I think every man should mirror polish an ax bit at least once in his lifetime. Teaches u a lot. The feel of the metal when polished like that is hard to describe. The edge becomes very sharp too and the whole thing then feels dangerous to handle as it's so silky.

Lol he is literally using a power sander 😂 it doesn't get much *_quicker_* than that, bud. Try achieving a mirror like finish on carbon steel while only utilizing sheets of we or dry sand paper and a lot of elbow grease and *_then_* come back here to bitch about how much *_time_* it took 🙄

I do this with knives, by hand, going up to .5 micron jewelers paste. 70-80 hours per blade.
@pooder53
@pooder53 7 месяцев назад
70 to 80 hours for a sigle blade?! Do you take a 15 minute break between each pass? 🤣 I mean, hand sanding is a long and tedious process, but 70-80 hrs?! I don't know what your sanding process consists of, but I think it's safe to say it's wildly inefficient. It really shouldn't take someone more than 4 to 8 hours.

What if the thing you want to make shiny is an old iron scimitar that has very intricate designs on the metal? I just got all the rust off of it, and now it's a very dark gray. Should I just start with a finer sandpaper?
@ball751
@ball751 7 месяцев назад
If it doesn't have very deep scratches then you could probably start with like a 600 grit or something. Just be patient, it takes forever

Does a mirror finish help prevent rust on high carbon steel?
@vulgardisplayoftruth2060
@vulgardisplayoftruth2060 Год назад
No, there are different steels that are more resistant to rust than other's but rust is caused by oxidation. To keep it from rusting you can add a clear coat, oil your tools, keep away from moisture to the best of your ability, dry immediately if possible or you can use your imagination to come up with something as well that will work for you. H1, ceramic, stainless steel, aluminum, titanium, gold, silver and polymers are all considered more rust resistant materials that are used with knives.

Why did you not start at 40 grid and then 60, 80, 100, 120 , 150, 180, 220, 240, 360, 400, 600, 800, 1000, 1500, 2000, 3000 ? Wouldn’t it be easier? I’m also busy with and axe head at the moment to get it to a mirror polish it’s my 2nd one but this one just feels a little more difficult than the first one so mybe you could give me some pointers please ?

No reason to. That small of a difference won’t effect it that much. He skipped from 400 to 1000, and I personally would have gone to 600. I am a beginner as well.
