HEY EVERYONE - I use 900px wide for my video. If you like to zoom in a lot or have hyperfine details, create a larger width, though I can't really imagine why you'd go any higher than 3300. 1600-2000 I imagine would be good enough for most art styles. Resolution is a weird concept. Remember 900px is the same quality as 3300px, it's just smaller. Like a piece of paper in real life. a post-it-note isn't lower resolution than notebook paper. Same thing with computers, you just have to do a lot more zooming in/out with larger canvases to make them fit on your screen. It's like looking at a piece of paper through a window. New video for the Make a Webtoon from Start to Finish series. The series is going to cover writing, thumbnails, penciling, inking, flatting, coloring, lettering, and uploading.
This tutorial is for digitally penciling, inking, and doing line work for a Webtoon episode, but the principles will translate to traditional art and comics.

if you upscale the width do you have to upscale the height as well or should it remain 4500px?

Hi, thank you so much for this video! I am using procreate. I have input all the sizes you suggested. I keep seeing others who use procreate use settings like 800x1250. Since you are using 900, does that mess with anything size wise when uploading?

I don't know if anyone else noticed but the fact that he put more effort into the establishing shot of the ship was a REALLY smart move. because once the viewer has the data they wont notice if you put less effort in for the rest of the scene, their imagination fills in all those gaps. It shows he knows what he's doing whether he notices why he's doing it or not.

CSP's panels are vectors so you can change the line width with the vector tool, same as you do with the word balloons. Great video btw
@walterostlie
@walterostlie 4 года назад
Can you make it vary the line weight across a single side and also give the line texture? That would be great
@kadazuro
@kadazuro 4 года назад
@@walterostlie yeah, you can do that, you can pick the brush you like with texture and whatnot then, go to edit > brush shape and register it. then on the panel border select that brush shape and use it for the border instead of the default one (under tool property > brush shape), and for making the border thicker just do as you do with the word balloons (correct line > correct line width), I can make a quick vid if you want. cheers.

For Clip Studio users: what helps me differentiate the layers, so I don't accidentally draw on the wrong one (done it tons of times) is color code them ( on the "layers tab" there's a color palette list that adds a color on the left side of the layer file). I use specific colors for different purposes: sketch (grey), lineart (red), coloring (green), chat bubble (white), text (black) etc. Great tutorial! I'm new to drawing in webtoon format and your videos gave me lots of ideas on how to start.

it's nice that in depth info is compact in a video so that I'm not sifting through too many videos; although, I don't mind sifting if the content I need is there. I appreciate the cohesion and explanations of this video series, specifically, the order of the topics and the explaining why you chose certain decisions. I do have to rewind at some parts because the info is shown or told too quickly, but I also have to do that because I'm still so unfamiliar with my program and industry(?) jargon. Your stuff is cool.

Two comments for the price of one. There are a lot of comics with Mark in the title, but I think I found the one with a book and unlimited powers. @walterostlie
@walterostlie 3 года назад
It's basically using the marquee select tool to select each individual column, then you copy the column, and then you paste it into a new file. This is basically breaking your columns into files so that you can work at a high resolution without overworking your computer. The "Actions" is a way to automate certain actions in ClipStudio. In this case I am recording the copy, paste, lower opacity, and layer rename actions into a ClipStudio "Action" so I can replay it for every column. The actions windows is in the lower right side, usually next to your layers. You'll see a little tab at the top of your layers, that you can click, one of them is actions. You don't need the action, you can manually copy and paste.

how can i maintain my comic character face in all style
@walterostlie
@walterostlie 4 года назад
You can do a character head turn around. Draw one version of your character's face. Draw horizontal lines across your page where your character has their top of their hair, hairline, eyes, bottom of the nose, mouth, chin. Then draw the head from the side(profile) and the front and slightly turned. Use those lines help you place those features and keep erasing/redrawing until it looks right in all 3 angles. Then pay attention of the distance between all those lines. Then when you draw the character in your comic, look at those 3 heads you drew and the distances, you should get close enough. Also make your characters look different from each other. this will help the reader quickly identify the character and you won't have to work as hard to make them always look perfectly the same.

@walterostlie
@walterostlie 4 года назад
Depending on how large your actually computer monitor screen resolution is, you may be zooming into the comic at over 100%. if you look at your art program, they usually tell you how much you're zoomed in. So if it's over 100% it will start getting blurry,pixelate, but that's just cause you're going over 100% zoom. but remember people don't read your webtoon over 100%. So... 2000px has same quality as 900px. If you look at each canvas on your screen...900 will take up half your screen. 2000 will take up your entire screen. It's a weird concept.

It is hard for beginners to draw fast. I wouldn't worry too much about it. Just draw at your speed. It's more important to be consistent with the amount of time you draw versus how much you can draw in that time. People tell me I draw really fast so don't use me as normal. However, you can only update your comic as fast as you draw, unless you draw all of it first and then start posting when you have a bunch of episodes already drawn.

Hi walter..I'm mania I wanted to ask for your advice .. It's been a year that I fell in love with my friend's writting so I told her that I wanted to draw her work, she was so happy about it .. but then in this one year I was busy with the studies so I couldn't start but it's not like i didnt try .. i tried but couldnt beacuz its a novel but i've just done real short stories like about 20 panels an ep in 3 eps so I'm really stressed and my art is not that developed so i have to really think and search for every panel, pose and perspective I dont want to disappoint her and her fans ... so I'm stuck and cant get myself to start drawing so what should I do?
@walterostlie
@walterostlie 4 года назад
Hey Mania. That is a really tough situation. I feel for you. When I did my first graphic novel I was very stressed, I wanted to stop working on it and never ever draw again. The way I got through it was to tell myself "if I finish this book, then I can stop drawing and never draw again" Of course, I finished it and kept drawing. So that is an option, but not really healthy. The second option is too take a short break from that story and do more quick practice stories. Get more comfortable. Look at other comic, use their composition, poses, layouts for reference and inspiration. Or you can continue working on this comic and just realize that you are getting better and better. You may never feel "ready" or "good enough" but the fact that you continue to work, learn, and overcome the stress and struggle is going to make you stronger. If you are feeling like your in a dark place or overwhelmed, please seek out someone to talk to. I also suggest working in small portions. Don't think about the long story. Just think about it in pages, just work on one page. Celebrate that page when you finish. It is a big deal. Congratulate yourself, then do the next page. One page is like one step at a time. Don't worry about the finish line, just keep walking. I like to trick myself when I don't want to draw. I tell myself that I only have to draw for 5 minutes, then I don't have to draw anymore that day. Usually once I start drawing I am fine. it's that fear of starting. So saying I only have to draw for 5 minutes is an easy promise to myself. Good luck, let me know if I can help with anything else.
