I have wanted to make a useless box for years and when James from Greenhill Graphics asked to do a colab I knew just the project. This box is made from white oak, product, and Walnut. some people call it a useless box, worthless box, on of box or switch box. this is a quick project that most people can make in there workshop in a weekend making a good hand tool only woodworking project.

Wrong name for these boxes, pointless or worthless? It's like the word nothing there is always something, pointless it does something and worthless then you are certainly wrong, as the hours and skill and pleasure of building a beautiful box that will give you and who ever plays with it pleasure for years to come. Great video!! and it nice to see a fellow woodworker who still uses older style tools and skills.

They're usually called useless boxes. but that being said I decided to title it differently due to Google's search algorithm. It has helped out greatly. And because of that more people have been able to see the video.

Wonderful work, my friend. I don't know about you, but personally, I find sawing open the lid of a box to be the single most terrifying task in all of woodworking.

That is cool... I was thinking how cool would be to have a little LED light come on inside the box and the little finger turning it off... LOL! BUT over all the build and fine details of the box outstanding.

I thought about carving a little hand on the end of an arm that comes out and pushes it off then adding a little sound effective some gremlin.

I just found this channel... and already I feel really ignorant... Why is this box 'useless' or worthless? To me it looks like any other box.... just a whole lot nicer than most... (beside the silly mechanics inside) Paddy

Is it cheating to cut pockets on a milling machine? Sometimes I'll clean the mill marks out with a chisel. I square the corners with a chisel too. So that makes it handmade, right?

I've never seen anyone use blue painter's tape like this. Thanks for the idea. I'll look forward to giving it a try. I know there is also green tape called Frogs Tape. Do you know what you can use Frog Tape for? Taping frogs! Next time I'll tell you about Turtle Wax. 8^) Thanks for the good videos you do.

Do you have videos showing the substitutes for mechanical tools to hand tool approach? ie a bandsaw can be swapped for a bow saw etc

I use bevel down ant time that bevel up can not reach the work, or any time I want more control. in most traditions bevel down was used more then bevel up as it gives more control to the woodworker.

How come you don't screw the hinge down before you scribe it? The holes shouldn't move on you and screwed down the leaf won't move either. Two words, Vix bit. It makes getting the screws for hinges dead on easy. I remember life before I had a Vix bit. It's better now.

Thanks. In fortunately with hand tools I don't think there is a way to make it profitable without going really high-end! Apparently one of the henges got bent in shipping.
