In this video i am turning a piece of birch wood into an eagle head wood carving. It was a fun project and i am pretty sure i will make another sculpture in my next art project!
State of the channel: I am at 13,000 subscribers right now, that is fantastic! thank you to all of you. I am able to reach my goal of making one new video a week at the moment and i have already started thinking about what to make in the next video. (i have a long term goal this year to reach 100,000 subscribers, but it will be a challenge)
I invested in some "super sculpey" clay yesterday and i am looking forward to try to sculpt some kind of fierce animal head out of that.
Tell me what you want to see me making in my next video and i will check it out.

Your Eagle head reminds me of a film where a modernistic gargoyle is high on a New York skyscraper, extremely stylish, and when you oiled the sculpture, Boy did that stand out, it is a fantastic looking image, you should be very proud of what you have achieved, as you said in your note to yourself " You are the Boss" !!! Looking forward to your next one Jonas, Cheers from John in England.

I like that you've added which materials/equipment you've used, and explained all the different steps while offering words of encouragement! I've always been nervous about carving 3D sculptures because to me, it just seems like "magic"...^-^' (P.s. I love the instruction manual XD)
@Jonasolsenwoodcraft
@Jonasolsenwoodcraft 6 лет назад
Thank you. a instruction manual is always nice to have xD Yeah well i want to kind of get across that it is a struggle for me to make a carving like this and that it takes a lot longer than what it looks like :). It can be hard not to get discouraged when you start off, but those who has become masters of something usually says that they regret not enjoying the journey to becoming that more :)

Hi jonas , I'm a new subscriber to your channel and I love what you do, outstanding👍. I've done some handcarving with gouges and knives, mainly Christmas themed caricatures , snowmen and santas !!!.. nothing up to your standard but I enjoy it. You have inspired me to branch out , I have a dremel and sanding drums and have just ordered some saburr tooth carbide burrs !!.. 👍👍👍 I always use lime for carving it carves very well . Any suggestions for other woods to use or avoid etc , any advice of any kind would be greatly appreciated 😁 Keep up the fantastic work. Regards , Trev
@Jonasolsenwoodcraft
@Jonasolsenwoodcraft 6 лет назад
Hello. well i am self tought and to be honest i am a pretty big noob at knowing which wood species are good and bad. i am only familiar with birch wood at the moment and that seem to work pretty well :) I have heard that saburr tooth burrs are very effective in removing wood quickly. The best advice i can give you is to pay attention to the designing phase and use a lot of time there :) Good luck

All these newfangled "handysaws" and whatnot. Not all of us can afford such fancy cordless devices. I bet it's the brushless version too. Anyhoo, you do a lot of Dremel-work. I was just wondering, have you looked into Foredoms or other foot pedal operated, heavier torque flex shafts? I decided to splurge on a Foredom a few years ago and the high torque comes in pretty handy, especially considering it allows using 6mm bits (you could even chuck a Kirjes sanding drum into one. *edit*: Of course the Kirjes comes with a flex shaft of its own, but it doesn't have a variable speed foot control). But what I find most handy (and actually almost decided not to get) is the foot pedal control. Of course being able to use it requires heavier torque than a regular Dremel has, but it gives an extra layer of finesse to the whole carving process. Considering the type of work you do, I would think it'd come in quite handy. Of course it comes with a price, but for example the larger Dremel unit and others aren't as expensive as a Foredom.
@Itslvle
@Itslvle 6 лет назад
Also the end result came out really well (just like all your work really :D ). Being just a passable/ok drawer it's strange to me that people can visualize carvings better by drawing them from different angles before the carving process. For me it's much easier to draw a side view and carve out the rest in 3D rather than drawing a 3D object from my mind to 2D and transferring it back to 3D.

The frustrating thing is I don't have a shed or a workshop so do it all in my room at my desk but the dust is a real pain. I was thinking of making a Perspex box with 2 armholes sort of like a sandblasting box that would contain the dust so I could just vacuum it up later on. I have C.O.P.D. so wood dust is a real issue & some hardwoods can be toxic. It could work I suppose? Cheers anyway J.

This is how you approach an intricate carving boys and girls... The more info you have to the subject you are carving, the better it is going to be. This should be watched by those that say 'just send me a pic and i'll make a bust'. Seen those type end in disaster.

I love your work it is very unique,clean and detailed!! I have recently been very inspired by your videos into wood carving ,(nothing special yet) and I was thinking about getting the same Dremel and cable attachment as yours,but I am a bit concerned about losing a finger or two.. 😅( I haven't had any experience in using a Dremel before)But as I see you in your videos you seem in complete control (experience I quests..) Please can you tell me if the equipment you are using is ideal for a person who is just getting into poer wood carving?Is there something I should be conserned about? Do you have any suggestions for begginers?Was there something that you found difficult to master?? PS: Congratulations on hitting 13.000 subscribers and keep making beautiful art and videos, you really inspire some people!!! 😊😊😊

Thank you so much for this comment. it means a lot :) A dremel is fairly safe to work with, but you can get some injuries on your hands if you are careless. i have cut myself a few times, but it is not deep cuts and it is just small injuries that heals quickly. However it is very important to wear eye protection and a dust mask. :) and it depends on what kind of material you are working with, i am only familiar with wood.

I love his design so much, my grandfather does metal casting of his art and as a kid my favorite was his eagle head (which I know own 1 of 50) But it's incredible to how reminiscent your design his to his work. Your work is incredible, thank you for filming everything!
