Making a Tumbler in the Cricut Mug Press: 5 Mistakes to Avoid!

We’re just getting started with the Cricut Mug Press, but we’re already floored at how well it sublimates mugs and tumblers. To be honest, we almost didn’t buy the Cricut Mug Press, as we thought it only did heat press on mugs (and we already have too many mugs). But once Sheesh So Crafty showed the world that you can actually sublimate skinny tumblers in the Cricut Mug Press as well (link to her video below!), we decided to buy one and see if we could sublimate skinny tumblers in the Cricut Mug Press. And it works!
However, we did make quick a few mistakes on our first couple of tumbler presses in the Cricut Mug Press. So in this video, we show you the mistakes we made with the mug press so you don’t make them as well. We also show you one full, good skinny tumbler press in the Cricut Mug Press to show you how to do it the right way.
We hope this helps you push the possibilities with your new Cricut Mug Press!

I recently bought a Cricut mug press. After pressing a couple of handled mugs I decided to try a short metal tumbler & found that it worked well in the mug press. I was going to experiment on some small skinny tumblers but wasn’t sure exactly how to approach it. Your video is extremely helpful. You’ve probably saved me considerable time & money! Thanks!

This is my first time watching y'all and you're great! I really appreciate everyone of your tips and you're the only ones I have seen give some of them. For your bottom circle you could always cut it out of a thin piece of silicone, grill mat or teflon sheet for a more permanent use. I can't wait to see more of your videos. Thank you for sharing!

Thanks so much for the kind words! And that’s a great idea to have a more permanent cover for the bottom plate - we didn’t have a thin enough piece to use when we made the video, and your comment reminded us to go buy one. 😄

For the ghosting at the top I place a wooden skewer to hold the tumbler up. And it works perfectly. I have noticed the cricut infusable ink doesn't work so I only do sublimation ink when doing the tumblers. Also your suppose to remove that silver sticker from the bottom of the tumbler.

Infusible ink paper sheets from HTV work amazing I’ve been making 20oz tumblers in a Cricut mug press using these kinda sheets and they always turn out great, only mistake I ever made using them is leaving them in the mug press to long and then they will turn out like that one just like it, less time I think it would have turned out great. 4 mins each side max I also use silicone wraps.

I used my mug heat press that came with my heat press when making tumblers with infusible ink tumblers. I had to press the top and bottom sections separately and turned occasionally w/in 5 mins each half and the color was even both ends. I did have blotches on a couple and the ink ran some covering up apart of the letter A in the design. Frustrated with seams and ghosting on the very top and bottom.

What is the size you cut the paper for the tumbler???
@JustMightDIY
@JustMightDIY 3 года назад
This is a bit tricky to answer. We can say that the image itself was printed at 8.2" wide x 9.3" high. We left extra white on the paper on the top and bottom to allow for taping. We trimmed one of the sides flush with the design and left a little extra on the other side to allow for a slight overlap at the seam. Hope this helps!

I absolutely love your videos! I did everything in your video for the 20 ounce skinny tumblers and my tumblers their colours don’t seem to be vibrant. I am using an Epson 2800 sublimation printer, and hippo sublimation ink. I don’t know what I can be doing wrong? I have watched other videos where people leave the tumbler in for three minutes and 20 seconds and only turn it twice. Any tips on why my tumblers may not look vibrant? Thank you so much!

Hey! We’re so glad you like our videos! Are you using a high quality print setting? And what kind of paper are you using? As for the length of time, we’ve found that this amount of time works well - if you leave it in too long, you can overlook the sublimation, which will affect the color.

Hi, thank you for this awesome tutorial. I am very new at this a little hesitant. Your tutorial has helped me to understand how to sublimate tumblers. I have one question, with the 20oz tumblers do I have to leave the space at the bottom of the mug press open? Or can I place it all the way down in the mug press? Also when I turn it each time I must adjust the silicone, correct?
@JustMightDIY
@JustMightDIY 3 года назад
Hey - we’re glad this tutorial is helpful! When your tumbler is upside down, don’t put it all the way down over the plate at the bottom - that will cause ghosting at the top rim of your tumbler. Make sure that it’s higher than the plate at the bottom of the press. As for the silicone, we keep ours in the same general position and rotate the tumbler instead. Happy subbing!
@abigailmobley-bellinger7570

@@JustMightDIY Ok. So just to be clear that means when the tumbler is upright I place it all the way down, but when it is upside down I don't put it all the way down over the plate at the bottom? I apologize if this is a silly question. I am so new at this, just trying to understand the process. Thank you in advance for your patience with me.
@JustMightDIY
@JustMightDIY 3 года назад
Hey! That’s not a silly question, and we’re happy to help! You are absolutely correct on that. When your tumbler is upright, you can sit it on the plate (just be sure to cover the plate with something so it doesn’t scratch the bottom of your tumbler as you turn it). Then when you flip the tumbler upside down, don’t put it all the way down over the plate - you’ll get ghosting on the rim. You’ve got this!

