at the lake.
