It's been very hot out so I've found myself staying out of the shop. I decided to set up in the air conditioning and make another spaceship out of old plastic junk.
I put together this video a bit differently than usual. Might be less palatable to some. You have been warned. That said, thanks for watching!

Hey Ben. That's a cool looking ship. Couple of things you might find useful: Try not to use power tools when cutting or sanding - if you can get a cheap, dremel type tool with a speed control so you can slowly cut plastics and try to use sandpaper sheets or sticks. A bit more work, but much better results. Always sand plastics when trash bashing, it really helps with gluing and painting. Sprinkling baking powder, talc, even fine ash, makes superglue set very fast and very hard. Using low-tack masking tape will really help when painting around things. Even blu-tac is useful for this. Never worry about not having glass in a cockpit - the filming models in Star Wars didn't have any! Don't be hard on yourself when you're making things up as you go. There's no real plan. Don't worry about symmetry. It's not needed in space. Asymmetrical ships look really cool too. Thanks for sharing! Cheers ✌️

Excellent Project Ben- I have a friend who is a professional model builder and is featured in all the magazines. He is a wiz with paint (something I also dread) and uses an airbrush. I have an airbrush and it is so much easier than it looks. He is big on weathering and texturing and can make something brand new look old. The best part about RU-vid is there are thousands of awesome model and diorama building videos that are super detailed in their instruction. I love both ship designs that you have done and I think maybe we are up for a RayGun challenge! I know Big Vic and MagDad would definitely be on board along with a bunch of other viewers! =D Awesome stuff!

I love this build so much! I feel like yellow paint is super hard to work with, it's easier when painted over a white undercoat, properly thinned and it needs multiple coats in my experience. I also recommend looking into making your own oil wash so you can wash the metallic parts. You're way too hard on yourself too mate, you've done an incredible job. 16:50 Great ship design, Ben, and I genuinely like the bumpiness in the paint job because it gives the ship some wear, some history, a more lived-in look, and perhaps some cool stories for the imagined crew to tell: "Hey, Captain; remember the time we had to high-tail it the hell off off that sand heap of a planet, Skellion Prime? That was hairy!" "Yeah, the ship took a licking just trying to punch its way out of that sandblaster atmosphere, never mind those fighters behind us trying to blow us out of the stars." See? So, don't get down in the dumps about an imperfect paint job or bumpiness when it can all add to that ship's unique story. Keep up the great work. :)

The ship is perfect but the Rustoleum Hammered paint comes with texture particles to make it look bumpier, that's why it came out textured that way. Suggested solution if you like, drybrush with a sandy tan color and make a desert-seen base it will look perfect, making it desert dirty.

Hey there. Great job on the ship. I see that you tend to struggle a little when it comes to painting your models. If I may, these ideas might help with that. First, lightly sand the plastic parts before putting them together and painting them. This will allow the glue and the paint stick better when assembling it. This is your choice of course, but I wouldn't use hammered paint for texture on a space ship hull. It just doesn't look right. You can achieve that with aviation gray ( a medium light flat gray) and light aviation gray ( an even lighter gray) as well as the application of gribbles and weathering. On that subject, you can weather your models with a little amount of smashed up black, or dark grey pastel stick and paint thinner. Mix them together and you have a fool proof weathering tool. The shoe polish is also a valid idea, but you have to apply it in sections and then wipe it off. Don't apply it to the entire product because let's face it, it is a kind of paint, and it will dry up.. If you want, you can also try the Tamiya weathering kits. They are affordable and easy to find at the hobby store. Lastly, check out people like the Otaku Builder or the Thyco Project here on RU-vid for inspiration and ideas on color schemes. I hope that helps. I can't wait to see what you come up with next. Have a good one.

Shoe polish debacle. Lol You can make a wash using floetrol for acrylic or penetrol for oil. They are both clear resins, just add your color to it. It prolongs working time and depending g on how much paint you use depends on transparency. Faux finishers use it for that very reason so you can dab it off or wipe it off and it stay in the cracks and crevices and create a slight color change. It can also be used just to thin paint, unlike water or thinner , it won't affect the bonding ability since it has binding agents in it. If you reduce with water or oil , you reduce the amount of binders in the material leading to color loss and low bonding and binding.

You can solve any of your glue issues by sanding the items first most manufactured plastic containers just don't like glue but sanding them gives a nice rough surface that gives glue (and paint) something to stick to. Rattle cans are your friends when it comes to painting, decent primer first, then a base colour and masking tape for where ever you want a splash of colour. I'd advise against using the hammered effect paints as they will give a ''bumpy' finish. Mix cheap art paints with turpentine for your washes and use a scouring sponge to take it off but don;t let it dry first and do it in smaller sections. Practuce repainting old toys from thrift shops, we all learn by doing. Lovely bit of trash vashing by the way, keep it up, you do good work.

That’s cool that you found a hobby that you enjoy Ben. It’s not for me but I enjoy watching creativity. I think it turned out good in the end and it’s a good way to increase your skills in lots of areas. Take care 😃👍🏼

the cool thing about acrylic paint is that it wipes right off with water. so if you were to get a fine paint brush, you could just dip it in water and it could be used to clean up all your edges, sort of like an eraser. also dont blop on so much paint. start in the middle and just gently brush it around slowly so it smooth on your work.

i should say acrylic wipes off easy on plastic, but not so much on some other surfaces.
@mrbenmall
@mrbenmall Год назад
True, but acrylic looks different... powdery almost. Thanks!

Ben, i think you spaceship came out good. Its very ingenious how you built it out of recyclable plastic. The good thing about your paint job is you can think on it some more and change it later! 👍😎🇺🇸Roger

One of my favorite spaceships was in the movie "The Black Hole" 1979, it was more like your first ship with a greenhouse and just a whole world inside the ship..........Anyhow, other than a few glitches with the paint job it looks like it was a lot of fun.

The Sygnus. Yes, I like that ship too. I love that movie. BTW, I once hired Anthony Perkins to be in a video I wrote and produced.

Hey Ben really enjoyed the video, very relaxing. I'm sure this is already been said but the reason it had that texture is because you use the Rust-Oleum Hammered paint. But try to be more positive bro, the ship looked awesome!

Not much to that shuttle. I'm not sure I still have it. But I am getting the urge to do another spaceship.

love this, artistic recycling!! I think the paint finish may have something to do with the weather. I sanded degreased and painted 2 trailer rims this weekend, Simple job, but both have areas that are bumpy and areas that are nice and smooth. I then tested another can of paint on a test piece of metal with the same result.
@mrbenmall
@mrbenmall Год назад
Yes, it's been very humid lately. That may have an effect.

remember any spaceship of the industrial type would get pretty bashed about with space debris,so it would not be perfect,it looks pretty good....jpj

Man, I love the design of your ships! The shapes you create are great! I think the paint turned out pretty good after all the trial and error. i could be wrong but I think the rust oleum is textured! Next time try masking the the small yellow parts and for weathering I would do the same as you did with the shoe polish but instead just use watered down acrylic!

Ben this is a cool project. I love your honesty, but don’t beat yourself up either. I love aging and weathering. Paint is a pain, but it’s forgivable. Layer it up, and start light. You can always add more using cardboard to bounce spray paint is a good technique for dirt. You can also play around with chalk dust. It was very relaxing watching you do this. I think you need a Scoutcrafter style challenge-build a spaceship from scraps. Check out Jason Jensen Trains RU-vid channel “sci if modeling” and “Star Wars Inspired Diorama.”
