I show you how I glaze and clean up my buttons and other flat round stamped pieces before firing. This method allows you to simply lay your buttons out flat on the kiln shelf, with no need for additional kiln furniture. I do suggest having kiln-washed shelves.

I was wondering, wouldn't the unglazed back cause wearing of the fabric, or of the thread used to sew them on with?

Maybe some, but not anything significant. You can always smooth out the back and holes with a Diamond burr sanding pad and file, if it’s a concern. It’s not something I find worth worrying about (and yes, I’ve been making my own clothes for 35 years 😊)

How do you fire them flat? On stilts? Then do you have to dremel off still marks?Well done!

They just get laid onto the shelf. No stilts. That’s why I clean the backs and edges with a sponge, so they don’t stick.

@@stellworkstudio4391 I’m not a ceramicist so bear with me here but how does wiping them with a sponge help them not to stick to the shelf? And is that why you only glaze the front, because otherwise the glaze would stick? Thanks :)

@@stellworkstudio4391 one more question: between the first video and this one, did you bake the clay? Or did you let it sit for a while? It looks different. 😊 have a good day!

@@gennwithag I always bisque fire before glazing, yes. The clays I use turn quite pink in the first firing 😊

@@gennwithag yes, glaze is made of silica, clay, mineral colorants, and fluxes that make everything melt together, similar to a melted glass. The glaze, when melted, will stick to anything it touches, so I have to be careful that no melted glaze will touch my kiln shelves.
