Making an Outlander-Inspired Outfit || I think I just want to be Claire Fraser

You know how I've been struggling to find my personal style? Well, it turns out it only takes one photo to completely shift your thinking and send you into a pit of inspiration. I saw one photo of Claire Fraser from Outlander and knew I wanted to try to make my own version. I self-drafted an apron and gave it a fun little tea dye bath, then worked on a belt that I think even a highlander would appreciate.
Luckily, past me had almost finished a pair of short Winslow culottes that worked perfectly for the bottom half of the outfit.
I'm currently binge watching old seasons of "Outlander" so make sure you subscribe so you get the next wave of historical Scottish/English/American sewing content as soon as it drops. Until then my friends...

There's this term in the historical costuming community used to describe something that's historical feeling, but can be worn out and about: "historybounding". This totally fits that perfectly.

That's the exact right term and I can't believe I didn't remember before! Thank you for the reminder!

They are pretty awesome pants! And I definitely maybe want to call them pantaloons. I know that's not what they are, but I can call my pants whatever I want because I'm definitely an adult! 🤣

I mean what’s not to love about Claire? She’s amazing. And also she’s not 25 and I often feel the same…like I want to find what’s actually me but all the best examples are on the bodies of women my daughters’ ages. This is epic. I may make that apron. I’ve been wanting one too. Your channel was a RU-vid suggestion today. Subscribed. ❤

Great outfit! You did an awesome job. I have been sewing for years and I still don’t have the perfect look. But I really enjoy the process of improving with each thing I make. It is important to me even if I am the only one who ever sees the finished item.

Great job finding clothes you truly feel comfortable in! You might want to look into making an apron out of drop cloth fabric rather than a bed sheet. It may stand up to frequent use better.
@KatieMakesStuff
@KatieMakesStuff Год назад
I've thought about that, especially for heavier uses, like when I make shoes. This will work for lighter projects but a drop cloth is a great idea!

Regarding the low-cut bodices, then yes they did exist, but it was indoor evening wear, and mainly for the rich. It is like wearing a cocktail dress and heels to the supermarket. Most of the time people would wear an array of garments that covered up their cleavage. They chose for her (and many other women in many other movies) to wear lower cuts than was used, or lower cuts than people used in everyday Iife, simply because a trope of any historical movie is that the audience should have boobs to look at.

My god..Im the same Im 64 and still dont really have a particular style, im ecclectic with clothes and home decorating. Hippy, boho, gothic, western, biker, fitted Jackets etc.. My wardrobe is 70% black lol, then theres the plums, purples, deep greens. So hard to know what i fit into..maybe i just dont fit into anything lol ❤

Very nice! Looks great and like you said, you could go out in public without feeling like you are wearing a costume. I love the belt! Where do you get your leather? I have veen looking for a bag and belt in that shade 😊
@KatieMakesStuff
@KatieMakesStuff Год назад
This leather is an old hide I found at a craft supply clear out, but FrogJelly leather is a good place to get veg tan. The color is because it has some age, but when you get veg tan it's almost white and very stiff, but with age and oil, it turns this really lovely light brown and softens up a lot. You'll probably want a single or double bend to make a bag, and that may give you enough length to cut a belt as well. Good luck and I'm always happy to help!
