Thank you so much for this! I want to get into candle making, this helps a lot in getting started. I’ve been making lip balm for a few years now, it smells like mint, tastes like chocolate, and it’s a hit with friends and family. Here’s the recipe, I usually double it….Peppermint Lip Balm, 2 Tbl. Cocoa Butter, 2 Tbl Coconut oil, 1 Tbl Beeswax, 25 drops Peppermint Essential Oils or to preference. Melt beeswax, cocoa butter, and coconut oil, remove from heat, add essential oils, put in desired lip balm containers. Glad you had a nice Thanksgiving! 🦃
Great video Darren! We've been making candles this year also. For those metal wick centering tools, I know they work they way you're using them, but if you're stopping your candle pour short because you're worried about the wax hitting that metal centering tool, you can turn them the other way, and you can get more space since the tool will be above the top of the jar instead of down inside it. I need to get me one of those pots with the spigot like you have. That looks like it works great. Candles look great! Thanks for sharing.
Hey Texas Beek. I was mainly stopping short so I didn't overflow it and get wax on my hand. lol I like those small glass containers, I think I'll just do those in the future. Those other ones are nice, but really expensive. I used up all my wax and didn't really make a lot of candles like I thought I might. I still have 12 more of those big ones and about 12 of the small ones as well left. Hopefully I don't have to coat a lot of foundation this next year. I don't make candles every year, I don't have enough wax. Thanks for watching.
The wick size depends on the candle diameter I believe. Larger candles use larger wicks. The Mann Lake molds have recommend wick sizes in their catalog. You can look on line at those to get an idea of what size you would need. Hope that helps.
I just found your videos. I'm just getting started in candle making and I like the beeswax candles. Was just wondering where you put your warning labels on the piller candles.
Well done ! You obviously spent a lot of time in prep to produce this video. I have done candles using these molds a few times and you simplify the process. I enjoy your intros with the game cameras...a wonderful touch!
Thanks Jim. It can be a bit tricky until you see someone do it. The biggest part is to have enough wax. I don’t make candles every year because it takes a lot of wax and I usually don’t have that much. Thanks for watching.
Hola. Perdón, a mi me encanta el olor y el tacto ,el color y todo lo que es de cera de abejas. Son maravillosas. Felicidades. Saludos de Guadalajara, Jalisco en México 👋🏻😁
Great looking candles. On the glass to stop the wax spots on the side either heat the jar up or cool the wax down a little bit is what I find works best. Won't stop it all the time but a lot of the time. I usually melt the wax and pour quick so the wax doesn't get to hot on me. That also stops the candle from cracking if you ever experience that. Hope yall had a great Thanksgiving
Hey Justin, thanks for the tips. Yes, I did have a couple crack as well. One had a pretty large crack in it. We had a nice Thanksgiving. Hope you did as well.
Hey venidam. Jars are hard to come by like that. Those Yankee Candle jars are really nice. You can find them on eBay, but people want too much for them. Thanks for watching!
Hi Donald. I started with a deep box and it was too tall, so I switched to that nuc box and it was perfect. lol. Yeah the cold seems to break the wax away from those molds. Thanks for stopping by.
Great video! We poured our first candles after watching your wax rendering video. I love the idea of writing the wick and wax volume on the molds. We used long bobby pins on our smaller candles that may help prevent splashing. Thanks as always for sharing!
Mug up at Jerome Bee Farm. Good morning, Darren. I'm sippin' coffee, getting the fire in the woodstove going. 32 F at 5am here in New Hampshire. Tis the season for indoor projects here in the northern regions, at least until the snow base builds into a skiable base. I have a small bar mold. Haven't got any candle molds yet. I was looking for a mold for a 1 1/4"x3" tall candle that would fit in an emergency candle lantern without much luck. It may be a DIY project. Thanks for sharing. Happy holidays
Hey Lamb Brook. Mug up to you as well, having some pumpkin spice latte over here. There's probably a way to make molds out of something and DIY it up. Maybe make a wood one. Those store bought molds are getting really pricey now. You could always just use like 1/2 pint jars too. Thanks for stopping in .
