Alternative for the phone reference: After making your thumbnail document, simply created a grid with 480px x-spacing and 853px y-spacing. This will automatically create adjacent blocks of the 480x853 size. BTW love these videos, Walter. Helped me a lot. I'll definitely recommend you if anyone asks me where I learnt webtoon formatting.

I'm loving this series! It's a great timing for me, I'm planning to start a webcomic and actually just finished my script! I have a question: how do you manage the gutter in the infinite canvas format? I get how the vertical distance between panels changes pacing, but what about the distance between the border of the canvas and the panels? What things can be affected by changing it? Sorry if it's a weird question haha
@walterostlie
@walterostlie 4 года назад
There are a lot of things you can play with when it comes to gutter space on the left and right. Zero gutter can make the panel feel larger and more in-your-face. If you make a panel very small, it can make a character feel small or weak. Shrinking panels can have a time slowdown affect. Increasing could speed things up. Large panels slow the pace for the reader because they have to spend time. Small panels, less detail, speed up the pace. Prolly more, just have to play around with it.

@walterostlie
@walterostlie 4 года назад
Are you talking about coming up with the name for your comic or coming up with the look of the logo? Thinking of a name can be tricky, because you want it to be so many things. Sometimes you can name it after the character or what they are going after. Like Harry Potter or Excalibur. Sometimes you can name it after the problem/conflict in the story. But usually the name has something to do with something in the story. Just say or write down all the things in your story and pick your favorite. At the end of the day, the comic will make the name great, the name will not make the comic great. So don't worry too much about the name. Just make sure the name isn't hard to spell, say, or read. if you are trying to make the logo, that's tough. Look at a bunch of other comics, get ideas. It's okay to be inspired. Sometimes I find it easier to draw the logo than find a font, there are so many fonts to look through. But if you do use a font, try to change it as much as you can, make the letters taller or fatter, move them around. Just so it doesn't look like you only typed it.

Hi, I'm a new subscriber and I really appreciate your truly helpful tutorials. I have a question about this template; I'm terrible at math, lol. I wanted to use this method for my webtoon because I believe it'll help me with the flow of the story (my first time creating a vertical comic) My question is, the dimensions I'm using are 2400px x 19200; would the dimensions you used work as well? Would I multiply 2400 x 5 to create the width of the page? I hope I asked that correctly; thanks in advance 🙂
@walterostlie
@walterostlie 4 года назад
Yes, it would be 12,000 x 19,200 . A really large file. Any reason you're drawing at 2400 px wide? I used to do 3300px wide, but realized that it was prolly way too big for no reason.
@Sammy_47
@Sammy_47 4 года назад
@@walterostlie hi, thanks for getting back to me. I'm using Webtoons format and I saw another tutorial saying to increase the size to add more details then decrease (I increased it 3x) once you're ready to split and post. I was going to work one sheet at a time, but having several makes more sense to me; it's hard to explain 😊
@ariahernandez4279
@ariahernandez4279 3 года назад
This was super helpful as I am starting my first comic! I have a couple questions though (if you're still active here). You mentioned 900 pixels wide for printing, but webtoon requires 800 pixel width for uploading, do you scale it down later? I've noticed a lot of creators draw their comics in bigger sizes than the webtoon upload size and it confuses me. Also is there a particular reason/benefit for drawing panels in that column grid you made instead of one really long strip?
@walterostlie
@walterostlie 3 года назад
Size is kinda weird. In the second to last video of this series, I show how to prep the file for upload and I use a website that cuts the image into small pieces and also shrinks it to 800px wide. The reason I did 900 for this video is because that is 3 inches of hi-res print resolution. Which would hopefully be enough resolution for a single panel if you decided to print it later. A lot of artists use even larger resolutions because they like to zoom in and add tiny details. Or because they want to make sure they have more options to print their panels extra large if needed (promo, posters, etc). However, the larger the file the more it will tax your computer and also will take up more space on your hard drive. every 300 pixels is an inch of hi-res print resolution. If you want super hi-res, then every 600px is one inch of super-hi-res print resolution. Drawing the comic in multiple columns allows me to see the entire comic on a single screen. So I can see if the panels are exciting, varied, that there is good storytelling. A long strip it can be hard to get an overall view of an episode.

Just curious, but why do you say that you can do more headshots on webtoon than in print format?
@walterostlie
@walterostlie 4 года назад
Hey, awesome question. Thanks for making me actually think about this and put it into words. I think there are few reasons... 1. Scrolling on webtoon means you usually won't see two panels next to each other, so you don't really notice the similarity of panels as you read. With traditional comics, you see all the panels at once, you would notice if they all looked the same and it wouldn't be a great looking page overall. This is the big reason why you can't use more headshots in Traditional comics. 2. Traditional comics have a finite amount of space, every panel/page is an extra amount of $$ to print. So having 100 pages of headshots wouldn't be a great use of page real estate. 3. webtoon readers have grown accustomed to more headshots. Traditional comics readers have grown accustomed to variation of panels. I guess this is a chicken or the egg situation. With Webcomics, creators tend to be making their comics during their free time, so they had to find ways to make comics faster. Drawing head shots are immensely quicker to draw than most other panels. I think readers have grown to accept this over time. 4. Webtoon is read via phone. It's a small screen. Details and huge epic environment drawings don't have the same impact. Close ups of emotion have a lot of punch on a small screen. 5. Larger text in Webtoon means you can't fit as much dialogue into a single panel. So drawing another headshot to hold the rest of the dialogue is fine because the reader will be paying attention to the dialogue and less so to the art. Traditional comics tend to have smaller font size, so they can't fit more text into a single panel. There are prolly other reasons, but these are the first to come to mind. I think it is also important to say that you can use a lot of headshots in traditional comics if you want. It could even look kinda cool to have a page of talking heads if you did it right, but it's not something you could do other and other in traditional comics before traditional comic readers noticed. And webtoons could use no headshots if they wanted as well.