If you wanted to add a name to one side of the tumbler, how would you do that? Would you print the name on top of the design?
@JustMightDIY

We would probably incorporate the name into the design before it’s printed. We’ve heard that you *can* sublimate in layers (design first, then adding the name on top), but we haven’t tried that.

Might be a stupid question (I apologize if it is). I have a vinyl cutter from US Cutter, so I don’t have a Cricut, do you need a circut cutter to use the press? Thanks!!
@JustMightDIY
@JustMightDIY 3 года назад
Definitely NOT a stupid question! You don’t have to have a Cricut cutting machine to use the mug press. You do, however, need some sort of sublimation material - either a printer that uses sublimation ink or the Cricut Infusible Ink sheets (for mugs, not tumblers). However, we’re not sure if you can cut the infusible ink sheets on the US Cutter, so you may want to check into that if you don’t have a way to print with sublimation ink.

With sublimation- I guess it doesn’t matter if you apply heat AGAIN to an area that is already done??
@JustMightDIY
@JustMightDIY 3 года назад
Great question! We have discovered in the testing that we have done that if you heat a surface that has already been sublimated, it will lighten the design that was already there. It essentially starts turning the ink back into a gas state at high temperatures.
@amandaroberts2013
@amandaroberts2013 3 года назад
@@JustMightDIY So when you turn the tumbler, isn't it reheating the area? Did it lighten it?
@JustMightDIY
@JustMightDIY 3 года назад
@@amandaroberts2013 Another great question! We haven’t noticed any banding on the tumblers due to this. This could be because the sublimated parts aren’t getting direct heat due to the silicone pieces we use to fill the extra space, and we only do 1 minute per side, which isn’t enough to noticeably unsub. When we’ve tried a layered design on a regular sub blank that stays in for 5-6 minutes and isn’t moved, we do see some of the original design transferring back to the paper.

The silicone insert is sooooo much smarter than the cardboard! I was thinking the exact same thing when I watched her video last week. I wonder about buying a silicone wrap and if it would be thick enough since it would wrap around the entire tumbler. What do you guys think? Also the tumblers that you used and that you provided the link for...do you feel they are GOOD quality tumblers? Have you used this company before?
@JustMightDIY
@JustMightDIY 3 года назад
Thanks!! We don't have a silicone wrap, so we're not sure how thick they usually run. It *might* work with the 30oz, as there's less of a gap to fill. However, you'll prob want to get one that doesn't have one of those big buckles, but that's just a guess. Let us know if you try it - we'd love to know if it works!
@pattibaileydesigns
@pattibaileydesigns 3 года назад
@@JustMightDIY Yeah that's the only thing I was thinking is that they seem fairly thin. I noticed that you guys didn't use a protective sheet like butcher paper or anything. You aren't concerned about your Sub paper bleeding onto the silicone of the mug press? Do you like the quality of the tumblers from the company you ordered from? You gotta do more of these too!! I wanna see! LOL
@JustMightDIY
@JustMightDIY 3 года назад
@@pattibaileydesigns Hey there again! So for the protective sheet - you don't need one for the Infusible Ink Sheets (they're backed in plastic), so if you're doing the regular sized coffee mugs, no protective sheet is needed. For the pineapple graphic that we printed on the A-Sub paper, we forgot the butcher paper for the first 30 seconds or so (which is why you hear me freak out in the video during the full press portion). We ended up grabbing the tumbler out and using the butcher paper for the exact reason you mentioned. Luckily, even after all of the subbing time with the turns/flip, the A-Sub paper didn't bleed through to the protective paper. We still plan on using butcher paper though, because we don't want any bleed through onto the press. For your question on the quality of the tumblers - they do seem to be good quality. We've only had them for a few days, but they feel pretty good and subbed so nicely. We recommend them at this point and will update in the description if that changes overtime for some reason, or if we find anything better. Hope this helps! We do plan to do more testing and hope to release more videos on this topic. :)
