Rene Ohms discusses what considerations go into deciding how to deal with an evolving incident, hopefully to avoid the need for a rescue.
Rene Ohms lives in the Black Hills of South Dakota. She has been an expedition caver for more than 20 years, and has caved throughout the United States and in 4 other countries. Rene is a Fellow of the National Speleological Society, and received the Lew Bicking Award in 2020 for excellence in exploration. She has been an NCRC instructor since 2009, is the Wyoming State Coordinator, and serves on the review committee for American Caving Accidents. Rene is also a Wilderness First Responder and a SPRAT Level 1 rope access technician.
Rene’s presentation focuses on decision-making underground. She chose this topic because she’s been in many situations where decisions needed to be made during a caving incident. She’s spent a lot of time thinking back on these decisions, the factors that went into making them, and their consequences. Thinking through possible scenarios and outcomes can help to make us all safer cavers, and this presentation is intended to give you some tools and food for thought!
