Mixer brush is great! But if we want our character to talk, we'll want at least some jaw movement and and open mouth showing. For a silent background character it could work well though.
hi, Hello, when you first import the tiger after separating the head and body, it moves synchronously with the camera, but I did not experience such a situation, I wonder why? I did everything exactly as in the first step. I also get this warning: body tracking requires a puppet with an armed (active) and enabled body behavior
Animate is for more traditional keyframe and tween based animations, Character Animator is more performance capture and live animation. It depends on the project and what workflow you're going for, I think of them as a screwdriver and a hammer - both great tools, just depends what you need to do.
This is an awesome way of animating my AI artwork, but I have run into trouble with the jaw step, I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong, but mine isn't working at all😢
Best guess is if nothing is happening that the jaw tag isn't being recognized properly by CH, either via the lip sync and/or nutcracker jaw behavior. In Rig mode select your Jaw layer and make sure that the Jaw tag is showing up on the right - if not, add it. If the problem persists, please upload a video or screenshot of your issue to adobe.com/go/chfeedback and we'll try to help you out.
As someone who is able to paint/animate without A.I. not having a staff to commit to each job, and not having the time to master 10 different jobs, A.I. is an extremely useful tool, that allows you to bring a vision to life that you otherwise would never have the time or resources to tackle. For example, i DM a dungeons and dragons campaign, i want to record the sessions, animate puppets for livestream games for each player and create Blender/after effect centered videos of it. With out a team of people to help me or A.I. this wouldnt happen. So although i understand how A.I. can hurt jobs, it will never truly replace artists
Hi Dave - Great tutorial. I've been using AI Art with MidJourney for a while now. To make characters you also have to do surgery to make them work. The reason I use MidJourney is that I can generate "Style Sheets" and generate a front, profile, 3/4 and rear view of the same character. I can then use the views together or separately to make them walk or turn. I have used generative fill in PS to change the clothing of each character pose by just circling the character and prompting. AI and CH is a great combo !
I was trying this with a character and found "Layer via Copy" works better for isolating a body part than Layer via Cut if you don't want the white space afterwards.
Hello Dave, could tell me if a puppet from Ai jpeg image is heavier than drawn in Illustrator? And multiple character made from Ai in the same animatation scene in Adobe Character will impact pc CPU and GPU? May be I should prefer Illustrator for best performance?
Im not even into this type of stuff animation characters. But ive subbed because its just a really Interesting and creative watch and you explain things in great detail ❤️❤️
Thanks Dave! I've been playing with this already so it's good to see I was on the right path! I've learned a ton since I started using CH in 2022. Thank you!
This was amazing. Thank you so much. Was using PS gen fill to make some of the custom characters even more custom and this is another method Id definitely use.
Honestly, I see a lot of people complaining about AI art, and I just don't get it. Did people react the same way when electric razors were invented, because "barbers are gonna go out of business, boo-hoo"? If you want a high-quality result, you have to have it done by a professional, and this goes for barbers and graphic designers as well. If you are okay with a lower quality, with all its faults, that's up to you, and you are free to do so with a TOOL we now have.
@@ovschinikovyou sound bitter, ai art is amazing. You can create so much content faster and cheaper. Before ai art many artists would rip off customers for basic designs.
This is so great! I've actually been playing with this for a month or 2, using your older tutorials. Tonight I randomly decided to see what your newest videos were - and boom! You're doing exactly what I've been doing!!! I'm really looking forward to learning more. Thanks for continuing to make these tutorials! My new one comes out on Sunday, and I'm working on a puppet that has waving and other action-based movements from your other tutorials. It's so fun!