One thing I do is if I'm going to make several candles from the same mold I eun wick from bottom and leave itnattached to the roll, then you just pull it through when you're done and it's set for the next pour. I've found that every time you run the wire through it expands the hole.
Which wicks are with less odor as some indicated that these give off overpowering odor? Also, can I use any vegetable oil instead, which one produces less odor?
This is very interesting Darren. What do you do with all the candles? I know having them on hand would be good but I am sure you get a lot of candles made. I like your setup with the wax melter with the spout. That works great. Before long you are going to have a professional candle studio. They turned out really great Darren. I really liked them, buddy. How much wax do you get each year? I like that tip about the gloves, I will have to remember that one. Great tip!
I don’t recall. The candle molds will recommend wick size. It’s based on the diameter of the candle. If you look on the Mann Lake site and find the mold, it’s on the mold description what wick to purchase with it. Hope that helps.
Like you I ate way too much Thanksgiving dinner it just tasted so good. Laid back on the couch and started watching some football. When I woke up the game was over. I want to try candle making but at this time I just don't have the amount of wax to use. Thanks for the video.
Hi Mac. It takes a lot of wax to make some candles. I don’t do it every year. I probably made a dozen candles with all that wax. It’s a fun little craft thing to do. Thanks for watching.
Darren how do you decide what to charge for your candles. Like on your Bee hive candle . I hope those storms that just came thru did not give you to hard of a time. THANKS
Hi Kathy. If you look at wax for sale on line, I've seen it around a dollar per oz, but that's just for wax. I haven't ever sold any candles. I usually just give them family and to people I know. We got some nice rains, but last night it was very windy and no storms though. Thanks for watching.
Thanks I saw a video last week where this woman that own a candle Co. An she was saying add up your cost an then go $$X4 . So if I had $5.00 into a candle I would sale it for $20.00 .I have not heard what other bee keepers are doing on there prices was just trying to get a idea how to price . Hope you an your family have a great weekend an up coming Holidays. THANKS
Hey Glenn. Yeah, those Jars aren't cheap are they. At least the nice ones cost a lot. Tell all your relatives you want their Yankee Candle jars when they are done with them. lol
I use about 2 oz of fragrance oil to a pound of wax. I just eyeballed it to 1/3 of that 16 oz bottle to that melting pot full of wax. It turned out nice and fragrant with vanilla.
Darren, good video! I’ve been thinking about making some candles and your crockpot with the spigot is the way to go for what I would do. If there’s not a link for it in the description, can you put one there? Thanks!
Hey Don, yeah that works great. I put a link to the one I ordered ( as second one that's bigger) It showed up today, now that I'm done. lol Thanks for watching.
Nice video. I look foreward to having enough extra wax for candles and such. Happy late Thanksgiving! I also napped off over eating. The highlight of my Thanksgiving was getting a long thoughtful comment on one of my videos from Frederick Dunn. Don't tell Fred but I acted like a school girl running around the house showing it off and texting my bee buddies!
Hi Phillip. Yeah it takes a lot of wax to start candles. I don’t make them every year because I still need wax to coat my foundation. It’s cool to have folks stop in to your videos. I like to pin their comments when I get one. Thanks for watching.
Jerome, I was at Dollar Tree and thought of something that may help you out. They have glass canisters with the sealed lids that are similar to that expensive one you have. $1.25.
Try pulling the wick through the bottom of the mold and don't cut the wick off the spool. Then when you pull your candle out of the mold the wick will actually run itself up through the mold and you snip it off the bottom of the candle and your mold is ready for next time. No need to ever thread the needle again. (only downside is you have to store the mold with the wick which is fine)
Also, feel free to just pour the wax into the container and then steady the wick afterwards with the metal bar. Now you don't have to worry about a narrow pouring area.
