Hi, I'm Susan, and thanks for checking out my RU-vid channel!
I'm a former architect who found her way back to art through watercolors. On this channel you'll find simple tutorials, process videos, and informative time-lapse videos that hopefully help you feel inspired to put some paint onto paper.
The information I offer here is based on my own experiences - even if sometimes it's limited. I believe there's always more to learn and that we are all a "work in progress". What I have to share is what I know to the best of my knowledge in the moment the video is made. Please take what you find is helpful and leave what you think is not.
Ultimately I hope you feel inspired and that these videos help you in some way wherever you are in your journey!
Your videos are lovely. Which one did you prefer? I think i like the third one best..BUT i really like the differences too. I think development of my own style will come from trying these three...then taking what i believe is the best of each. 😊
Ive just found your channel. This is second video im seeing. I like your style very much...but i see you haven't made any new videos for a while 😢. Hope you do soon. 😊 There's a flip through of this sketchbook i think...thats the joy of time travel 😊 ...im going to watch that next. Thankyou.
Thankyou, Susan. What a beautiful little painting. The shadows are perfect. Its very hot here in Greece, the shade around that door looks cool and realistic. Lovely 😊
very good and helpful tutorial! i hope i'll get to try this tutorial soon. thank you so much for showing how u did this wet on wet technique and explained about the process of your thought processes while painting.
Thank you for your wonderful video. Would you be happy to tell me the name of the gorgeous colour 3rd in from the left in your palette, the soft salmon/peach colour please?
I didn’t see anyone else asking-what are the bits of tape at the top and bottom seam line of each of the square book pages? I’ve never noticed those before.
Hahnemuhle 250gsm 100% Cotton Sketchbook, is the best quality I've seen. Their Mould made sheets, are second to none in terms of quality. Hahnemuhle makes the best quality papers in my experience, better even compared to Arches,Waterford etc..
0 seconds ago Hi, Can I ask you how you decide what colours to use when painting in the background on the right hand side of your painting to give the imptression of dense background foliage? Many thanks
Hi, Can I ask you how you decide what colours to use when painting in the background in this painting? I have seen people use a similar approach when painting dense background foliage ie in a woodland scene. Many thanks
ECHO "wish you talked us through what you were doing" ...as all my favorite tutorials do! It's so hard to figure out which color you're choosing to put in etc. by just looking. And some of your techniques are hard to hone in on without stopping and starting over and over. I do love what you do and your overall approach to painting, thank you.
Thank you for your feedback! As I’ve continued to film and edit more and more videos over the years I’ve definitely developed a better understanding of what is more helpful from the viewers standpoint! Been thinking about refilming a new version of this slower (and with more painting experience!) stay tuned!
Wow, such a beautiful neat space for your art room. I would love to see your previous art pieces. I'm curious what the Ikea drawer dimensions are. Thanks so much for sharing with us.
Everything is so neat and peaceful. My studio is a riot of color thanks to my bulletin boards. I love the bookcase. Can you please tell me where you bought it? Thanks for this super zen tour! I am amazed that some tours feature the messiest drawers. Yikes!
Baohong has very nice 100% sketchbooks. I also like the new Tumuarta 100% cotton. (So far so good. Well, you may need a bit of glue from time to time 😅) Been using their regular 25% WC sketchbooks for a while now; very good books. Speedball sketchbooks if you’re into panoramic scenes. Paint looks nice and bright. A lot of people like Paul Ruben sketchbooks.
Lovely brushwork and a nice format to watch a painting demo once focus was resolved. However, I am always perplexed by how many professional watercolorists use only one water source that is dirty while they paint. I was taught to use two water sources. One to rinse your brush in and the other to always have a clean source of water to paint with.
Thank you so much ! I didn’t know which side of my brain wasn’t working. Figured neither side was working. Always doubt myself rather than thinking that maybe the information given was incorrect. Thank you for saving my sanity.
Terrific video! Thank you so much!! Your work is lovely! I agree with your reasons for working the way you do. My drawing skills are good, but I haven't done watercolors in years, so I'm a bit nervous about starting to use them again. This style is so much less intimidating! Your drawing is just right for this charming painting!
Beautiful! Thanks for showing the one that didn't work out and all your encouraging words. Sometimes when I do that I get discouraged and wonder why I keep making the same mistakes or can't achieve the look I'm trying. To know that others go through this will keep me trying again!
I am a beginner painter and looked to you to see how you painted. And what the process was. It was helpful except for the things that did not explain which I do not know what the first thing you did with the white stuff for the snow was it glue was it? I don’t know what it was but definitely you painted over it and it did not paint so did not know what that was so I was lost. It looked very helpful if I knew what it was. I think it came out very nicely. I want more of a loose painting like you said. Every time I paint it looks like it the coloring book. Everything is perfect color and I want more of a loose watercolor type painting. I found that I can draw a lot better and then paint it but I want to be able to be able to just paint loosely. Thanks for your help.
