The movie was so absorbing. You felt you were there on No Mans Land. It was awful stomach and felt so realistic. Great perspective from director. It is absolutely terrifying. It is no wonder that war torn surviving soldiers suffered PTSD etc. Every soldier on all sides of the battle endured this terror. I had to avert my eyes at times as was so bloody, but this is the reality of war. This continues today. Extremely educational and made the viewer think that every soldier was simply fodder for the war effort. This war simply eradicated thousands of fathers, sons, uncles and nephews, etc. Same goes on today (2023) in Ukraine and Afghanistan to name but a few. Great direction, cinematography, production, setting and costumes, and the music was so eerie and cleverly scored. The actors immersed you in their roles in the war front. Just simply emotional and at the same time, so sad.

Unbelievable film. I don't believe there has been a film that depicts the horror of war like this one does. Of course Saving Private Ryan comes to mind, but this one let's you in closer to the terror the soldiers experienced, up close and personal. From the idealism of these young men as they enlist, to the disappointment, sadness, shock and horror they experienced once they realize what they have gotten into, and witnessing their fiends/comrades die in battle. It's an impressive piece of film making, a masterpiece for the ages. It is a shame it was not shown in theaters here in the US, unless it was and I missed it.

@dms-f16
@dms-f16 Год назад
@@allanredhill8682 Yes, All Quiet doesn't frame war in any "grand scheme" or soliders doing a "righteous sacrifice". It shows the battlefield for what it is: a brutal place where humanity dies. The movie follows a soldier. There is nothing special about the soldier except for the fact that this main character not only represents all German soldiers, but all soldiers that experience the horror of war. This movie was an absolute masterpiece.
@dynamo1796
@dynamo1796 Год назад
You make an excellent point here actually. Several war films (even where anti-war) make out the key protagonists as these greater characters - they are somehow empowered and emboldened by the story and we get the sense that they're a little bit untouchable by the events around them.1917 suffers this to some effect, Saving Private Ryan is very affected by this and in many ways some classics like A Bridge Too Far are also a little disconnected. All Quiet On The Western Front however is quite the opposite. The main character could be any of the other lads in his regiment, he represents them but is not made more powerful by it - he is just as frail and disposable as the others and (of course he is killed in the end). It does a great job of zooming into the life of one particular soldier, but does not elevate that soldier for it. When you zoom back out, you see hundreds of Pauls running, fighting and dying all across the field of battle. Its just so striking and unnerving in many ways, but this film is a true masterpiece and a piece of history for the ages.

My paternal grandfather fought in WWI, either shell shock or an underlying psychiatric disorder he was catatonic in a VA hospital at the end of the war. His brother's had to search for him. He spent the rest of his life in and out of state mental hospitals. He died before I was born, but his parents and siblings immigrated from Bern Switzerland. He was very artistic, I have a wood carving and a couple paints he did and he hoped to study art. However his mother who seemed old world Swiss, made him drop out of school and work at age of 12. Watching that movie made me understand why and how he lost his mind in the trenches. When my dad went to war in WWll my grandfather was terrified my father would be killed. My grandmother and aunt kept a lot of news about my dad from him.

A tremendous effort by so many talented and dedicated people. I saw the movie several weeks before seeing this video and it gave an added dimension to my experience. Thank you to all involved, behind and in front of the cameras. I feel the timing was also poignant given the fact Ukraine is currently defending itself against a Russian invasion. It causes me to reflect on the horrors they must be going through at this time. Just as an aside; I so admire Europeans who have learned languages so well - I have French and English but I would really like to speak German. Some work to do there LOL

I can't bear to watch the movie because it is so brutal and the fact that this really happened and is based on real events is terrifying and horrible to me. But I'm glad I got some insights with this short making of. This way I could bear the sights without being too absorbed by the story. I'm gonna read the book though. I don't know why I haven't heard about it before because I am German but in school we've never talked about this once and it actually took this huge movie that is now known worldwide for me to hear about this so very important anti-war book.

This became a factor for me to backout from joining the armed forces. There is no glory in wars, and taking the lives of other human beings. I respect the ones who served in the war, the greatest generation indeed but it should be a lesson for mankind. Hollywood is a sham for portraying wars as something that it is not. In my opinion this movie is the closest portrayal of what war really is. Don't let the egoistical leaders make a fool out of you and make you think that you're serving and dying for your country whereas what you're actually dying for is resources and land.

My great Uncle Harold Holcomb, was in WWI as a soldier in the USArmy Medical Corp. He somehow survived being gassed. Lung problems ensued but he came home. He married six times. I often wonder what part the war played in his restlessness to continue to move on. He was even a cowboy In Buffalo Bills Wild West Show. Many that did come home had physical disfigurements and mental conditions. He was a lucky one and had a good life still after the war.

They should've given the film a different title. Many important sections from the book are missing (school, boot camp, Paul visits his village incl. school and family), others added like the peace negotiations in the train or the final attack plus the "wrong" death. I read the novel and watched the film from 1931 and must say it was difficult for me to identify the plot. Only the names of the characters remained untouched.

A bit nerving seeing what my great grandad had to endure shortly there after in 1918 and how close I was to not being here today because of it. Running toward MG fire, hand to hand combat with knuckle knives. He came home. A purple heart and silver citation later. 30 years old at the time, established attorney, professional football player. Certainly don't make em' like that anymore.
