you all prolly dont give a shit but does anybody know of a trick to log back into an instagram account..? I was stupid lost my password. I would appreciate any tips you can offer me!
@Daniel Ellis i really appreciate your reply. I got to the site thru google and im trying it out atm. I see it takes a while so I will reply here later with my results.
Hi Sue, I make the holes as small as possible to only just allow the strips through so it hasn't been a problem. I have washed mine many times now and it has only lost one or two strips. I guess you could knot the strips on both sides of the hole but if you do, use longer strips. I wonder if dogs might chew on the knots but I don't know. Good luck!
Amazing! I was having so much trouble finding a base that didn't end up costing more than just buying one. I happen to have canvas from an old DIY project - so this is literally perfect. Thank you for this video!
Oh my goodness! Great idea on using some stiff fabric as the base! I was hesitant to make one after watching another video mentioning that they use a rubbery base that you can find like at a hardware store. I can't believe I didn't think of using some sturdier fabric instead 😅 Will definitely give this one a go. I mean, it really is a plus that it's washable
I'm so glad you like it! I've come up with another idea for a similar but different-shaped toy and will be putting it up just as soon as I can record it.
Hi Jimi. For some reason I can't find your comment on RU-vid, only on my laptop. I find 1.5" works well because the fabric folds and rolls and a longer length gives a better snuffling experince and ensures the base is covered up. The choice is yours! I guess you could make them narrower but longer and that might have the same effect. Good luck!
Thanks thats beautiful. A buttonhole scissor has a way to insure the half inch cut. I often mark my regular scissor with temporary tape and a sharpie on the tape to mark the length of cut.
you could also put a long strip that is threaded over the two strips, or you could sew a line horizontally across the strips, that would speed it up and be easier on your hands
Hi Helen! Wonderful video! Do you think strips of old t-shirt could work for this? I've got a bag full of them and was thinking of making a few mats to donate to the shelter.
Hi Annie, I think T shirt fabric would work for the strips but use something thicker and non-fraying for the base otherwise it will be very difficult to make and will fall apart. Good luck!
It's like, why mum are you doing this to me? Why are you making me work so hard? What did I do to you? Lolol 🤗❤️✌️ I'm going to make one for my cat but, I think he might use it for a bed.. OH WAIT!! This will be perfect for Yuri!! He Love's to hide things in or under my bathroom rug's, messing them all up n I'm disabled so it's hard for me to fix them.. Wow!! Thank you for sharing this.. You may have helped me more than you could know.. 😄🎉
@@helenatton-FIDODogTraining Hi Helen, what is liver cake? My cat isn’t very motivated by dry treats or kibble so always on the lookout for something that might tempt him.....especially if they’ll work with the snuffle mat which I think he’d like as he’s a real sniffer.
@@meganyoung5464 Hi. Liver cake is usually really popular with dogs and cats because it's smelly and tasty. Good for them too as long as you don't give them too much! It's very high in Vitamin A and can cause diarrhoea if you feed a lot of it so tiny pieces are best. I make my own. I can't paste my recipe here for some reason. If you email me at helen@fidobehaviour.com I can send it to you. H
@@SuperSarahs123 Sounds a great colour combination. You could perhaps try fake suede or leather or rubberised cotton instead of canvas. I used blackout curtain lining which is rubberised, (sadly boring and white) and have washed it many times. Hope you find something good!
@@helenatton-FIDODogTraining omg you are a genius. I went looking for a large grey microsuede curtain in my totes. Found the canvas and now can't find the bloody curtain. lol
I have found that they don't. I've lost a few strips over the past 3 ears but I think my dog pulled them out! If you have the patience, you can knot the strips on both sides of the the base cloth to be absolutely sure.
Hi Kristin, Canvas would probably work OK, as long as it doesn't fray. I've washed mine many times and the only time I've lost strips is when one of the dogs pulled one out! Make sure the holes are not too big. I used a skewer to push some of the ends through. Someone else suggested knotting the strips on both sides of the holes. It would be a pain but very secure.
I love how simple this is, even though it takes some time to assemble. I have a Pitador / Labrabull who would hopefully love this on Alaska winter days.
Glad you like it. Mine is still going strong after 4 years! I just wish I'd had more brighter coloured fabric to use. White is a bit boring but it is all I had in lockdown.
Hi. Any fabric without a weave, like canvas or something with a coating, like the plastic coated cloth you can buy for table covering. Anything that doesn't fray when you cut it really. I made mine from blackout curtain lining, which has a rubber backing.
A great idea for entertaining the dog inside, but....why not just feed your dog on the grass under the mat? Nature’s snuffle mat! We always scatter kibble on the lawn when it’s dry to encourage sniffing and to slow eating, but I will make one for when it’s too wet to feed outside, thanks.
Hi. Thanks for your comment. Grass is great for scattering treats. Even when I do enrichment activities outside I will scatter a few around in the grass as well as offering toys. Some people don't have easy access to a lawn unfortunately and at least their dogs can still enjoy foraging in a similar way. Using a snufffle mat also means they can have the same fun inside when the weather is really bad, as you say, or you can't take them out for some other reason.
Hi! As a non-doggy person, I want to make one of these for my niece and nephew’s new pup. Could you advise whether the furry plush type of fleece would be OK as opposed to the ‘bald’ fleece you used? Thank you! 😊
Hi. If I understand what you mean by furry plush fleece, I suspect you will find that it frays a lot and the pup will tear off mouthfuls of fur. Felt or fleece is often used for the rags because it's thick, soft and needs no hemming. Craft shops often sell bags of felt offcuts that are ideal. Hope you find something suitable and colourful!
Hi! I'd like to make one of these for my dogs, but I'm struggling to decide what to use for the base. You said you can use canvas for it, do you know if a (clean) canvas drop cloth would work and be safe?
I used blackout curtain lining, which has some form of rubber or plastic in it but any non-woven fabric that doesn't fray will do just as well. Here are some examples -knits, spandex, fleece, faux suede, plasticised cotton, vinyl. I would avoid felt for the base as it may shronk when washed.
I have made two already based on this tutorial, for my dog and his friend! I've posted about them on my Instagram, and was wondering if you have an Instagram account that I can credit you for the tutorial!
@@jennandsparky8214 Hi Jennifer. That's really good of you. I do have an Instagram account although I hardly use it at the moment. It's time I did I guess! It's helenatton x
Thank you so much for this video! It's the best tutorial I have found. What kind of fabric are you using though? I know you mentioned in the video but I didn't get it
Hi. I used blackout curtain lining because it's all I had during lockdown, but you can use any fabric that doesn't fray easily, like canvas, plasticised cotton or even a felt-type.
Hi. That hasn't happened in my experience, but if it is does I suggest teaching your dog a reliable 'Leave it' cue so he/she learns what is and isn't available. Check out my video and I hope it helps you.
