You done it wrong! You don't put just the Shield to Earth at one end you do both ends to eliminate EMI RF interference is the proper way and only way. if you only going to do one end you do the component end not the socket end. And really you only need to shield the positive wire terminal the negative doesn't need to be shielded it's shielded already
