Hand Tools Only: Dovetail Box Made with ZERO Electricity

I shaved a few cents off of my electric bill by using only hand tools to build this cherry dovetail box to hold my chisels. It only took me about ten times longer to make. Worth it!
I don't think a woodworker is defined by whether they use only hand tools, some power tools, or even a CNC to build their projects, but I do think that every woodworker should have at least some hand tool experience. It's a little slower, but if done properly it's more precise, and the satisfaction you get from building something the same way it would have been built 200 years ago is immense.

Getting into woodworking but enjoy not using power tools.. realizing how important and difficult it is to get a good hand plane.. any recommendations would be appreciated for someone with one funky block plane
@dkbuilds
@dkbuilds 2 года назад
I started by buying planes at yard sales and trying to fix them up, and to be honest it never really worked out for me. My planes are WoodRiver planes which are decently expensive but are not as expensive as the very top of the line planes out there. The WoodRiver #5 1/2 was the first plane I bought that made me realize using hand tools can be super enjoyable when you have tools that work well. I would recommend WoodRiver highly, and also checking out some videos (maybe by Rob Cosman, Paul Sellers, others) about sharpening by hand. I have been using a cheap two-sided whet stone off of amazon for several years that gets my tools more than sharp enough (and I flatten the stones with a cheap diamond plate off Amazon too).

Beautiful process and immensely satisfying (for you and the viewer). I love to work "without electricity" but it does have its problems. A cedar cot I was building this way - 88 mortise/tenon joints, 4 bookmatched panels etc., all hand cut, sanded to 2000 etc. and our son arrived 2 weeks early, well before it was finished. My wife bought me a Festool Domino system to avoid it happening again. Not long after, I was building a set of built-in drawers, all hand-cut dovetails, blind/half-blind and loving the process. My wife must have missed me on those lonely nights while I was happy in my shop so she bought me a Leigh dovetail jig system. I love to hand-thickness, sand to a polish and take my sweet time finishing my projects. Another pair of bedside tables was taking a little longer than my girl wanted, so she bought me a helical thicknesser. I'm currently working as slowly as I can on some hand-cut "bandsaw boxes" as I don't have a bandsaw... :-) Cheers and thanks from Sydney - Dave

I took this vo-tech class in high school, woodworking. I took a lot of vo-tech classes, because it was just big jerk-off, but this one time I had this teacher by the name of... Mr... Mr. Pike. I guess he was like a Marine or something before he got old. He was hard hearing. My project for his class was to make this wooden box. You know, like a small, just like a... like a box, you know, to put stuff in. So I wanted to get the thing done as fast as possible. I figured I could cut classes for the rest of the semester and he couldn't flunk me as long as I, you know, made the thing. So I finished it in a couple days. And it looked pretty lame, but it worked. You know, for putting in or whatnot. So when I showed it to Mr. Pike for my grade, he looked at it and said: "Is that the best you can do?" At first I thought to myself "Hell yeah, bitch. Now give me a D and shut up so I can go blaze one with my boys." I don't know. Maybe it was the way he said it, but... it was like he wasn't exactly saying it sucked. He was just asking me honestly, "Is that all you got?" And for some reason, I thought to myself: "Yeah, man, I can do better." So I started from scratch. I made another, then another. And by the end of the semester, by like box number five, I had built this thing. You should have seen it. It was insane. I mean, I built it out of Peruvian walnut with inlaid zebrawood. It was fitted with pegs, no screws. I sanded it for days, until it was smooth as glass. Then I rubbed all the wood with tung oil so it was rich and dark. It even smelled good. You know, you put nose in it and breathed in, it was... it was perfect.

Same boat for me! It's been a couple years at this point, but I don't always have a lot of time to spend in my shop, so it's still only been a few projects... Started with a (very) small workbench. Dovetail recipe card box (double dovetails), a cribbage board (I had some fun with it and used a woodburning tool to make a celtic weave around the border), and a magnetic knife strip made to just look like a board on the wall are a few of the other projects i've completed. And the most fun and important on for me so far - my sister's fiancee asked if I would make a box for the engagement ring. I used lumber from a walnut tree that grew in our grandparents' back yard. The inside cushion is lined with leather, the top is secured by magnets instead of being hinged, and the space where the box and lid meet is padded with leather as well. Hand tool woodworking is one of the few things I've found that's relaxing and calming all while being labor intensive enough to break a sweat at times... The perfect mix of detailed precision work and creative, artistic design process... I wish I would've discovered this when I was a kid.

Love the videos. My grandfather and his father were both into carpentry. Not masters or anything, but I was always impressed with what they built. I tried it for a semester in high school but it didn't really click. I'm wanting to give it another shot, but always feel discouraged when I think of my lack of space and funds for expensive tools. Was really nice seeing you build something simple yet beautiful with just your hands and basic tools, and I think that's just the sort of reminder I needed.

That’s a fantastic question! Pull saws are cheaper, and have a thinner kerf because the metal blade is pulled into tension as you cut. Good question! I was basically trying something new with shellac. Paul Sellers (who I took this box design from) uses a lot of shellac so I gave it a shot. The honing guide is sold at WoodCraft, and the two grits are 1000 and 6000 (bought the stone cheap off Amazon years ago and it's still working great!)

If I may ask a stupid question, what is the toor used at 05:49 and what does it do (the rod with a metal circle on it)? Great video, thanks!
@dkbuilds
@dkbuilds 2 года назад
That's not a stupid question at all! That is a marking gauge. The metal circle is a cutting blade -- you drag the marking gauge along the side of a piece of wood and the circle cuts a tiny groove into the wood at a consistent distance to the edge (parallel to the edge).
@LeKrumbs

Make one side very flat, then use a marking gauge to draw a line parallel to that side, then slowly and carefully use a hand plane to get exactly down to that line.

@dkbuilds
@dkbuilds 4 года назад
Thanks Jason! Hmm I haven't had any issues actually. What kind of issues are you having? Rob Cosman has some videos about what to do to tune up a new WoodRiver plane out of the box. I personally haven't had to do anything to mine besides sharpen the blade and close down the throat a little by adjusting the frog.
@jasonzvokel6317
@jasonzvokel6317 4 года назад
@@dkbuilds i can't open the throat wide enough to get any substantial shavings. It's great for smoothing, but that's it. I tried moving the frog, but the thickness of the blade keeps the throat very tight. I'll figure it out eventually
