I made a traditional woodworking workbench with just over $100 in materials recently, and this leg vise is the perfect holding solution. It is massive and operates very easily. If you don't have a vise on your workbench, follow along and make one. You won't regret it!

I'm glad I came to look at this video. This is great! What material did you use to build the vice? Also, 5:02 that's a LOT of glue... In my head I was already trying to think of a way to secure the handle, and of course, it was going to be overly complex. But the screw on either side is a genius low-tech solution I thought... Great job friend!

Thanks, Stephen! I used some spalted red oak for the leg vise material. Yeah, wanted to get some really good adhesion, so used a ton of glue. I was pondering some other ways of securing the handle, but they were just unnecessarily complicated like you said. This way turned out to be really simple and is still working well!

He used the Oak tree that fell in his parents yard from the hurricane. A guy came with a mill and milled the oak tree for him in exchange for a bunch of pecan trees.

Gotta love the “land mass” between mobile and New Orleans.... the forgotten coast. I was in Hattiesburg when the storm hit and watched ancient oaks bend like sappling pines in the wind. Then had to go find my family the next day on the coast. Without any Federal aid, folks had already cleared 49 from Jackson to Gulfport with chainsaws. We were fortunate to not lose anyone but the scars are still here everywhere you look. Glad you finally finished the bench! It looks great and hopefully I’ll be right behind you with a little different design 👍🏻

I just completed jays bench with the same hardware. I also used syp with some oak trim. I'm loving the table. One thing about southern yellow pine is that it doesn't take glue very well. I used tightbond 2 glue. So if you use syp, make sure you don't skimp on the glue. One thing I noticed with the yost vice kit is the lack of support between the vice and the table leg. I'm going to add a bearing of some sort along with the hub that is attached to the back of the leg for support. That also should make it screw in and out a lot smoother. I used danish oil for my finish like jay but now i think ill add a little wipe on poly thinned down to help harden the pores of the wood some. Great job on your bench.

I was too smooth with my camera moves. Ha ha. The first shot of me sanding was when it disappeared. When I changed angles, that was the second one.

Great mate. You and jay Bates have inspired me to order the screw kit, which is on its way now. I'm laminating a pine bench top now using 3 x 2 pine and will haveva grunty looking woodworking bench for carving by end of the month. I'm excited to be retiring the old oak veneer kitchen table that serves as my work bench currently.

Bruce A. Ulrich absolutely. Jay Bates had published a video on the pros and cons of his hardwood bench vs his pine bench. The pine meets my needs and was much easier on my wallet. My variations will come with some added storage under the bench top. I’m also going to attempt to incorporate some add-ons from April Wilkerson assembly table build.

I love the look of that Southern Yellow Pine. Would like to make my bench out of that. All we got at the stores near me is Douglas Fir.

Minor point. Wipe on poly is poly + mineral spirits. By adding the BLO you made danish oil.

Thanks, Ryan! Just a simple dowel will work just fine! And you can get hardwood dowels at some hardware stores.

Bruce, for the Yoist screw, did you drill the chop and leg the same shaft diamater, i.e. 30mm (1-/316) or go a a bit larger, maybe1-3/8"? Also did you go through level or angle up slightly to counteract racking? Thanks a bunch and the torquise color looks great! -Will

It was a pretty tight fit, but the hole was slightly larger than the screw. It gets screwed to the leg and to the vise, so it's ok to have a little space. I drilled that hole level and to help with racking, I used that dowel that you see. It's based on Jay Bates' plans that I used.

Thank you! I didn't use a specific angle for the wedge. It was arbitrary. Be sure to cut the wedge first, and then just trace whatever that angle is onto your leg vise chop. Then, you'll be sure the two fit together.

Thanks, Robin! If you don’t use the wedge, the leg vise will rack and not hold securely. The wedge acts like an ever-adjusting bottom counterpart to the material at the top that you’re trying to clamp.

I don’t recall at all! I don’t think it is that important but it needs to be less than 45 degrees for sure.

If I'm doing any detail work, I usually pull up a stool and have a seat. As far as using the vise, it is about the right height for me.

It’s about 20 inches long. I don’t know if that helps. The angle of the wedge doesn’t matter as long as you transfer that to the under side of the vise.

At the end when you show how to use it your camera was positioned until we missed the wedge inset at the bottom. I looked back and could not find anything about how the floor wedge works.

Sorry about that. Not sure if I can explain it the best here. I know Jay Bates did a little more detail about it in his video about it. This is based on his design. The simple version is that as soon as the jaw of the vise grabs your material, you push the wedge in until it meets the leg vise. Then, you turn about another half of a turn and it’ll be tight. The wedge prevents racking.

I’m not sure of the minimum thickness. You do want it to be pretty thick and beefy do it can hold well. Of it was too thin, I think it would flex as you clamped it down.
