Thanks for this video! You just saved me $600 by allowing me to replace a fountain pump easily myself without dismantling the fountain as the "professional" fountain company was planning to do to install a new pump. I used the same technique to replace the underwater pump that sits at the base of a large yard fountain. Cut the old pump cord and the new one, hooked the wires together with couplers, then heat shrink cover sealed the connection. Much appreciated.

The inside of marine heat shrink has the glue pre-coated on the inside. When it shrinks down some of that glue is usually squeezed out, which is what you saw in the video.

Gday Andy. I know you made this post some time ago but people like me are still searching and using your ideas. I am about to undertake this venture (qualified electrician) and need to keep within the wiring rules we have here in Oz. Just curious as I plan in using your system but am using the following. As you are probably aware now you can purchase crimps with heat shrink already attached nowadays. Plan is to cut suitable length of waterproof heat shrink and place over one end, Offset crimps as you have shown, then heat crimp heat shrinks, Wrap in the connection in self amalgamating tape (stops any sharp edges from crimp penetrating heat shrink then place heat shrink over tape then shrink. Bit of overkill but guaranteed never to break down in water, Using a 12 volt DC system with 3 Watt LED.

Hi Greg. Thanks for your comments and I'm glad you found the video useful. We still use this method using a crimp (high quality), tape ( self-amalgamating) and heat shrink, however the heat shrink we use has a resin built in so as it heats and contracts you can see the resin squeeze out. When cooled this is very strong and waterproof. All the best, Andy

Thank you!!! This saved me a ton of trouble. I used marine shrink/adhesive butt connectors as well. My joint is probably less likely to fail than the submersible pump electrics, now.

This is great. I personally have never had good enough luck with crimps to ever want to trust them in an area that's difficult to access such as this. I prefer using solder. It takes more time but you'll never have to redo it. Just my 2 cents.

Dear sir, for additinal protection it's optional that we can silicone inside and around the sockets before covering them up with tape and heating.

Helpful. But, you lost me on the "glue" comment as I didn't see you apply any glue. Is that built-in the shrink tubing that you used?
@GoldenCoast

Yes David, its already in the shrink tubing.

Me too, I wondered where the glue came from. Normal heat shrink tube doesn't include any glue. What shrink tubing did you use?

Where did the glue from the joint come from? Is it within the cable?

Thanks Andy for this video. I have bought a pool niche but not sure about the size of the cable that comes with it. I was thinking its 6mm. Please help. Thanks
@GoldenCoast
@GoldenCoast 4 года назад
Hi, a cable is not supplied with a niche but with the electrical 'guts' component . Cables must be sized correctly for voltage and power requirements and the VA load but please be aware that ANY electrical works in a pool or spa MUST be carried out by a fully qualified electrician and certification given for the works. I hope this helps, Andy

@@GoldenCoast Definitely it wouldn't be me doing that job, I'm want to buy all what's need. What is the size of the electrical gut of the one used in this video? My lamps are 18v lamps.

I use a 20mm version but remeber it's not standard heat shrink as it has a resin lining which seals the joint.

@@bw120588 it’s hooked to a gfi outlet or breaker and what happens if the water gets in the fixture like it always does it is protected by the gfi which will prevent it from killing you unless for some stupid reason you don’t have it hooked up to a GFI
