Thank you so much ! I didn’t know which side of my brain wasn’t working. Figured neither side was working. Always doubt myself rather than thinking that maybe the information given was incorrect. Thank you for saving my sanity.

I went by the interior size of the viewfinders on the drawright website and then just subtracted that from the 8x10 inches to get the size of the borders. The small viewfinder being 4x5 inside and the large one being 6x7.5 inside. Small viewfinder will have 2 inch border on the 10 inch length, and 2 1/2 inches on the 8 inch width. Large viewfinder would have 1 inch border on the 10 inch length, and 1 1/4 inches on the 8 inch width. Corners met perfectly on the diagonals.

That makes sense and is also a great way of "reverse engineering" the measurements! 👍 Thanks for sharing!

I've had DotRSotB for over a decade and have never built my own viewfinder because I just couldn't figure out the measurements! And then the "new" edition has instructions for cutting out a 1"×1 1/4" rectangle from the centre of the crosshairs which equally boggled me and I just pounced on RU-vid because I knew some genius would have cracked it and made a tutorial! Thank you, thank you, thank you! 💐💐💐

I keep one in my back pocket that I made out of plastic from a discarded tub lid. It's about the same proportions as the paper size I usually use. The plastic is a little hard to cut with a knife but even though it's a little imperfect it's still handy and won't break. I drilled weensie holes in the corners to help with stopping the blade there and not going over and making too much of a mess. I also have a View Catcher but I leave it at home. Frankly I like my homemade one better because I'm not afraid of sitting on it and it was free.
@SusanChiang
@SusanChiang 11 месяцев назад
Oh that is a very clever way to create a pocket sized one. Such a great idea - I would not have thought of repurposing a discarded tub lid for that. Not only was it free, you upcycled too!

It was only after I spent some time and wasted paper creating the wrong sized viewfinders that I figured I couldn't be the only one. :) I'm glad that it was helpful - too bad it didn't save you those upfront hours though!

This was just great! Thanks so much. I thought I was just tired when I read those instructions, but they were definitely confusing. I’m a regular fan of searching RU-vid for solutions, and you had it. I did spend way more time doing this than I thought, but it was also kind of fun. I need to find a better solution for the picture pane still. I ended up cutting one out of a clear folder for now. It might be okay but a little flimsy. Thanks again.

You're welcome, glad this helped. If you have a hardware store nearby they might carry small acrylic sheets. I picked mine up from there and it was already an 8x10 size.

You are suppose to measure 2 inches down from each corner on the cross lines. Then draw the horizontal lines from each measured corner.

Hm...that may be true, but I could have swore I tried it that way after reading and re-reading the instructions. Thanks for leaving the comment so others can try it this way.

No, I bought it from the hardware store specifically for watercolor painting - so I did "have it on hand" in that sense!

IKEA often have acrylic windows in their cheaper frames if you have one of those handy.

Thanks for the video! 🌻 Would this work if using an acetate sheet instead of an acrylic one like the one you’ve used? (I also have glass from a picture frame that I could use, maybe)
@SusanChiang
@SusanChiang Год назад
Hi! Acetate would work, except for the fact that at times the book instructs holding the panel up or laying it over your hand for tracing purposes - so in that case it would need to be rigid. Something to keep in mind!

I thought she ment us to go in two inches along the diagonal on all four corners. Also where do you get the hard plastic sheet from my local tool shop doesn't sell any light thin sheets.
@SusanChiang
@SusanChiang Год назад
I got them from my local hardware store (Home Depot) but I've also seen them at Art Supply stores as well - especially those that carry supplies for model building! I just did a search on Amazon and found them there too, actually! I never thought to check but these would work: amzn.to/3MGtjGK
