My name is Lucy, I'm a Dutchwoman here to offer an alternative approach to beauty.
On this channel I do mostly hair tutorials where I show you how to braid, pin and style your own hair. I recreate hairstyles from movies, tv shows or history and I regularly come up with my own, which I love to share with you!
I really enjoy diving into history to find out how women went about their beauty and dressing rituals in days past. Vintage and history-themed videos are my little passion project.
You'll find a bit of lifestyle content here as well, ranging from cozy chats over a cup of tea (my beloved Tea Time videos) to personal vlogs and home & interior videos.
Enjoy browsing!

I decided last year I wanted to make rat out of my own hair so I could get the color match right. I collected all my fall outs in box. Cut to when my boyfriend was cleaning out the closet and found my...collection. Oh the screams.

Oh, yeah, people have been wearing wigs and extensions for literally thousands of years! They just always try to make it look like their own, so you don't hear a newscaster or Egyptian or 18th century nobleman or civil war wife or actress on the red carpet broadcasting the fact that it's not all their own hair. :)

wow that looks heavy. what my grandma used to do was to stuff an old pantihose with the hair she collect from her brushes. I’ve had my grandmother’s Bakelite vanity set for some time. I always assumed that the round lidded object with a hole in the center of the lid was for powder or hair pins. Nope, I think it’s a hair receiver. I’d never heard of this before, so it led to my learning about the creation of hair rat(t)s. Your video came up in my search, and it was very informative. Thank you for it!

My grandmother wore the Gibson girl up do when she was a young woman, and yes she made rats from her own hair cleaned from her brush/ comb I think she used hair nets to make the rolls. At that time she had thick and extremely long hair, but having a rat made everything simpler and she could have a full pouf and a huge bun at the crown. I believe she preferred a figure eight. Unfortunately when she had one of oldest children she had what they called milk forever - a high fever and a lot of her hair fell out... So in the 1920's "marcell" wave on short bobbed hair was in she embraced that look. She had been quite good at putting up her long thick locks, but never did master doing short hair dos herself, Lol.
@leslyjmoore
@leslyjmoore 3 года назад
Sharon laFerry, I could have written that about my own grandmother! 🥰. Her hair was the colour of a new penny, thick and dead straight, and she could sit on it. She went for a Marcel wave, which was not well received by my grandfather! Anyway, she had the long hair made into a “switch” where the cut ends were twisted very tightly into a tiny loop for pinning in. It lived in her dressing table drawer, carefully wrapped in tissue, and I loved to stroke it, wishing that my hair wasn’t brown.

Just remembered: my grandfather died very suddenly when Nanny was just forty. Within six months, her hair turned pure white.

I am almost 56 years old and when I was younger (preteen) I was trying to recreate some of the styles my grandmother had worn in her old photos and asked her why even though I had very long and thick hair I couldn't make my hair look like her pictures. She blew my mind by saying "We used a rat." I asked her what it was and she said they saved all the hair from their hair brush and made a "rat" that they added to over time and used it as a fake roll to pin in their hair to add shape and volume where needed. I hope this helps. I have been saving mine for the last three years hoping to find a tutorial on how to make one especially since my hair has been falling out and getting much thinner since having covid.

I use the modern hair doughnuts for 18th century to get a front pouf, I bought 2 cut them open (so that the doughnut becomes a straight stick shape) and stitched the ends together to make a long tube. For an Edwardian ring you'd probably need 3 and then just sew them all together to make a giant doughnut.

In many antique vanity sets from that era, there will be a dish that has a lid with a hole in it. This is called a hair receiver. One would take the hair that was gathered in the brush & put it in the receiver. I was told as a girl that the hair was used for pin cushions because the natural oils in the hair would keep the pins in good condition. But, obviously, the hair could be used for the hair rat too!
