I attended the Joe Kubert School of Graphic Art from 1994-96. I turned pro in 1996, and began working as a RPG illustrator, then as a license artist for DC Comics Licensing, and I went on to pencil a few comics, and illustrate a few covers. I was lucky enough to get to illustrate alternate covers for the IDW/TOPPS series, MARS ATTACKS: FIRST BORN. I did covers for all four issues, in which I got to pay homage to some of Wally Wood's epic WEIRD SCIENCE covers. If you're interested in seeing those, google my name and the series, and you're sure to find them online someplace. Throughout my career, I have kept a photocopy of WALLY WOOD'S 22 PANELS THAT ALWAYS WORK above my art desk. In the early days, it was a great source of inspiration for me. Wood was one of the greatest artists who ever worked in comics. His name is right up there with the likes of Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko, Will Eisner, etc. I really enjoyed watching these videos, because Wood is one of the artists who influenced me most. Thanks for the great videos!

My pleasure Loston! It's great to hear from a pro who is inspired and influenced by Wood. I will check out your Mars Attacks:First Born covers!

That photography comparison was brilliant. I love those photos, and they really do look a lot like the man's art.

Photography definitely describes the captured effect in Wood's art. Early in his career Wood assisted George Wunder on Terry and the Pirates ; much of Wood's techniques are undoubtedly influenced by Wunder's style. Terry from 1946 - the 1950s as drawn by George Wunder or under Wunder's guidance has such a defined detail that can comparisons can later be seen in Woods EC work.

Hi anthony, Thanks for watching! Oh yeah, Wood learned his shading, inking, and color early color techniques from Wunder. You can see it especially in Wood's early EC work. I haven't done a time line check of Wood's art...but I wonder how it develops during his time at EC...hhmmmm...that might be something to look at for the part 4?

Ronn Foss (artist) not only had me study the 22 panels, but he also had me watch THE THIRD MAN over and over again...he said that movie influenced a lot of artists back in the day... Thanks for doing these
@FizzFop1
@FizzFop1 3 года назад
Hi Vance! Thanks for watching! Oh man, The Third Man is one of my favorite movies...The end scene in the sewers of Vienna...That visuals of the wet streets and walls are amazing. As a photographer, I love going out in the rain and taking photos. That film is another of those great chiaroscuro lighting techniques in action.

Awesome! These series on wally wood's panels are very helpful, i think other youtube videos about the panels did not explained them. The variants are very helpful. Great job thanks a lot 👍🤓👍 cant wait for Part4!

Hey Rogue! I watched a bunch of videos people had made on WW22P. I don't like to criticize, but none of them did a good job. They showed the reference sheet and would talk...in many cases, I wondered if they had ever seen any of Wood's art. When I started looking closely at his work, I was blown away by the variants...and experimentation. His work is beautiful.

Wow! I’m actually glad this s a multi-part video. While I’ve seen the 22 panels before, this really gets to the guts of it! Also liked the highlighting of B&W stills from film and especially magazines. For any Artist, they are an excellent source for study for lighting, composition, etc. And films can be all that and story telling techniques as well.Sadly, these are things in Art education that are under emphasized and under utilized. Videos like this are another great resource. And then there’s the use of color. I think I found another L in the panel you dissected. It’s color. Notice the lighter colors in the background for depth. But it’s the darker, more dense colors in the foreground that encompasses the rubble, the girl and the doll, work together to make another L shape. The Colorist (Tatayana Wood, maybe?) was really on the ball that day! Can’t wait for part 4, or however many you need!

Hi JP! Thanks for watching! The L's are everywhere....now that I've seen them-they jump out at me. The lack of education is one of the many reasons why I'm doing this. It's amazing how many bad looking comics I see on the shelves these days.

Hi, I'm somebody who makes comics for fun and I couldn't think of a more perfect timing for this series to come out. I'm working on a short comic inspired by EC horror comics and I was stuck a bit on paneling after I made a quick layout of the story - the narration worked, but I didn't know how to make the panels more exiting. And after watching your videos I have a totally different picture in my mind's eye! It all became clear - light/ dark contrasts, open panels, dramatic effects and so on. I'm sure it'll become different in a process, but now I just have this "Wally Wood vision" in my head which is a tremendous inspiration. Thank you so much for such an amazing content!
@FizzFop1
@FizzFop1 3 года назад
My pleasure Cob Crawler!!! Glad this helps! By the way, if you look at the other EC artists/stories...a lot of them used these panels also. I forgot to mention that in the first three parts of this series...maybe I will mention that in the next one.

@@FizzFop1 Yeah, I think I'll go step by step - it's mean to have too much inspiration and to little time to draw:D I'm currently watching "The Golden Age of Horror Comics" by In Praise Of Shadows and reading EC reprints to get the whole picture and I'd love to get a closer look at other EC artists one at a time! And I can tell you if it helped as I'll progress on my paneling:)

These videos have been monumental in learning visual storytelling techniques. There are certain simple rules you learn in visual/sequential art (thirds, contrast, dynamics) and a lot of the ones here are new to me. I will be putting these to use in my practice & work. God bless Wally Wood & you for breaking down each of the 22 panels! Thanks for another great video!

Hey Draven! Thanks for watching! I'm in the process of organizing my collection...which is another name for saying I'm reading old comics I have picked up in a while. I came across early 80s Avengers drawn by George Perez. I found a couple of Ls' in there. Found a few other Woodsian panels. Hhhmmm...maybe I should mention that in the next video.
