Have you ever wondered how the Enigma machine worked, and how it was built?
In this video, I show how I built a crypto/ cipher machine based on the Enigma machine, used in WW2, and explain how it works.
It was built in 2017 as a school project when I was 13 years old.

When I was 13, there were no "laser cutters" or CAD files... We were lucky to find a sharp rock to sharpen our spears!! Well done you! Lots of problems to solve and lots of solutions found! That's what it's all about!! Sincere congratulations for completing your version of Enigma.

@izaakc

very good! The only mistake is that two lights glow when a button is pressed. If you had used SPDT switches, you could have overcome this issue. Also, only prototype enigmas had numbers on the rotors, you should have had letters. But otherwise, an amazing build! Keep up the good work.

Could you tell me the method you used to reliably line up every of the connections in between the rotors? I can see some springs, but is that all there is to it? How did you get all of those springs to line up with the other nodes and establish a connection so well?
@whysecundaria1427
@whysecundaria1427 2 года назад
I think you can use alluminum sheet to make contact on one side and a metal being pushed by a spring, i would not use personally a spring by itself to avoid slip out of the connector. But this is a simplified enigma, there is two key factors missing: The manual letter changes at the front part of the enigma, that can make a final swap between 2 letters from your choice And the cogweel movement on the rings to make the order more randomic.

Hello! I didn't used a 3D printer, I used a laser machine. I have the plans, but these take into consideration the thickness of the wood and the size of the buttons and LEDs, which could differ, meaning that the plans should be modified. Besides, they are very simple and the plans without the dimensions appear along the video, so you could easily copy them. I don't have the wiring diagram of this machine (we wired it ramdomly), but you can find the wirings of the original Enigmas in Cryptomuseum.

Without the plugboard this machine is incredibly easy to break.
@AndyHawkeye007
@AndyHawkeye007 4 года назад
Perhaps easy, but not incredibly easy to break. It is true that what I've built only has 17,576 combinations, a very low number of combinations and incredibly unsafe in modern terms, but in order to break it you would first have to either know or deduce the rotor wiring (which I'll acknowledge that a computer can do that, but it would take a long time to deduce it). Anyway, previous Enigma, such as the K, or the ones Germany sold to Italy, Spain and Japan, also didn't have a plugboard. While I would have loved to include a plugboard, I just simply didn't have the time and money to include it.

Hi Andrew! I've just seen the video and it was absolutely amazing! I'm writing to you because I'm currently on my final school project, here in Spain we call it "Research Work" (Trabajo de recerca). I'm doing the project about the criptography, and I nees to do a practical part, so finding and finding I found that video, and I'm interested in trying to build a machine like yours. But first, I need to know what your budget was, how many time did you have to build the machine and finally, if it is very difficult to reach your result? I'm 17 and I don't have many idea of programming, so I'm a bit lost of how and where to start. It would be amazing and I would be so glad if you could write me back and talk a little bit, and if possible, to keep in touch so this way u could help me and advise me. Thanks for everything!
@AndyHawkeye007
@AndyHawkeye007 4 года назад
Hola! Budget was roughly 50 euros, excluding laser fees. We had one month (I think), 2 hours working in the school workshop and some time working in my own workshop. The result wasn't all that difficult to reach, except for the fact we had to learn to solder. It can be a bit tedious, but it was fun to do because it was a grupal project. Don't worry if you don't know programming, this project doesn't us programming at all. It's all electromechanical, so no need of programming. If you are serious about this, I'd suggest using pogo pins instead of what I did for connecting the rotors. Any doubts you may have, or if you're seeking for advice, please comment down here.

@AndyHawkeye007 4 года назад
@@eloitejedor6584 No, the pogo pins would be for connecting the rotors between themselves and allow movement. We acquired everything ourselves. From memory, we needed roughly 30 meters of wire, 26 LEDs and push-buttons, a toggle switch, battery pack wood and a metal sheet and springs (for connecting the rotors between themselves, this is the bit I'd replace with pogo pins. It's what the real thing had and what we would have liked to include had if they hadn't gone over overbudget. Hello. It's laser cut, so there wasn't any need of creating a 3D model. I may or may not have it in Corel Draw, but that's not terribly useful if what you have is a 3D printer (I assume that's what you have given that you ask for an STL file). However, it was easy to design and probably just about anyone with basic knowledge on designing in any software can replicate it perfectly. But any doubts or advice that you want, please ask!

@AndyHawkeye007
@AndyHawkeye007 3 года назад
Hello there! Yes, that is indeed not how the machine worked, but you will notice that one of the bulbs that lights up is the key you press, so there's no real room for confusion as to which letter is the coded one, as a letter cannot be coded as itself. To avoid this, we could have used SPDT switches, but those are considerably more expensive than regular buttons and because budget was a very serious issue we couldn't use them.

@user-ep7hw1oo1v

A pathetic imitation! The original encryption machine had code disks that rotated by 1 position with each press, and additionally had manual switches. The same text was encrypted differently for different units. As a result, different radiograms were sent, but the German fascists were given the same order. This made decryption much more difficult, but did not save the Germans from defeat by the Soviet Union!
