This is the first video in this series for which I’ve been subscribed to see it uploaded - I discovered your channel a few weeks ago and have watched the whole series so far, as well as most of the repair series. I enjoyed it all, so I’m really excited for this one! Thanks so much for the work you do, and the knowledge you share with us! I plan to start my first violin soon after Christmas. My friends love your channel too. Love from New York!
Winfield, Kansas, USA. I am in the middle of working on my second restoration of a violin. I found your channel during my first restoration. This second instrument is a family heirloom and I would never have agreed to even attempt to repair it had I not watched your videos. Thank you for putting all this information on you tube.
Dear Kimon, Thank you for your tutorials. I follow you since February. I play violin, but I decided to try, under your instructions to make a violin. It will be a big challenge for me. I have already the tools from my sister. She is violinmaker. We are from Belgrade, Serbia. God bless you!
Thank you maestro-Kimon for another brilliant and inspirational video. This method of attaching the finished neck to the body is most interesting and I will use it in my next instrument so as to compare it with my usual method. I live in the North East of England and would love to win the strings offer.
Nice work Kimon!Truly innovative that really makes sense! Indeed you have managed to reduce the number of measurements that you have to control simultaneously plus have better control of the tools to make more accurate work! Please give some more measurements that you take in your videos... I am from Athens, Greece
I am amazed at these videos, especially seeing how you fitted the neck. (But I must have blinked when you fitted the nut to the fingerboard, because I missed it.)
I like your method Kimon. It is not much different from building a classical guitar where you put the neck and the top together first. Then the sides and finally the back. Thank you for a nice video . Christer in Stockholm
Thank you so much for everything. I was could fix a violin with a broken neck and the Bam case video is very fun. Carolina Gonzalez, from Naucalpan, Mexico
Now that I'm asking commenting anyway, I just remembered I have a question or two: I just finished my first violin a few months ago, and the next build is either going to be a cello or a violin more to practice before going straight for the cello build. I'm very excited to build a cello, as it's my main instrument, and I have recently bought some lovely wood for it. My first question is, would you rough out the plates and neck to let the wood dry faster, or is it too dangerous? The wood is about two years old, so according to the 1 year per inch rule, it is dry. It is also not losing much if any weight. What I'm worried about is the neck twisting and the center seam opening up on the plates. What do you think? My second question is: What will the main differences be building a cello rather than a violin? Is there anything I should know or focus on? I'm more unsure about the graduation process, as there is not all that much information to find as there is for violin. Keep up the good work with the videos btw. I'm watching every one of them as soon as they are released and quite enjoy them :-) - Tobias
Hi My name is Wiley Reeves and I live in Elkton Md. I like the work you do. I have played music many years and have made a few instruments.violin and mandolin.Great work!!
Mvg Peter
Great video, I’m building my second violin , the first was finished on a wing and a prayer . I want to be far more precise with number two . I will be gluing the top on first as per your experiment . Thank you for taking the time to post. I’m from liverpool by the way , in case your still giving away those strings ? Ha ha
Great series! I have watched them all. I have built guitars and purchased a HOPF. violin recently needing some work (before viewing your videos). I am inspired by you and will endeavor to repair it myself. Will there be detail on fitting the sound post and bridge?
Hello, and thankyou for your advises, inspired me to build a cello because i'm learning play cello and now i'd like to make my own made by myself, are there theses strings for cello? If there are i'm in Cuenca Ecuador. Send you hugs.
How hard is it to get into violin making? What education do you need? I have no experience with wood crafting but I have a great interest in violin building and the whole history of the violin makers (as a cellist)
I don't know what harder is: playing the cello of building it!!! 😁 It depends how handy you are. If you have always avoided any kind of work (even painting your fence) then I think that it's not for you. Maybe try making some simple things out of wood with a couple of simple tools. Try copying the tailpiece of your cello with a couple of files by the DIY shop. Start simple without investing too much money.
@@maestrokimon oh and also, I think builing it and playing both has his value ;) I always see the luthier as an artist! the work you do is magical, turning wood into a beautiful instrument
Hello, thanks for the video. Can you comment on whether your experiment was a success? Do you recommend the procedure where you leave the backplate off while attaching the neck?
I think this is a better way as you can control everything better. Maybe this will also help with fingerboard dropping over time - unless it’s very humid then it will drop anyway. I live in Singapore where it is humid all year round.
In your videos you say " the measurement here is right and this measurement is right" but you don't say what the measurements are. Please give the measurements.