HI I am back. with a question, I almost done my character but I end Up with the hands moving apart from the body at the shoulders when I move them, and also when I try to move them in front of the belly they are going behind the body! I must have done something wrong !! Any solution ?Thanks
For the arms moving away from the body at the shoulder, usually this would mean the arms aren't connected properly to the body group - check your rigging against an example character and see if there are any differences. For the arm placement, if you want the arms to go in front of the body you would want to put those layers above your body group in the PSD or AI file. If these problems persist, please upload a video or screenshot of your issues to adobe.com/go/chfeedback and we'll try to help you out.
hello, i just have one question may seems stupid but m still a beginner hh, how i can move the project to adobe character animator from photoshop. do i have to export it then import it to character animator. but it doesn't work with me tho
Good ! Thanks to this video, I can now create video with only the head of my dog who can speak 😂 I'm sending funny stuff with it to my wife 😂 With this video, I've leanrt a bit of photoshop and how to create a basic puppet for Ch. Animator :)
When I click CMD X the head comes off but when I click CMD, Shft, and V, I get a black-and-white outline of the head??? what am I doing wrong.? Also, I clicking "remove the background," I am not using the lasso tool to remove the background.
Hmm, your settings might be different than mine, you could always just use the basic copy and paste commands. And yes, remove background is a new addition that works well too!
Hey Samurai! You're doing an awesome job!! I've got an image that I can't seem to bring to life. Could you animate it for me and send me the project so I can open it with Character Animator? I can send you some money for this service. Thanks a bunch!
My fulltime job as a designer at Adobe prevents me from taking on outside freelance work, but we do have a great group of people who do freelance Character Animator work listed up on adobe.com/go/ch_examples_thirdparty_en. Hello sir, very well explained. Sir please tell that whether my laptop require GPU 3.3( graphics card) for Adobe animate and Adobe character animate. As I want to start my journey of making RU-vid channel of 2D cartoon animated kids stories. But my laptop doesn't have in built graphics card. What should I do then if graphics card is required for these softwares. And whats the monthly subscription cost of Adobe animated and Adobe character animate. Please please guide me sir. Do u have any complete course to learn all this from start to end so that one is versed with making a good 2D animated kids story.🙏
The full page and pricing info can be found here, it differs from region to region: www.adobe.com/products/character-animator.html. Our system requirements are here: helpx.adobe.com/adobe-character-animator/system-requirements.html. And the best all around tutorials are probably the complete workflow ones: ru-vid.com/group/PLq4LynfF_r15MB40HNeLSw8Rebrd8os9D
This is brilliant! I'm always so excited to see you have uploaded a video. I'm looking forward to seeing more AI techniques that can be used in Adobe Character Animator. 😃🤸♀
I'm looking at teaching this application to middle school students this term, thanks for the great tutorial, I look forward to seeing what they come up with. While still learning the basics myself, I am curious to know if Character Animator has the ability to work with multiple angles of a character rather than a 2d puppet style of animation?
Some Character Animator puppets do have multiple views/angles, but they are all 2D. You will find more multiview characters in the desktop Pro version of the app.
Hello master okaysamurai, how are you? I hope you are very well, my name is Adrian, the reason for my message is to ask for help, I would be very grateful if you could help me with the following problem, in Character Animator & Photoshop not connecting :-(..... I have downloaded a PS face template from the official Adobe site, I try to load it in CH and it does not detect it, it is as if the file did not exist, I tried to drag the file to the CH program and nothing happens, help please :(
Make sure you have a valid PSD file and in Character Animator go to File > Import. You will need to be in Pro mode for this - click the upper right corner and switch from Starter to Pro if needed. If the problem persists, please upload a video or screenshot of your issue to adobe.com/go/chfeedback and we'll try to help you out.
@@okaysamurai Thank you very much, master. I have fixed the previous problem, but now another one has arisen in relation to this video. I have done the entire process exactly twice from minute 0 to minute 6:21 and when importing my PS file to CH, my character does not appear with floating movement as it appears to the master. Does anyone know why?
Make sure all your layers are on and named/organized correctly. If you are not seeing any floating it probably means your Head layer isn't tagged as a Head. You can post a screenshot in a new thread on adobe.com/go/chfeedback and we'll help you out more.