@walterostlie

I am not sure what you mean? are you talking about comics that are created by placing 3d objects in a 3 dimensional environment, then taken a "photo" of the scene that was created for use in a sequential 2d static comic? Sorta like taking a CG movie like Frozen and using still images of that movie as comic book panels?

Guyss, if you work on ibispaintX from your phone you can do a 4000 x 3840 px canvas! And for the grid you can do 5 verical lines and 3 horizontal lines (to set the grid you go on filter > frame > table(count)) (i personally did the vertical and horizontal lines in 2 different layers). Then for the guide rectangle just add a new layer, pick a color , use the bucket to color one rectangle and then you can move it around how u want!(each section is gonna be 800×1280). Also i personally made a folder to keep these 3 layers in 😸😸

Very nice! I've been wanting to look at Ibis and a good method for it, but haven't had time. I was thinking the only way would just be to use a bunch of individual 800x1280 files. but that is cool that ibis can handle larger files.

Question: if someone creates a webtoon traditionally on paper 1) how can i create a manga panel? Can i do it by hand or not? Also what size must the panel be exactly? 2) when i finish creating a panel and draw a page ,is there a way i can convert the hand writing manga page to a file to my pc?
@walterostlie
@walterostlie 3 года назад
A panel is just a box shape or any shape containing a "panel" So there isn't a specific type of manga panel. You can just use a ruler to draw lines. There isn't a specific one panel size for all cases. You can think of the image you upload to Webtoon as being around 2.5 inches wide and a little over 4 inches tall. So you can divide a piece of paper into columns that size. Once you're down drawing, if you don't have a scanner to scan the drawing to your computer, you can take a photo with a camera and then use a free software to edit the image. Medibang, gimp, krita, etc

Question, if I want to hit both printed comic AND webtoon, which is better? Starting a webtoon format and changing it to regular comic format? Or the other way around?
@walterostlie
@walterostlie 4 года назад
That's tricky to answer and will depend a lot on your comic. If you are doing big action splash pages or double splash pages, focusing on print format will be better. If you comic is a little more calm, starting with either could be fine. If you want to focus mostly on Webtoon growth, using that format to it's full potential would be a good idea. Print is good for bold cinematic panels or splashes, that won't have as much impact when converted to webtoon. Webtoon is great for creating an immersive, seemless storytelling, which doesn't work or fit into a print page.
@Alshobbar
@Alshobbar 4 года назад
@@walterostlie Thank you for taking the time to give a clear and thorough reply. No huge splash pages, but true to what you said, directing it and leading the eye would drastically differ. I liked the way things pan out in webtoon format, there's no chance for the reader's eye to wander throughout the page and would be restricted to one event at a time. However and was thinking that in exhibitions I would have a better chance to market myself had i a few printed comics to sell rather than handing out flyers that I've a comic on webtoon. What are your thoughts about this?

whats up Walter I am in the process of creating a grahic novel but I notice webtoons has a different page lay out my page layout is from the American version of comic books pages if it possible to fit my panels fit in webtoons or I got to do it over again.
@walterostlie
@walterostlie 4 года назад
You can just upload your comic pages as you have them in american format, but it won't work perfect. The font is most likely going to be too small. The right way to do it is to copy your panels into a new file, and stack the panels on top of each other. Then bring your text layers over, but larger compared to the art. You'll have to make your lettering go outside the boxes since the are bigger and will no longer fit.

@walterostlie
@walterostlie 4 года назад
Did I say that? Thumbnails are the most important thing about comics, ever! Thumbnails are basically sketching your entire comic. This allows you to see if the art work is telling the story effectively, makes sure there are enough panels, see that the panels are varied and exciting. They do so much. It allows you to see your comic without have to do a lot of work, so you can quickly make changes. Very important.

I don't think you can do too much with those blue lines from the file in MediBang. They are pulled from the original photoshop file I created and then exported to Medibang. You can hide them though by going to view menu and turning off "guidelines" You can create our own guides in medibang by using "Snap" menu and parallel or by use "View" and grid settings. Hope that helps.

@walterostlie 3 года назад
So I am not sure what that webtoon preset from CSP is meant for, but you shouldn't use it for Webtoon. Webtoon has a requirement of 800 px wide. If you draw at 690px wide, your art is going to end up looking blurry or small on Webtoon. But you could still use the phone trick, it will won't be exactly correctly because of the size difference.
