I’ve used castor oil. Anyone ever tried with magnesium oil?? Thank you for a simple demonstration. Exactly what I needed. 👍👍
@SmallHouseFarm

Glad you enjoyed it! I have not used magnesium oil.. but since it's not a true oil, I imagine it wouldn't work as well for making a salve.
@shineon651

Thank you. What do you think about infusing with magnesium oil? I use a mix of castor, coconut and magnesium daily as my body oil. I was thinking why not infuse a good herb. Think it would work? Got any herb suggestions if you do? Thanks for letting me pick your brain. Lol. :) Maybe throw a root in to brew?
@SmallHouseFarm
@SmallHouseFarm 11 месяцев назад
@@shineon651 you'd want to infuse the herbs in the castor and/or coconut oil and then add the magnesium afterwards.. rose petals might be a nice choice!

This was a great and very helpful video. Can you share the amount of jars that the recipe was able to fill, please?
@SmallHouseFarm
@SmallHouseFarm 3 месяца назад
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it! The ratio of oil to beeswax that we share in the video will make about 18 ounces of salve. In the video we are using 1oz. containers, so we'll end up with 18 salves, but you can use containers of any size!

Do you have a recipe for poppy seed ointment for use on wounds, cuts and scrapes ?
@SmallHouseFarm
@SmallHouseFarm 3 месяца назад
I do not have a specific recipe for poppy seed ointment although we do use freshly pressed poppy seed oil in some of our recipes. Common herbs for cuts and scratches include plantain, yarrow and comfrey!

What kind of oils can be used? Can I use olive oil?
@SmallHouseFarm
@SmallHouseFarm 26 дней назад
You can certainly use olive oil.. or any oil that you'd like. We often use sunflower oil or hempseed oil in our salves. We press our own oils here on the farm.. You might enjoy our book about seed & nut oils.. www.smallhousefarm.com/product/complete-guide-seed-and-nut-oils/

I was always told not to press the marc if you've used fresh herbs (as opposed to dried) as it will introduce the water from the plant into the mix - rancidity, bacteria, etc. concerns. You didn't discuss differences/preferences for dried vs. fresh herbs. What is your take on this?
@SmallHouseFarm
@SmallHouseFarm Год назад
This is an awesome question! If you're infusing fresh herbs in oil, you've already introduced water into the mix, whether you press the marc or not. Aside from a few exceptions, I alway recommend using dry herbs when working with oil, or at least wilted!

Do you have to dry the things you collect first or can you use them fresh?
@SmallHouseFarm

I recommend drying the herbs before infusing them in oil.
@katejudson8907

you can infuse them immediately after collecting according to other herbalists.

Garlic, lemon, oranges … pick something and look up what it’s healing properties are. Then make a tincture or tea. That’s the simplest way to start. RU-vid university can teach you a lot! 😁✌️

Is there a downside to doing a quick infusion using a crockpot? Is one better than the other?
@SmallHouseFarm
@SmallHouseFarm 2 года назад
The crockpot method works just fine if you need to make an infused oil in a hurry. And its ideal for infusing things like cottonwood buds...but I prefer the more hands-off approach of room-temperature oil infusion.

Hi Lyna! You can often find funnels just like ours through home-brewing equipment suppliers. There's a number of such suppliers online so a similar funnel should pretty easy to find! :)

Don't you have to sterilize it so that anaerobic bacteria doesn't become an issue?
@SmallHouseFarm
@SmallHouseFarm Год назад
Are you asking about sterilizing the container? The containers that we use are brand new.. and its important to note that beeswax acts as a preservative and is itself quite antibacterial. It suppresses the growth of both aerobic and anaerobic bacteria.