Thanks for the tutorial. Is there any way to add wiggle animation to a limb in Character Animator? I'm adding my lip sync from scene audio and want to know if I can somehow add some wiggle animation to the hands too
There is a Wiggler behavior, but it's only for Illustrator artwork: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-zpwgKLGQDQg.htmlsi=uL1OHQ3B5L1hr0D-&t=203
If the character is set up correctly, the body will move with the head as you move around. The arms I show at 19:49. If that's too quick, you can check out ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-hK-DjtiPzRs.htmlsi=SQOIiyesgQRIYqvZ&t=1568.
Yes, you could use the same techniques in this video to cut it apart and turn it into a 2D puppet. There are several characters on pages.adobe.com/character/en/characters that were made in 3D programs.
Hi Dave, I’m looking for some guidance on managing multiple characters and multiple scenes, as I can see the structure within Ca rapidly getting out of hand. Have you covered this subject in any of your videos? I’ve watched most of them but can’t recall seeing this topic. Specifically, I have one character that will require multiple costume changes (for different videos) then multiple static backgrounds in different scenes. I’m trying to get a handle on how to manage that, any help would be gratefully appreciated.
The "Complete workflow" series is probably the best. I end up doing most of my compositing in After Effects, which I walk through in those. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-VhCKD5vl848.htmlsi=-Vf-_qwZmZS0_07z
Hello! I am a newbie and am very interested in this program! You have an excellent presentation of the material, very understandable for beginners! I really appreciate you sharing such useful information with us! Will wait new lessons and continuing the topic of animation and working with AI!
Amazing! I used this process in a puppet back a few months ago but it wasn't as clean as it could have been. I have to make some more and this is helpful. Your process is cleaner than mine :) Thank you!

Thanks again for your help! I'm creating a couple characters for a project at work that are supposed to interact with me via green screen for our STEM program. Kids are going to love this!
Nice tutorial Dave. I did try this out a couple weeks ago and it appears to work okay. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5UGdWlI-ixE.html . However, it can quickly get complicated if we want to do a quarter left or quarter right profile :-).
@@okaysamurai Yep. That was the problem, I tagged them wrong. Thank you for an excellent walkthrough. Learned a ton. I love Adobe. Greetings from Mexico.
You would need to rig each as +Left Pupil and +Right Pupil and make sure there are big enough Left Eyeball and Right Eyeball layers for them to move in. Check this out for more eye rigging tips: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5SxNChhm0jo.htmlsi=c46RFa0eAKuRWqK4
File > Import a PSD or AI file and then select it in the project panel. If the problem persists, please upload a video or screenshot of your issue to adobe.com/go/chfeedback and we'll try to help you out.
@okaysamurai Hi, I managed to do it, I just switched to Pro version, the good thing is that now is working. I start working along your video for a project. I have a lot of fun, your video is amazing. Keep up the good work. And thank you for the reply
Just go to File > Import and select your Illustrator file. CH doesn't save the actual art file, it just references it like many video editing apps do, so keep your Illustrator file in the same spot and you should be good to go.

@@okaysamurai thank you for the link but I thing this tutorial over here is the right one because my puppet is a stati image, like the tiger. So I guess I am doing something wrong here. I will try and try and try. Thank you, you're precious!
Ah good point, you're wanting the Nutcracker Jaw behavior. If the problem persists, please upload a video or screenshot of your issue to adobe.com/go/chfeedback and we'll try to help you out.
Hello, your work is great. One question, how can we make the character walk forward towards the camera with these types of characters. I say this because of the complexity in designing these types of characters. Do you have training in this field?
Character Animator is more about side walking, but for front walking you would need to manipulate the character to do cycle layers frame by frame animations (like ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-gv_2Upvtm-M.htmlsi=54OnswzWlkz-IYL_&t=281) or use motion library (like ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ZTevkEadskk.htmlsi=LeC8Vw-BmJwYeLBD&t=574).
