Making a Wrap-Around Ring: A Silversmithing Tip

This tutorial shows how to create one nice variation of a bypass ring.
For this one, I bezel-set a 7 mm Swiss Blue Topaz for a stunning centerpiece to a classic ring design. I would categorize this as an intermediate project. The materials I used were: 18 gauge sterling round wire, 10 gauge sterling square wire, and 3/16 inch fine silver bezel strip in 26 gauge. As always, I am using Hard silver sheet solder, and My-T-Flux from Rio Grande. This tutorial features the steps to making a bezel for a faceted stone as well.
I enjoy sharing my knowledge with others, as I've taught people for most of my life. This hobby turned into a fun side gig for me for years while I taught public school. I love suggestions and hearing about others' experiences. What is your favorite project? What kind of tutorials would you find useful? Scroll down for information on my new Patreon!

Beautiful ❤️ I made a ring similar to that where it wraps around but instead of cupping the centre stone, I twisted the ends outwards after wrapping around. I don't make many rings as I find I really struggle with them but this is so beautiful I think I will have to put my fears aside and give it a go 😊 Thank you for a grate tutorial xx

Hi Chad, love your ingenuity. I've found if I bend the curves before cutting the exta length off, I can get a greater rounded (& easier) effect. Necessity is the mother of invention after all.

I always find your videos interesting Im not sure I have the strength you do. That being said would it be any easier to use round wire? Of course the ends would be more pointed, Beautiful ring
@chadssilversmithing
@chadssilversmithing 8 месяцев назад
Hello Verda. You could probably use round wire instead; it’ll just have a little different look. You might try doing some of the shaping while it is still attached to a longer piece, as that will give you some bending leverage, and then cut it to length:)

Chad question for you. First i do not have a mill to flatten the ends. So for those who don’t have a mill what do you think about hand forging the end? I know it stretched the metal so one would want to use a much shorter piece and hand forge then file and smooth? What do you think?
@chadssilversmithing
@chadssilversmithing Год назад
Absolutely. Hammering something works pretty well too:)

Could you have bent the wire first then flatten with a file? Beautiful ring.

That would likely work:)
